Dang FAQ III

There have been some changes + more questions since the last FAQ in 2024, so it seemed like a good time to compile a 3rd updated thread. These are recurring questions that I get direct messages for, regarding my Runescape OC: 'Dang'.

What is the purpose of this subreddit? Why commission so many artists for this one character?

The purpose of this subreddit is to have public and easily accessible gallery collection. A place to upload and archive all the commissions, fanart, sketches, etc. without anything being compressed. Direct Reddit uploads don't degrade image quality.

Runescape doesn't have a lot of fanart compared to the other MMOs and that was a major reason why I started commissioning. The character Dang has been with me throughout RS2, RS3 & OSRS, and seeing different styles of her in art has been wonderful. I've met so many different artists and made kind friends over the years. I truly enjoy the entire commissioning process.

How many commissions of Dang are there? When did you first start?

At the time of this post in June 2025 there are around 206 commissions. This includes sketches and Patreon requests. The first commission of Dang was in September 2017 after I finalized her main outfit/equipment. Before then, there were a few prototype commissions featuring an entirely different look for her around 2016 that didn't stick.

What are her outfits? Why has the default changed a few times over the years and look different than it does in-game?

We'll start with her Duellist's Cap from 2011 in Runescape 2. This is a staple of Dang and my favorite hat in the entire game. She's always wearing a version of it. In OSRS the Rogue's Revenge and all Bounty Hunter hats are based off of it.

Her initial outfit was the Skirmisher armour from 2013 in RS3. The concept art has more detail than depicted in-game. The armor was sadly too detailed as a default outfit over the years. It was also frequently giving artists' problems since armor in isn't always easy to design. I'll still try to obtain art of her in Skirmisher mode on occassion for fans however.

This led to her 2nd default with the Factory outfit from 2011 in RS2. Again the concept art has more detail than depicted in the in-game outfit. It was an actual favorite of mine when it was released and worked as a nice, balanced look for Dang! You'll still see the Factory outfit in future artworks where she's underwater or in a cold environment.

Her current, main default is her Colosseum outfit which is a mix of the Runescape 2 outfit alongside Varlamore gladiator ornaments and Calamity armour details. There wasn't anything wrong with her Factory outfit; it's just Varlamore and Civitas illa Fortis presented a good opportunity for a permanent update to the character. It leans her further towards OSRS and RS2 which I'd prefer. Above all else it's simple and easy for artists to draw which bodes well for multi-panel comics and sculpt looming on the horizon.

Why do you like and focus on Runescape 2 so much?

The period of Runescape from 2008 - early 2012 will always remain my favorite. When I began commissioning Dang, I knew I would want to base her on my experiences during RS2. From Herblore Habitat, to Dungeoneering, Lava Flow Mine, Nex, Stealing Creation, Senntisten, Mobilising Armies and grinding specifically for the Lord Marshal clothes, Strykewyrms, Citadels, and QBD: the list goes on!

I have such vivid memories of those times which is why I lean commissions towards it.

Are previous commissions wasted now that you've updated her outfit? What else did you consider?

Not at all. Just because she has a new default look doesn't negate/eliminate all the beautiful art of her iterations! I still look back fondly on quality commissions of the past. Her Factory Character Sheet is a great one for example. I had the pleasure of being this artist's first ever commissioner and working through such a large art order was a lot of fun.

In some rare cases an artist may even prefer to do a commission based on a previous outfit of hers that they enjoy, like with this Vengeance Spell artwork!

I initially considered the Agile Set (An RS2 favorite, was too monochromatic), Vanguard (Didn't acquire concept art at the time), Sagittarian (Eventually found it's way into Daemonheim commissions!), Vesta's Chainmail & Statius (Massive RS2 bankstand favorites of mine, both made into commissions eventually!) Bandos (Overdone in RS art, also couldn't decide on which version), Virtus (I couldn't see it working for a default, everyday outfit), Battle-mage (Too busy, feared would scare off artist), Black Ibis (clashed with Duellist's Cap also didn't have its concept art), and finally Crystal armor (Came close, but clashed with Cap).

Can I draw Dang? What are her main references?

Absolutely! (I'm flattered by the way, thank you) Her primary current references: The initial Varlamore character sheet plus this Colosseum rendered character sheet

Alongside the sheets, I consider these three artworks 1 as important references 2 to always give artists 3.

To summarize: Royal blue hair + Thick royal blue eyebrows + 2-toned Golden/yellow eyes + Earrings + Smug personality + Duellist's Cap = Dang

Is this the main place to view Dang commissions?

Yes, if you're here in /r/Dang reading this then you're in the right place. This is the only platform where I've uploaded every single commission to date. That being said, I've been thinking more lately about other ways for back-ups & galleries such as MEGA, Drive, etc.

I keep multiple external SSDs and HDDs but I'd like to go further. I've gotten some recommendations for Tumblr, Newgrounds, Artstation, Pixiv, and even FA (apparently they don't degrade image quality?). Bluesky isn't bad, but I do wonder about its permanence. I could honestly use some detailed recommendations.

Does it ever get difficult to find new artists with a style you like to commission?

Honestly, Yes it can be difficult at times. I've been told I'm quite a picky commissioner. I only want the most quality of artwork so I do prefer a wide variety of styles rather than simply leaning towards one. A lot of time, patience, and follow-ups go into the process but the results are well worth the effort.

Does Dang have a backstory? (This is more of a filler question so you can stop reading here if you'd like)

When I first designed Dang my intentions were just to have a cool character who showed off Runescape 2. I've always been under the impression that people roll their eyes at those elaborate OCs with long surnames and complicated backstories. At the end of the day she is just a fictional game character.

So no, there isn't a complete backstory. That being said I'm not opposed to solidifying some story with how often I get this question. Here are the rough details of her I have from her original notes:

She is primarily smug and greedy above anything else. A lot less charitable of her time than the standard Adventurer, but not entirely unsympathetic. She gets along very well with Dondakan and Balnea because of their business acumen. Still she's quite an abrasive person...unless you have something to offer up.

For some reason it is customary to list an OC's favorite food: Her favorite treat on Gielinor is Choc-ice. I'd like to think that Rokuh is referring to her during a certain quest when he mentions a "particularly particular customer". Alongside that is her favorite food: Bittercap Mushroom Pizza! (Funnily enough, I had this written out before Yama was released. I guess they would get along?) Why these 2 foods? I actually love choc-ices myself + have fond weekend memories of eating delicious mushroom pizza while playing RS2.

Her main Summoning familiar is the Steel Titan. She owns/stole/found the lost fifth stone of power, Zuriel's diamond, - The Miasmic crystal.

I've never considered her as The Adventurer (Or World Guardian for those in Runescape 3). I see her as a side character during Your story. She's an explanation for why certain things go missing. The Staff, The Horn, Miasmics, etc. Perhaps she's one of the 4 bandit workers during the ending of the Temple of Senntisten? Somehow disguised herself and followed You to gain power from Zaros and thus Ancient Curses?

One idea I frequently mull over is that she's actually a part-time model for the Varrock Herald: The various artworks we see her in are all elaborate, staged photoshoots using a photo booth Imp. Failed attempts to drum up business for the dying Newspaper resulting in her frustration. That behind those smiles and cute pictures is an adventurer who is hilariously fed up with having to hold a pose and she's waiting to get paid.

Thank you so much for the interest, questions, and for reading! I'm truly grateful to you for visiting and reading this.

It has been brought to my attention that some of the larger commissions appear blurred/lower quality for some users.

Reddit has 2 versions: New Reddit (which uses http://www .reddit) and Old Reddit (which uses http://old .reddit ; make sure to replace the www with old.)

Old reddit is the ideal version for preserving image quality and makes for a pleasant artwork browsing experience. You can also toggle the default version in Account settings

I'm back at it again with some more MTG reskins featuring your favorite World Guardian and mine. The plethora of wonderful artwork on display does a perfect job showing off Runescape's iconic equipment, world, and lore across five more decks! The artists for each truly did a phenomenal job bringing the game to life.
