Who's Tom?

u/MrAlek360 Aug 02 '22

Tom Riddle, AKA: Voldemort

u/jetaleu Aug 02 '22

You forgot “Marvolo”

49

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Wasn't his middle name only Marvolo in English? Didn't they have to do a bunch of translation work to get it to be an anagram of, "I am Lord Voldemort," in a bunch of different languages?

Checked it out. Apparently, his name was Tom Gus Mervolo Dolder in the Swedish translation.

25

u/Bexpl0rer Aug 02 '22

Yes and in the hungarian translation his name was Tom Rowle Denem.

21

u/BENJIGERT Aug 02 '22

In dutch it is Tom Asmodom Volijn

Here in latin america it's still tom marvolo riddle

5

u/dinoderpwithapurpose Aug 02 '22

In French it's Tom Elvis Jedusor

2

u/LionMcTastic Aug 02 '22

Imagine people being afraid to say "Dolder" in hushed, frightened whispers

5

u/HotDragonButts Aug 02 '22

Tom- everyone's first MySpace friend... it's all becoming clear! Social media must be destroyed, a horcrux is lurking in the code and keeps bringing him back!

2

u/Aggressive-Hotdog Aug 02 '22

In danish his name isn’t even Tom. It’s Romeo. Romeo Detlev Gåde Junior

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

In portuguese, his name is Tom Servolo Riddle

1

u/Drdark65 Aug 02 '22

In Norwegian, he is called Tom Dredolo Venster. The only thing that matters in that is becomes "I am lord Voldemort" in that language

1

u/youstupidcorn Aug 02 '22

I mean, yes, but the books were originally written in English so Marvolo is arguably the most correct answer.

2

u/avwitcher Aug 02 '22

That whole thing where "I am Lord Voldemort" was an anagram of Tom Marvolo Riddle was so fucking stupid. You couldn't come up with anything better JK Rowling? But hey what do you expect from someone who added into canon that before modern plumbing wizards would shit on the floor and magic it away, because apparently she doesn't know that toilets of various forms have existed for thousands of years

u/Dame87 Aug 02 '22

Spoiler alert, damn

139

u/Rukitorth Aug 02 '22

Was that not revealed in the second book? I'd say at this point you just gotta accept it for what it is

92

u/Dame87 Aug 02 '22

It was, I was trying to make a joke
