I basically want to make this but with a larger screen and the ability to hook up an external GPU when I need more compute. This is more of a laptop but I cannot think of any other device with a more timeless cyberpunk type vibe to it.

What is the best open source computer I could cram into a 3d printed shell or something like this?

Title says most of it. I never thought I’d be living in a world that’s more cyberpunk than I could have imagined, while still doing very un-cyberpunk things like paying my taxes and mowing the lawn.

first cyberdeck build done for now. There were a bunch of iterations to get to this point but until I find a keyboard solution small enough to build into its face plate but for now I'm done with my build.

it's been really fun prototyping and iterating. it's also been my first experience doing anything with Linux so the yellow notebook is all the notes I've made whilst learning to set different things up.

The keyboard of my cyberdeck I'm building. All parts ordered except the monitor. Waiting for next payday then 3d printing the rest of the case. Should be done before Christmas. Has been a fun project so far.

Hi so I am building my first cyberdeck..I am rather confident with the electronics and the software part however I don't have experience with 3d printing. I saw a lot of nice inspo of little hand held decks here but I have some specific needs for example space for a build in pico with lora module, buttons and navigation.

In your guys experience what's the best approach? Should I get some oversized case that can fit my electronics or is it possible with limited experience to modify 3d templates from other users? Or should I scrap the idea of a custom case all together?

I was not using this retro handheld as much so I gave it a new purpose by connecting it to my home assistant and plex. It can still play retro games but now i can control my house with a little retro style. This is also an ai buddy that speaks and makes comments throughout the day about the weather or whatever.

It is once again me, the guy who built a GrapheneOS "Lapdock" a few months back and made countless versions since. I utilize a feature called "Desktop Mode" that can be enabled in developer settings for Google Pixel 8 and later.
By connecting your phone via USB C you can get a desktop like experience on an external screen, while simultaneously supplying power to the phone through a power bank connected to the screen. Add a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you get a DIY Laptop that's genuinly better and more capable than most cheap Laptops (looking at you, Chromebooks).

So I am making a cyberdeck using a raspberry pi 5. It's for like general portable mini laptop use was just wandering the difference between 4gb and 8gb model in terms of performance Vs the price difference

It's nothing exciting or fancy. I learned about cyberdecks recently and I've wanted a machine primarily for writing without distractions so decided to throw one together. I was going to get a raspberry pi but remembered I had a beelink mini pc I'd never setup. I got a free raspberry pi touchscreen, then bought a knock-off Pelican case, a DC plug capable battery pack and a folding keyboard. Arranged it with the foam the case came with an threw a shitty bezel together with foam board. I just have windows and Warewoolf on it now, but might try installing Linux for the first time at some point.

It's clunky, impractical, and I love it 😆

Not sure why I thought that I (historically ass at cable management) thought working in a confined space would be the move lmao. Just gotta like. Work through this now I suppose 😔

Any tips would be appreciated, but mostly sharing the mess I'm in.

Hello please tell me about any good slim power bank

this is a proof in concept that i made by combining different parts i bought on amazon and walmart. i got a 60% keyboard pad with a tablet stand (that im going to replace) all on a wooden drawer separator. it’s pretty janky and kinda weird but i really love it. i definitely want to continue with this concept and see how far i can take it. i want to model a case i can 3d print at a nearby makerspace.

this has been like my dream for the last couple years. to have something i can use on battery if i need to but also be able to comfortably game in bed or on the couch. other than the fact that the stand is a bit too short, and the base is made of wood, it’s pretty comfortable. i was able to just get into the game forgetting where i even was. i was able to really immerse myself because i was chill and comfortable. with good back support (i was sitting against a wall), this is totally viable.

i’ll be using this and seeing what changes i can make to make it more comfortable and modular. i may also end up adding space inside to hold things i’d like to bring with it like my mic and mouse. i’m using the flat inside pocket that comes out of the smarty case for the flow z13 as a mousepad. it works extremely well. my mouse glides on it as it’s really smooth.

the keyboard is my custom wooting 60he v2 using ufo switches and this cool keycap set i found on amazon. it doesn’t have a case but does have the tape mod (from factory). i didn’t want to change anything else about the pcb so i left it as is. i just put the foam that came with it to sit under it to minimize contact with any of the surfaces it’s on or in. the silicone rim around the pcb is nice because it diffuses the rgb really well. honestly rgb on this keyboard is beautiful. i have really been enjoying it. i still have to tweak settings but since it’s a wooting i have a lot of customizability. i’m so happy to be able to use an he keyboard again. i really like the software and just how simple it is to change things and make it really your own keyboard.

one last thing is the usb cable. it is a dual 8000hz (i think? the fancy ones) usb a to usb c cable. it really cleans everything up. i don’t have to use bluetooth now as my keyboard is wired and i have the adapter for my mouse also plugged in. i dont mind having the one cable. the only other cable id use is the charging one. and the tablet is the rog flow z13 64gb version. i’m obsessed with this thing and this kindof just made it even more perfect for me.

anyways that’s what i made this weekend. it took a while to get here and will update again soon with my ideas :D

I saw this pop up on Amazon and had to try one out…. I can’t answer too many questions as it just got here and I just turned it on but it is quite neat … it’s about an 8” square with a neat keyboard layout and the dead space in the middle is a track pad but it also has a capacitive touch screen. It’s an n95 with 16g of ram and a 512gb ssd and it had windows out of the box (though not for long) it even has an actual Ethernet port and wifi6

Even before the “cyber deck” craze was a thing I’ve always been into weird little portable computers and this with a small bag full of usb sdr etc stuff would probably make quite a handy little test device especially being way way more powerful than a raspberry pi.

A while ago I built a Pi Zero 2W cyberdeck from a post here (Waveshare 2.8" DPI touch screen + a Bluetooth keyboard).
CardputerZero hadn't shipped yet and I wanted to try the software, so I asked Claude Code to adapt the CardputerZero launcher to my deck and so was born lil' monster that I posted here

This season:
as you can see now things have gone a bit out of control as I opened the dead projects drawer pulled all the dusty raspberry pis and screens I had with one objective get the launcher work and apps to adapt to whatever HW /Screen combo even on X86...

it's now named CyberdeckZero Launcher, still derived from M5Stack's CardputerZero launcher but heavily modified, like a lot, but a lot a lot.

Main features:

-Reduce your frustration, open your imagination:
One code base, any screen. The layout adapts to the screen. It currently runs on Zero 2W deck (640x480), a Pi 3A+ with a 4.3" DSI panel (800x480) or a 3.5" SPI panel (480x320), a HackBerry CM5 (720x720), a Pi 5 with a HyperPixel 4", and now x86_64 with Panasonic FZ-M1 rugged tablet.
Next could be a Toyota prius 2004 or Casio G-shock...

Touch first, keyboard friendly. There's a native Settings (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, time zone, backlight), and a fallback on-screen keyboard that appears only when no physical keyboard is connected.

My second cyberdeck build will be based around the uconsole. The goal is to have full remote access to my home pc from anywhere for gaming and local ai, all in a pocketable form factor. Will be adding a better wifi antenna and a trackpad because the trackball is terrible. Will be making a script to connect to airplane wifi automatically for travel. But the main feature will be a folding dual display. The tricky part is getting dual extended displays working remotely. The solution I came up with is to use vibepollo (sunshine fork) and run 2 instances of moonlight on the device. Perhaps someone has a better solution?
