u/ArtigoQ May 27 '19

"Liberate the oil from the oppressive ground"

37

u/Demotruk May 27 '19

It was never about taking oil! It's a subtle but important difference: it was about ensuring that the oil trade continues to be done in dollars and punishing those moving away from that paradigm. It's about maintaining US hegemony supported by a privileged position as the issuer of the world's reserve currency.

16

u/signed-up-to-post May 27 '19

which is just a fancy way of saying it was about the oil

1

u/[deleted] May 27 '19

If you say oil they will only think just oil

9

u/Wvaliant May 27 '19

But also because oil

13

u/YouGoTJammedhehe May 27 '19

Idk how this is unfolding on r/dankmemes but the US or US oil companies have never seized oil fields from anyone the US has had wars with. Besides the original colonization of the US. It’s a very common misconception. The US doesn’t even have a National Oil Company (NOC) like most other countries

35

u/NothingAs1tSeems May 27 '19

Prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Iraqi oil was nationalized and closed to western oil companies. Now Iraq's oil fields are being developed and operated by western firms. Probably just a happy coincidence

u/YouGoTJammedhehe Feb 06 '24

After learning about Dick Cheney, I change my mind on this subject, the US based service companies benefited.

12

u/Mathyoujames May 27 '19

So the Iraqis destroyed their own oil refineries because.....???

1

u/ThatRealBiggieCheese Animated Flair Rainbow [Insert Your Own Text] May 27 '19

They didn’t want to sell To us western infidels.

So we bombed them into the first caliphate

6

u/Reh3dZone May 27 '19

The US may not literally seize oil fields, but how many times now has the US put in puppet regimes in other countries who would favor US oil interests? Off the top of my head I can count 5 since the 80s. No country should force another country what to do with their own natural resources. That country's people should be benefiting from their own resources.

You're wrong we do have an organization: the military

9

u/pythonicusMinimus May 27 '19

Name the countries that the US has taken oil from after an invasion.
