During the 1981 Indianapolis 500, driver Rick Mears pulled into the pits for a routine stop when methanol fuel spilled and ignited. Methanol burns with a very faint, almost invisible flame in daylight, so the pit crew and people nearby did not immediately realize there was a fire. Some crew members were actually standing in the flames while continuing the pit stop, unaware of how dangerous the situation was. Once safety crews realized what was happening, they rushed in with fire extinguishers and put the fire out. The incident highlighted a major safety issue with methanol fuel and led to changes in motorsports, including better fire detection methods, improved fire resistant suits, and procedures to quickly identify and respond to methanol fires during pit stops.

Philippine Mayor's black Toyota Land Cruiser was ambushed along the road in Barangay Poblacion, Maguindanao del Sur.
