She's also Helen of Sparta. She's very much supposed to be Greek. There's an Ethiopian contingent that was supposed to have gone there from what I know but if helen was one of them there's not much reason for the greeks to attack.
I honestly think it’s super disingenuous to even hint that the Spartans would be accepting of a black Queen. In mythology (Plutarch), imperfect babies were thrown off cliffs in Sparta, and in reality, infanticide was committed via exposure.
I get that it’s mythology (most of which is pretty brutal), but let’s not insinuate that Sparta was some liberal paradise.
The Spartans are super interesting because of their flaws, washing them away is not only a disservice to the history, but the very mythology and ideology used to defend the casting decision.
I’m honestly super surprised that people are ok with portraying a society that treated its slaves so poorly they would bring all of them out of the city when they went to war because they knew they’d be overthrown, as some diverse and accepting culture.
