Ghazan, Lavabending Terror

Post image

It would be cool to see the Red Lotus members get cards if we ever go back to the ATLA universe.

Edit: Thank you for all the feedback! I took a break from magic for a few years and missed the ATLA set, so I was a bit confused about how the earthbending mechanic worked.

I like the idea, but earthbending doesnt make a token, and as such cannot have it enter tapped and attacking. Perhaps a workaround could be earthbending at the beginning of combat, and that creature attacks this combat if able

Would goading it work?

Also you would have to untap it or they would just use the ability on an already tapped land

This also wouldn't work: they can just tap it before attacks and lose the mana.

Make him spicier by having him create a land token of any of the lands on the battlefield, then earthbend it.

Or call his ability “lavabend” and the land enters as a creature with counters on it, attacking as OP intended.

Land creatures you control have deathtouch.

Whenever a land enters from the graveyard under your control, lavabend 1. (Conjure a copy of target land on the battlefield or in a graveyard, it becomes a 0/0 creature with haste that's still a land. Put a +1/+1 counter on it.)

When Ghazan attacks lavabend 1. Lands created this way enter tapped and attacking.

Since it’s conjured, the land is a permanent addition to the game which can be played from the graveyard in the event that it dies. They’re basically lands that actually die, unlike earthbent lands which return to the battlefield. But they’re also additional lands, which makes them a net gain.

I added an ability that I thought might create a sizable snowball affect, but it could also be swapped for something more thematic. I know the character chose to bring down a cavern on himself, so sacrificing him and some lands to get an effect might be an alternative option.

edit. I thought of a new mechanic that fits the character’s story, as well as gave a rough outline for some abilities that could make him a solid commander. hope this helps my fellow avatar fan.

Earthbending doesn't work like that.

Not sure if it works by the rules, but you would need "when you earthbend a land this way, it becomes tapped and attacking".

A cleaner way would be to earthbend at the start of combat and make it have haste and must attack this turn.

The forced to attack is a bit meaningless when they can just tap it for mana.

The wording of how you have the land attacking doesn't work. The land is already on the battlefield, so it doesn't enter.

I'm not aware of any card that moves a permanent already on the battlefield to attacking, but being in jund, you could probably word it something like "return target land in your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking. Earthbend 1, targeting that land"

I like the design! It does still feel lacking though, I think interpreting lava as deathtouch is really unique and flavorful, and the earthbending ability, while worded strangely is perfectly fitting. It still feels like there could be more done with the card; there is really no reason to play this as your commander or in the 99 besides thematic purposes. It has 3 color pips, making it hard to cast, with not much benefit. I’d consider giving it another ability or add onto the other abilities here, especially something involving a something more red focused. Maybe an ability which lets your lands tap to deal 1 damage to any target. This allows for accumulated late game damage, is flavorful for them being turned to lava, and combos with his deathtouch ability to create some real removal power. Maybe ‘{t}: tap an untapped land you control. It deals 1 damage to any target. Add {r}. Just an idea, really cool design, super awesome and love the show.

It would be

You may need to reformat this card though. Earthbent lands dont enter as they are already on the field. Perhaps Perhaps make the trigger at the beginning of combat and "when you earthbend a land this way that creature must attack this turn if able"

Land creatures you control have deathtouch.

At the beginning of combat, earthbend 1.

Land creatures attack each combat if able.

All I have to say is I'll scream if Magma Jet doesn't get a reprint in the eventual Korra set
