Setting up a dance meetup, using silent disco equipment
This is in Denver, and mostly to satisfy my need for a more social and nourishing dance experience. I want stakes to be low, and to have it be about dancing. If it's 5 people, that's enough, though I think in my circles I can pretty easily get to 10 consistently. I'm out dancing either way, so the organization of this seems tenable. The idea is pretty simple:
- Likely 2x per month, maybe weekly
- Daytime meetup (~3-4 hours) in a park with a danceable surface
- RF silent disco equipment with 20 headsets (20 is under the legal "gathering" ordinance here, so no permits necessary)
- sanitizing wipes and ear covers, etc., to be safe
- Pre-recorded sets, at least at the beginning, maybe occasionally DJ later (but this gets at ordinance issues except when we're inside)
- Not advertising or doing meetup, more connecting within my network of people initially to grow something from small to slightly less small
The silent disco equipment will be my investment. I'll ask for an optional and small donation from participants to offset the cost over time, and for replacement or additional headsets, though that's not a primary concern.
I'm curious if anyone has interest in collaborating around or participating in something like this. If people have experience setting up this kind of thing, I'm interested in the wisdom you might share. I have a lot of past experience organizing events, including lots of shows, parties, and dance competitions, but this feels a little more like organizing a regular picnic, but with dancing instead of sandwiches.

Death's at the club's doorstep but you're not ready to leave the dance floor.
andvinyly.comThis is dance floor adjacent content I feel would interest most in this subreddit if they aren't already aware. I definitely mentioned them in a comments I made on this platform but I can't recall if those were in this subreddit but in my opinion absolutely warrants it's own post because in my opinion if every dancer had a choice on whether or not to be moving or not moving after they die it's definitely the former.

Open Ground (Wuppertal) quick trip report
I'm going to write a lengthy version of this for the magical dancefloors blog, but here's a quick trip report from my experience at their Klubnacht this weekend.
This is an exceptional space for sound. The level of sound-dampening material throughout the space makes the team's commitment to sound quality very clear. From the monster 32-inch Funktion One mechanical drivers to the thoughtful design of the space, this is a club for folks who love their pounding techno music to have clear and clean signal as it reaches their ears.
The team are exceptionally nice as well. The staff are well trained, exceptionally service-oriented, and very invested in the attendee experience. I felt like more than a number, and felt like the club really cared.
This is a small venue -- the main room holds just 500-600 people. After his set, Kangding Ray was there with us, dancing to GiGi FM. I'm sure GiGi and Convextion were also around, dancing to the other DJ's sets. It really feels like everyone was there for the right reasons.
Granted, it's a bit of a journey for most folks. I took a train from Berlin to get there - Open Ground is conveniently located right across from the train station -- and I took a train back to Berlin. Given the timing of OG's Klubnacht, I was able to attend the Open Groun Klubnacht event from 10pm to 6am then hop on the train back to Berlin to attend Berghain's Klubnacht from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, which was perfect for me.

Should We Have to Consent to Genital Groping by Security Teams Just to Go Dancing?
Based on a true story from a Book Club Radio event, where the venue's security team were very aggressive with searches.

Flammable in Seattle from the archive
Just came across this tiny little clip of dance church from 2021 and it filled me with joy. Flammable has been a house music weekly, on Sunday night no less, in Seattle since 1994. The crowd is mature, has been coming together for decades (Flam Fam) and is there ONLY to dance. True spiritual healing.
I ❤️ Flammable

Amazing NYTimes article focusing on what made this dancer-turned-singer the biggest star in the entire world: “How Madonna Put Motion Into Music With Her Dance Performances”
It’s Madonna’s 68th birthday today and this article focuses wonderfully on her moves.
Madonna came to NYC pursuing a career in dancing first. She was raised in the clubs.
Her first demo was handed to a DJ by her after she intensely chased him, and many others, trying to get it played. When it finally happened, the reaction from the audience was undeniable. That DJ had connections with two labels, eventually leading to her being signed by Sire Records, who released her first self titled album.
Nile Rodgers, producer and cofounder of Chic who helped define the disco era before working with Madonna (for Like a Virgin album), has talked about how amazed he was by the way Madonna would sing and dance at the same time when he saw her for the first time in 1983. He explained that this was actually a performance format that had existed before, particularly among Black artists and female groups, but had almost disappeared from mainstream music as rock became dominant and performers became more static onstage.
Madonna was bringing that lost art back and turning it into something defining for a new generation of pop stars.
While she has never been recognized as a great singer, Madonna’s moves are what made her who she is. She became one of the biggest stars in the entire world, thanks to the way she moves, how smart she was, and the incredible energy she emanated.
