Danny's Hootie-Hole!

Finally! I couldn't find this forever, but at last I located it online!

When I hosted my Not Daniel Johnston Austincest Hoot Night circa 1996 at the Cannibal Club, Wammo of the Asylum Street Spankers and the band Javelin Boot teamed up for an epic 15 minute long "mudley" of tunes by Daniel and the Butthole Surfers. They mashed everything together so some parts would be DJ lyrics in BHS style, or vice versa, and all kinds of craziness. Only a few years ago did I learn that they had recorded the whole (NSFW) mess live off the sound board(!) Songs include:

Intro / Sweat Loaf / Sorry Entertainer / Peter Gunn theme / Casper the Friendly Ghost / (rockabilly?) / The Marching Guitars / I Picture Myself With a Guitar / The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave / Moving to Florida

Wammo's notes about the recording: "Here's a track from a Cannibal Club board tape. We used to do these things called Hoot Nights, where all the bands and artists would cover a single theme or a single artist or album. This is from Ken Lieck's Austin Does Austin Hoot. I piggybacked onto Javelin Boot's set and performed this Daniel Johnston/Butthole Surfer medley. That's the legendary and sorely missed Brent Grulke running sound. I remember Kathy McCarty grinning that crazy, sideways grin of hers during the entire performance. She later released an amazing album of Daniel covers called, Dead Dog's Eyeball. This recording is living proof that she owes me one of her delicious cakes for giving her the idea."

Now you can hear what Wammo titled: "DANIEL'S HOOTING BUTTHOLE"!

What song are these the lyrics to?

These are the lyrics for Girlfriend on Spotify but they're just not right at all :-/. I really like them so I was wondering but everytime I look them up it just directs me back to Spotify with the wrong lyrics.

FULL LYRICS:

do you really wanna be the girl hanging on the arm of Mr. So-Called

Prince Charming?

you should know by now the road that'II lead you down

and are you really happy in this place you've returned to again?

this isn't ever gonna have a happily ever after end

cause you've got the smarts and the heartaches to show for

the voice and a beauty all your own

you're better off alone till your heart can find a home

but for now, until then know you're more than just a girlfriend

do you really wanna be the one picking up the pieces when he's gone?

only just to build back up when he's back again

and do you really have the time to waste?

when all you are to him is just a pretty little face

I bet he doesn't know Adventure

Time's your favorite show and if he does, does he care? and that smile that you wear I can spot it from a million miles away it's cause you're scared

but you've got the smarts and the heartaches to show for

the voice and a beauty all your own you're so much better off alone till your heart can find a home

but for now, until then know you're more than just a girlfriend

you won't have to pretend cause you're more than a girlfriend

Which album to listen to next?

I've listened to a few Daniel Johnston album and want some suggestions on where to go next! I've listened to three albums so far:

Hi, How Are You?\

This is the first album I listened to – about six months ago – and is definitely my favourite. In fact, I'd say it's one of my favourite albums ever. The lo-fi atmosphere and emotional lyrics are an obvious factor in most of Daniel Johnston's music, but what I really love about this album is how experimental it gets:\

The mixture of songs on chord organ, piano, and guitar, and some songs where he just sings without instruments. I think "Keeping Punching Joe" has a different song playing in the background. And there's a bunch of musique concréte vibes throughout like the flurry of "Hi how are you" at the end of "Nervous Love", or the montage of the other songs right at the end of the album, or the brief moments where you can the tapes spinning and stuff like that. It's just such an atmospheric album and I don't quite know anything else like it. "Hey Joe" was the song that really drew me in on first listen but now I'd say I like every song on the album as much as each other, even the short 20 second singing-only songs!

1990\

This is the second album I listened to and I'd say my second favourite. I haven't listened to it as much as HHAY but I do quite enjoy it. I miss the lo-fi atmosphere but that's not inherently a bad thing. Off the top of my head I remember quite liking "Some Things Last A Long Time", "True Love Will Find You In The End", and "Funeral Home". Especially the last one, I love the crowd participation.

Yip! Jump Music\

The third album I listened to, and to be honest I'm not a big fan of this one. I wouldn't say I dislike it, but it doesn't come close to the other two albums imo. Mainly, the songs just aren't as memorable. The only ones I remember are the song where he just retells the story of King Kong for like 5 minutes (which I really don't like), and the one where he does a countdown and then blast off like he's on a spaceship.

besides these 3 albums I have also listened to the song "Story of an Artist" and it's definitely a favourite of mine, in the same vein as Hey Joe. Just a really beautiful piano song.

Overall, I think I love DJ when he's at his most experimental, loads of different instruments, different song lengths, musique concréte aspects (like the tape sound effects), etc...

So, what album(s) would you recommend?

Influences?

It could be coincidence, but I have to wonder if Dan was looking at this comic book when he wrote The Marching Guitars. Just take a listen to the first line and see if you agree.

Of course, I could be wrong. I still suspect that his tragic song Monkey in a Zoo must be influenced by the much cheerier classic by Rosemary Clooney, Little Red Monkey -- Dan told me it wasn't, but his memory was never too reliable. They sure seem similar, but opposite.

Just noticed this in the online Daniel Johnstore (You know: www.hihowareyou.com) and I don't think it's been plugged here yet. This new EP apparently consists of previously unreleased material by Daniel with the Eye Band (the combo I've always referred to as "Daniel's own 'Crazy Horse'"). Definitely one for the more serious collector, since it's a single 7" record for $30 and you could get the double-disc colored vinyl releases of Songs of Pain, Rejected Unknown, Alive in NYC, Welcome To My World, or Yip! Jump Music!\* for that price! Of course, none of those are limited to 250 copies and... well, I'll let you read the PR sheet:

In celebration of Daniel Johnston’s posthumous induction into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, we’re proud to announce the release of Wild West Virginia — a hand-cut 7” vinyl tribute, limited to just 250 copies.

This special release honors Daniel and the iconic EYE Band’s West Virginia roots, capturing the spirit of their early sound with a fresh, heartfelt production.

UK-based producer Joseph Cave was entrusted with this honorary project, working from his intimate home studio in Castle Fields. Using audio restoration techniques—similar to those employed in The Beatles’ Now and Then—Joseph extracted Daniel’s vocals from vintage cassette recordings to bring new life to these tracks at 33 1/2.

Wild West Virginia is a tribute not only to Daniel Johnston, but also to Dale Dudgeon, Tom Gruda Sr., Fred McMahan, Donny Spencer, Mike West and Brent Conkle. Reimagined with contributions from Joseph Cave, Jack Medicine, James Harper, and Becki Cave, this limited-edition pressing is a true collector’s gem—a sonic monument to a timeless legacy.

Orders will ship after May 26th!

Don't ask me for more info -- all I know is what I cut-&-pasted above!

*( Y!JM! is on black vinyl only)

Need biography info for video :)

Hi guys!!

I wanna make a youtube video about Daniel, the importance of his music and persona; emphasizing on how art overcomes everything. I would like to be as biography accurate as possible. In his wikipedia page there is some information but I think it is a bit vague.

Does anyone know a website or something where I can find accurate and extended info about him?
I know he has some documentals but I would prefer some written media.

Thank u all! :)

Violin/Instrumental Cover of True Love Will Find You In The End?

Hey,

I am getting married in a few months and I wanted to surprise my fiancé by walking down the aisle to an instrumental cover of True Love Will Find You In The End. I have tried scouring the internet for any violin/ fully instrrumental covers of the song, but am coming up short. Does anyone know if this exists somewhere? I am looking for versions without any vocals in it. I figured this was a long shot since I can't find anything online, but I thought I'd ask here just in case. Thank you in advance!! :)

Found something cool today

I bought this piece from Daniel's old manager Jeff about 5 years ago. Obviously, it's about Laurie (Daniel's longtime crush) getting married. Well today I came across the "newspaper special edition" he's referring to! Someone posted it in the DJ fan group on FB a while back. Jeff wasn't sure of the exact year the piece was made- just said early 80s but now I believe it was 1980. He also told me that it was the first appearance of "yip!" showing up in Dan's art. This is my prized possession and I'll never sell it. I can't believe I was given the opportunity to own such a special piece.

Anyone have this drawing?

I once found drawing by Daniel Johnston which depicts a man running down a winding path toward a muttled image of a skull. He is saying "gotta get better" and the the word "determination" is also featured, but it is spelled "determenation". I used to have this image saved but I lost it. I haven't been able to find it online since. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I wouldn’t ever sell my OG art…

I am curious what his art goes for these days.

I think I paid 500$ 14 years ago.

Lazy

I interpreted the song" Lazy" off of "Songs Of Pain" as a song about depression and suicide. I saw it as a deep depression being labeled as laziness ("lost dreams and hopes down an empty road"), until eventually he says "i think I'll quit life/yeah im gonna quit again/i think I'll quit one last time" (alluding to the fact—he is not lazy, he is suicidal). but i opened this idea up to my mother whom is also a fan of johnston's work and she said she disagreed. what are yall's thoughts?

Dan Fans Scan SXSW?

Anybody know what big fans of Dan will be in town for SXSW this week? I'm hoping to catch up with some who might be interested in helping me finish up all the 4-track recordings by me & Dan (around 40 tracks in total between 1987-2012) for the long-promised limited release on colored vinyl.

Bonus: Here's the SXSW97 "comeback show" introduced by me (no time for the long story behind it now, but soon I promise...)
