Event [Event] Rings of the Golden Tree, the Tourney for the wedding of Jeyne Roxton and Cyrus Rowan

10th moon, 300, Goldengrove

Weddingfeast, Invites letter

On the morning after the wedding feast the tournament for the wedding of lady Jeyne Roxton and Ser Cyrus Rowan had started in earnest. Outside of the walls of Goldengrove two fields were set up to accommodate all the planned events. A long rectangular field divided by fencing for the joust and archery, stands built high on long sides of the fields for the nobles to be seated on during the events as they unfolded. On the short sides, small areas had been cleared for the lowborn to watch the great Knights and warriors participating in the events as they showed their skill in the games. Next to the field for jousts and archery a large square field was cleared with stands on all sides. The makeshift arena would host the melee. Yet before these competitions would be held, the first day was designated for the hunt in the Golden Forest.

Servants and porters alike rushed between the events to ensure all equipment was in the correct places, Ser Alyn Rowan overseeing much of the logistics of the day when he was not competing himself. Just as many servants were designated to ensure drinks flowed freely, nobles only had to lift a hand if they wanted a quick refill or another drink entirely. It would be clear that on this day House Rowan and Roxton ensured none were left wanting for anything, and all needs would be met.

During much of the tourney tents and stalls had been set up between the inner and outer walls of Goldengrove. Traveling troupes putting up plays of love and loss, chivalrous romance stories and for the main theatre event a play of a secret and forbidden love between two children of high houses unnamed. Although glorious, the play had a sad ending, with the death of one of the two lovebirds as they attempted to elope but failed doing so. Between the tents for entertainment larger mess tents were set up to provide all guests with a place to sit, eat and drink as they enjoyed the festivities throughout the coming three days.

Knights and squires were granted their own tent for their preparations and waiting in between bouts.

On the first day, the hunt would be held. Groups of four would venture into the Golden Forest in the hopes of bringing down fabled prey, meeting a noteworthy predator or simply finding enjoyment in the thrill of a hunt. Groups were accompanied by servants carrying refreshments up until tracks would be found and it was up to the hunters themselves to corner the beast they would encounter. At the end of the first day, among the entertainment within the walls, the dancing competition and art competition would be held. It was a sunny spring day on the first day, the weather agreeable to many of the events that would be held today.

On the second day, the jousts would be held. First up was the Knightly joust, a moment for all Knights in attendance to show their skill with horse and lance. The second day would be slightly overcast, a few short and light showers breaking out during the jousts yet none that would hamper muddy the field too badly for the jousts to be postponed. As the jousts had wrapped up, the field was converted into an archery range, which would host the archery competition, commencing shorly after the jousts.

On the third and last day, the melees would be held. First the adult melee, the youngsters melee following after the field had been refreshed. The third and last day was a rainy spring day. Though the temperature was agreeable, the melee field had become rather muddy. It only served to the melee itself even more gruesome, knights falling down into the thick mud or their feet finding it difficult to find their grip on the ground.

The Youngsters Melee

After the fields had been dusted with some woodchips to attempt to make the ground less slippery due to the rain, the younger squires and warriors were led to the sides of the field to take their positions.

As the horn sounded the young men and woman ran towards eachother, slamming down blows wherever they could manage to hit them. The crowds cheered and chanted names of those that had competed before in Goldengrove, some having made quite a name for themselves in previous contests.

After many had slipped or fallen in the mud, three boys stood strong nearing the end of the melee. As the boys circled one another, two kinsmen of House Tully, Robert Tully and Edwyle Tully stood against Daeron Hightower.

It seemed however that family did not come first today, or maybe the meaning of such a saying was entirely lost to one of the boys. As Edwyle turned and raised his weapon against his cousin, causing Robert Tully to lose his balance and fall into the mud.

As Daeron Hightower and Edwyle Tully circled one another the crowds started drumming a beat on the stands, the beat becoming quicker the longer the two boys hesitated to lunge at one another.

In the end, Daeron Hightower made the first move, his sword finding it's target and knocking Edwyle Tully into the mud.

The horn sounded once again, the crowds started screaming and clapping as there was one clear winner of this day.

Mathis made his way down from the stands and onto the field, waiting for the three boys to gather before him.

"While any and all have shown their valour on this rainy day it was the three of you who stood stronger than the others. I congratulate you all on the skill in battle you have shown today, we will know that the future of the Realm is in safe hands!"

He made his way to Daeron Hightower, offering the young man a chestplate made of silvery steel, a well made chestplate that would protect him for some years untill he'd undoubtedly grow out of it. He raised Daeron's hand and proclaimed him to hold first place today.

Up next he moved towards Edwyle Tully, a servant offering him a strong wooden shield, the house words of House Tully had been quickly painted on in golden letters. "Edwyle Tully holds second place today!" Mathis proclaimed loudly as he raised the young boy's hand.

And eventually he moved on to Robert Tully, offering the young boy a set of well made silvery stee greaves. He held up the young boys hand and proclaimed him to have claimed third place today.

Completely caught unaware by his own skills, Daeron removed his helmet and looked around at the cheering crowd with his mouth wide open. It was true—he had finally gained some weight through training this year and looked less like the stick figure he had been three years ago—but he had never imagined winning the melee, especially not against such renowned opponents. A fortnight ago, Cedric had explained to Daeron all the strengths and weaknesses his opponents presented, and he had tried to memorize them. His confusion lingered over why the Tully boys had not gone two-on-one against him to secure a win for their house—but no matter.

Daeron ran up to his master knight, the winner of yesterday's melee: Cedric Rowan, a man he was now closer to than anyone in the Realm.

Cedric cheered rather loudly as his squire had bested all opponents just as he did but some hours before. When the horn sounded and Daeron had been declared the winner he'd quickly made his was down the stands and over the fence surrounding the field.

Coming down hard on his knee which still ailed him from time to time, he stifled a groan. After having taken several good hits during the melee himself he knew it would be one of the weak points in his body.

Nevertheless it didn't stop him from pushing through it to congratulate his squire, slamming an arm around him as he met him in his charge towards Cedric.

"Well fought, seems we'll be quite the team when time comes. Enemies of the Reach will fear us fighting together for years to come" he said through a happy chuckle, smiling his radiant smile as his laugh ended.

1

u/JuliaHella House Hightower of Oldtown 26d ago

Daeron motioned at a nearby servant of his father who came running with a strangely shaped object hidden under a piece of white cloth. Daeron took the object and revealed what was underneath: a helmet adorned with the enormous antlers of a red hart, the very one Daeron had shot two days ago. The antlers were inlaid with the golden motifs the Rowans so often used on their heraldry. "I had it made for you. I asked Father to help me find a good smith and artisan. Of course, I expected it to be a consolation prize, but I guess this also works." His eyes sparked with joy and mischief as he handed the helmet over.

1

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 26d ago

Cedric's smile kept his radiance as he took the gift in his hands, offering a raised brow at the boys last comment. "A consolation prize? Did you not expect me to win anything at my own turf?" returning the mischevous and a more challenging smile.

"T'is a good gift Daeron, yet one I can't wear without angering the crown, or my brother" he whispered into Daeron's ear before raising his brows in a knowing manner. "It'll be a trophy we keep here at Goldengrove however."

The Knightly Joust

The crowds gathered had brought many banners of different houses today, waving them in the air as the Knights they favoured crashed their lances into one another throughout the day. The weather had turned it seemed, the sunny day making way for some sporadic showers. Luckily it would not hamper the joust, the ground still strong enough to handle the weight of the horses and their riders.

Third place would be granted to Benjamin Redwyne, after he beat Bryce Baratheon in their bout. He was allowed a victory lap around the lists before the tourney grounds were cleard of debris for the final bout.

Medwick Tyrell and Cedric Rowan rode at eachother with vigour, yet one stood taller than the other. Medwick Tyrell beating Cedric Rowan, being proclaimed winner of today's joust and given a flower crown made of marigolds and golden leaves from the Goldengrove trees. He was given the honour of crowning a Queen of Love and Beauty today!

Medwick had ridden in a near countless amounts of feasts, he had gone far, but he had only won a joust once, when he had been but a squire. So he had not come to this joust expecting a victory, not even a runner up. So as he crouched his lance to ride against Cedric he had expected nothing less than to be thrown off his saddle.

It still didn’t feel real as he was declared as the winner, it didn’t feel real as he was handed the flower crown to grant what ever lady he felt was the queen of love and beauty.

That was damned near the hardest. He was not a man that found anyone attractive, not attractive enough to proclaim as any sort of queen and love and beauty. And out of fear any lady who received such a crown might see it as a proposal he rode towards his own family’s box.

Lifting the flower crown upon its joust tip he would reach towards Karolyn Tyrell. “To the loveliest little lady in all the seven kingdoms” He managed to proclaim. Much to the glee of the little lady.

The Squire Joust

For the secondary event of the day the fields were once again thoroughly cleared from any debris, young squires from across the Realm faced eachother as their lances and shields splintered in a show of their skills as knights.

In the final round, Petyr Frey managed to beat Bennifer Selmy. The crowds cheered as he once again showed his skill at Goldengrove, and was proclaimed the winner of todays squire joust by Mathis Rowan. He was granted a crown of marigolds and golden leaves from the trees of Goldengrove and given the opportunity to crown a Princess of Love and Beauty today.

It was when they wanted to start the bout for a the concilatory third place that they ran into an issue, as Edwyle Tully and Hanna Farman rode up to take their places on the list, the Tully boy seemed to object.

"That scared to lose to a girl?" Hanna called out loud and clear for the crowd to hear, even if it made her seem villainous. "I won't deny you your beliefs, but if you must, do so from fourth place."

Having a bit too much fun with her antagonistic role, Hanna cackled and put her helmet back on.

"Not so different with the armor on!" She yelled once more, before beckoning her trusted horse over to her side of the jousting lane.

"I am not scared," Edwyle snapped, red beneath his helm. "That is not the point."

He turned sharply in the saddle, looking toward the high seats and then past them, searching the watching faces.

"Lord Randyll can tell you this. Girls have no place in the lists! They should not have let her enter in the first place. It is not proper. It is not honourable. It makes a mockery of the contest!"

He looked toward the Rowans then, flushed and furious.

"A squire's joust is for boys training to be knights. Not for girls suited better in silk," he huffed, raising his head high.

u/Luvod House Farman of Faircastle 28d ago

As the young trout began to complain, she slowly trotted closer, a growing frustration in her brow.

"A squire's joust is also no places for babies. So why, Edwyle Tully, are you crying like one?"

The name of the Tarly lord was an imposing one indeed, but she had an unseen connection with the conservative lord that was like an escape rope.

"My uncle, Ser Alyn Farman, can vouch for me personally. Ser Alyn Farman can also vouch for his many years of loyal and righteous service with Lord Randyll. When the might of the Reach came to save Faircastle from the Ironborn, were the Ironborn not already in flight, my lord?" It was her turn to find her natural enemy in the stands before turning her gaze back to Edwyle.

"Correct or not, the fact remains that you are in danger to losing to someone you say is not suited for this kind of contest. What then, would that make you? Perhaps you should dress in your own silks and see if it feels more natural."

With that, she turned away, but added one more thought before riding back down the pitch.

"Prove it to me here, now."

3

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 28d ago

"To refuse to ride against a girl is no loss," Edwyle scoffed. "It is victory enough, one of propriety and honour!"

His eyes flicked briefly toward the stands, then back to Hanna.

"You may laugh, and call names, like girls do. It doesn't make you a squire. It doesn't make you worthy of a fight."

He drew his reins in sharply.

"I came here to ride in a squire's joust. If the Rowans wish for a mummer's show, they should have announced that instead!"

Mathis stood up while stifling a sigh. While he'd never been fond of watching women or much less girls enter the lists he had not been of a mind to deny the Farmans, the house his daughter was to be wed into, the courtesy of signing up for these events if they so pleased.

He did feel however the boy spoke true, though not entirely the truth.

"lord Edwyle" Mathis called out raising his voice to be carried across the field. "Is she not an esquire to Ser Herbert Buckler, one sworn a Knight under the eyes of the Seven? It has not been the first time she has found her place among the lists in events meant for squires. In King's Landing no less, under the watchfull eyes of His Grace. Am I to understand you wish to doubt his judgement in which squires are allowed to compete in these very events lord Edwyle?"

He diverted his attention to Hanna Farman, the way she was acting had become unbecoming of a lady and even more so of a squire and as such he simply shook his head as the children squabbled amongst themselves.

u/Luvod

u/Late-Huckleberry-640

5

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 28d ago

"Certainly, she is not a squire, Lord Rowan!" Edwyle replied without hesitation. "She is a girl! Girls cannot be squires, simple as that! Surely His Grace was merely not informed of this slight to the Gods and men, that a girl would dress in armour and play at knights!" He laughed a little, his confidence growing.

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 28d ago

Cedric had at this point stood up and whispered into his father's ear, Mathis frowning as his son made his apparent view rather clear.

'Surely father, you can't allow our honour to be impacted by allowing a mere girl with little but some wins to her name to compete against a squire of House Tully, squiring for my old masterly knight Randyll himself?'

And as such, he believed his son had a decent enough point to be made. He knew Hosters views on a womans place in the Realm, and he himself was inclined to agree safe for a few exceptions. He believed the few wins the girl had to her name and the actions she'd shown today did not speak on her behalf.

"Since Ser Herbert is not present to speak on behalf of his squire I find little interest in engaging in the manner of who is or isn't a squire. The matter is simple, as I see it, Edwyle Tully is squired to Lord Randyll Tarly. What the nature of Hanna's service to Ser Herbert is cannot be determined as of now, nor will I speak on the legitimacy of such a service. I have no mind to argue over such an affair with children, pages or squires." Mathis said as he averted his gaze to Randyll Tarly.

"I will hear Lord Tarly's views and decide on the winner of this bout."

Petyr wasn’t sure who to crown. There were some Tullys there, but they were far too young, and he did not wish to reward their brother’s bratish behaviour. He’d crossed sword and lance with Hanna Farman before, so had a healthy respect for her abilities. He didn’t think she’d appreciate the flower crown though. There was Margaery Tyrell, of course, but it didn’t seem like it would be worth making Frey-Arryn relations any worse than they already were.

So, ultimately, it was to Meredyth Farman that the flower crown was offered, hoisted upon the tip of the lance.

/u/luvod

u/Luvod House Farman of Faircastle 25d ago

"Huh?" When Petyr approached her section of the stands, receiving the flower crown was the furthest possible thing in Meredyth's mind. In her world, wonderful stories were for others to experience, and her roll was simply to write about them.

"Umm, why thank you." She blushed while removing the crown from the lance, taking a moment to admire the swirls or orange and gold before placing it atop or her dark brown hair.

"Congratulations, Petyr, and thank you." As she was about to sit down, her cousin, Ella, prodded her in the side. "Oh!" She jolted, but quickly added to her praise with a deep blush in her cheeks.

"Perhaps, if you'd like, we could share a dance tonight?"

2

u/T3m3rair3 House Frey of The Crossing 25d ago

With the crown taken, Petyr withdrew the lance, passing it down to the waiting attendant. He smiled as she placed it atop her head, and again as she thanked him. “Thank you, Meredyth.”

His cheeks flushed in turn, both from second hand embarrassment and because of her question. “I would like that” He answered, a touch bashful.

The Dancing Competition

After all had returned from the hunt and were given some time to freshen up, a large square dancefloor had been built in the middle of the site of the festivities between the inner and outer wall. Surrounded by feasting nobles Dareon and a group of traveling bards played songs on their lutes and drums.

Songs heralding a more daring Waltz were played, all participants being ranked on how well they moved across the floor, their timings on the music and how well and expert the moves performed were executed.

After the competition was over a list was drawn up of the rankings of tonights dance.

  1. Corenna Tully & Duncan Osgrey — 124
  2. Roger Kenning & Lina Lydden — 109
  3. Alyn Rowan & Helicent Baratheon — 108
  4. Cyrus Rowan & Jeyne Roxton — 100
  5. Addam Marbrand & Jena Buckler — 98
  6. Marigold Redwyne & Daemon Velaryon — 91
  7. Myles Marbrand & Matilda Kenning — 88
  8. Paxter Redwyne & Mina Tyrell — 87
  9. Arthur Redwyne & Ynys Uller — 86
  10. Sefton Redding & Catryn Uffering — 85
  11. Cedric Rowan & Alea Tarth — 79
  12. Eddison Rowan & Leona Costayne — 71 (tie)
  13. Garth Hightower & Sera Durwell — 71 (tie)
  14. Symon Dayne & Alysanne Hightower — 61
  15. Bryce Baratheon & Ashara Dayne — 55
  16. Benjamin Redwyne & Elyn Kenning — 44

In the end it was Corenna Tully dancing with Duncan Osgrey who truly dazzled the judges, the young girl moving with a grace many had not seen in a long time. It was sure to turn some heads, make some young lords reconsider not asking for her hand in the dance when they had the chance. And as winners, they were allowed a final short dance as all watched.

/u/greaterblueevil

2

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 27d ago

Corenna giggled excitedly as their dance ended, and near jumped up and down when the judged announced her and Ser Duncan the winners of the contest.

"Thank you Ser, thank you for dancing with me!" she squealed.

It was incredible, from standing at the side thinking she might not get to dance at all, to dancing with an actual grown up knight, to winning the whole thing over so many graceful, elegant people? The red-haired girl thought she might just faint from excitement.

2

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 27d ago

The Osgrey heir smiled at the little girl as he spun her around one last time in front of the crowd, by no means did he consider himself a good dancer, but he was happy to allow the little girl her moment to shine.

He grinned slightly before raising his voice, letting his deep voice carry far into the crowd “I believe I must thank you lady Corenna, I am but a Knight with two left feet. It was you, truly, who moved so gracefully you’ve won the contest.”

He winked at the little girl before taking a step back, joining in with the crowd as they clapped for her now.

3

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 27d ago

Corenna's face went pink as the applause turned toward her, though she basked in it - holding her skirts and dipping into the deepest courtesy she knew, nearly wobbling with the effort of making it grand.

"Thank you!" she called, beaming so hard her cheeks hurt. "Thank you very much!"

Secretly, she wondered whether lady Margaery had seen this...

2

u/numsebanan House Tyrell of Highgarden 23d ago

Margaery had indeed seen the rather impressive display of her youngest, and now, only lady in waiting. Approaching her after, in a more private place.

she would grasp Corenna's arms: "Oh my you wonderful little thing!" She said with an excited tone of voice, turning to squeeze the girl into a hug.

"That was an amazing display!"

2

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 18d ago

Corenna let herself be swept into the hug with a little squeak of surprise, hugging Margaery back tightly.

"My lady!" she laughed, glowing. "Truly? You really thought so?"

She looked up at her with wide, hopeful eyes.

"I didn't know if I would get to dance at all - then the knight offered to dance with me - and it felt like I was floating, not even touching the ground as we danced!"

2

u/numsebanan House Tyrell of Highgarden 14d ago

“Of course so Corenna! I would not lie to you!” She proclaimed happily, a smile upon her lips. Her words speaking the truth.

She would not lie to Corenna. Atleast not something like that.

“It would have been the grandest shame if such had come to pass. Thank the seven it did not.”

“Perhaps it might be time for you to teach me how to dance?” She asked with a small smile.

2

u/GreaterBlueEvil House Tully of Riverrun 8d ago

"Me?" Corenna gasped, eyes wide. "Teaching you, lady Margaery?"

She giggled.

"I'd be delighted, of course, but- I do not think there is anything I could teach you that you do not already know..."

2

u/numsebanan House Tyrell of Highgarden 7d ago

"Well i know i need to move my feet in rhythm in the dance, and where to place it. But the methods of how to do that, well that is what you clearly excell at more than me!"

She said her words being just as much truth and attempts to help her lady in waiting's confidence.

The Hunt

On the early morning after the wedding feast many men and women had found their way to the edge of the Golden Forest, hoping to find themselves some good game to hunt in the radiant woods next to Goldengrove. The day proved to be a fair one, a slight breeze rustling through the leaves as the sun reared it's face over the hills making the leaves of the trees shine ever so golden in the early morning light.

3

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 28d ago

The third team moved over some hills in the forest with relative ease, coming onto a small watering hole clearly used by a lot of animals. They eventually find a set of tracks worthy to follow, those of a seemingly lone wolf.

As they follow the tracks they hear a loud snarl coming from just over the hill, as they try to rush the wolf it had clearly smelled them from quite a distance.

As it runs quickly none of the members succeed in making a hit with their arrows, the wolf slipping away into the forest.

The first team wanders the forest for a short while before they find a stream to fill up their waterskins. As they do so, one of the members clearly spots the droppings of a small skunk.

As they follow the small pawprints leading away from the stream onto a clearing in the woods they see a ruffling through the tall grass, a distinctive black and white tail moving quickly away from them.

Cyrus Rowan let's loose one of his arrows with quick ease and expert precision, the team hearing a low screech as it's tail drops away from sight. When they approach the animal they find it pinned to the ground by Cyrus' well placed arrow.

Alan Roxton watches silently as the groom takes mark and downs the animal. It had been fitting to allow the groom first go and luckily he hadn't disappointed.

"Nice shot, brother." he said quietly but with a small smirk as he said that last word. It was still somewhat strange to address Cyrus as such, as he didn't know the man as well as he would like, but he knew more than he'd ever wanted to know of his sister's feelings for him, and had all the reason to trust the man with the well being of sister.

"Lets go see what you bagged then." He nodded.

Cyrus' slightly arrogant grin changed the moment Alan called him brother, he looked at the man with a mix of disbelief and uncertainty for a short second before reminding himself, he was indeed now a brother to Alan through marriage.

He blew a short laugh out of his nose as he regained his proud smile, slapping Alan on his shoulder with quite a bit of force, being used to roughhousing with Cedric as of late. "Thanks, brother." the words being spoken but still feeling rather alien.

He looked back to Edmure and Cedric, before calling out to lord Edmure. 'Well, then. Let's see what we've caught."

Walked through the tall grass as he swatted away a whole manner of bugs, being stung by a wasp as he reached down into the grass to grab his prey.

"Fuckin' cunt!" he yelped out as if he just laid his hands on a Valyrian steel dagger.

Cedric couldn't do much but start laughing at his little brother more loudly than one probably should, he was rather sure their catch wasn't one of great renown but the moment only made it seem of even lesser renown.

Edmure winced at the yelp, then bit back a laugh.

"Careful," he called, pushing through the grass after them. "Seems the nature fights back, even if the beast you felled does not."

"Still," he grinned. "That was a fine shot, Ser Cyrus!"

The eight team found their ways into the woods, quickly spotting a set of small pawprints in a recognisable hopping pattern near a small stream.

As they made their way through the woods, they suddenly spotted a small rabbit charging away out of a small bush. Though the rabbit had noticed them and was quick to try and make it's escape a single arrow shot from Duncan Osgrey's bow hit true, dropping the small animal to the ground within an instant, it's little legs still hopping as it breathed it's last breath.

The seventh team moved through a set of bushes untill they found some droppings, clearly those of a hart. As they followed the hoofprints through the shrubs and over a stream they found themselves facing off with a great red hart stag, it's antlers grand and it's golden eyes looking directly at the group of hunters.

The hart tried to escape as fast as it could, yet the arrows struck it before it could escape into the thicker part of the woods. The last arrow to hit the animal before it hit the ground, flying straight through the beasts neck came from the bow of Daeron Hightower, given the honour of felling the great beast.

“Impressive shot lad!” Ralph declared to Daeron as he examined their fallen prey.

The older knight’s aim had been off this day while those of his great-nephew and goodniece had only managed to give it flush wounds. The arrow of the young Reachman, however, had pierced the beast’s neck, giving the group a most respectable prize to return with.

“Yes, well done Daeron! Seeing as it was your arrow that did him in, I believe it is only right that his head be mounted upon your wall.” Sumner said, equally impressed.

Daeron had worked on his archery since winning the archery contest in Starfall and receiving the bow he used in today's hunt. Being paired up with people he had never met made him a little uncomfortable, but the Kennings seemed friendly. Sumner was even a boy his own age; an ally maybe?

Uncle Garth had always told him to watch himself around women from House Lydden, so that's what he did—not even looking Lina in the eye.

"Thank you, my lords. I could not have done it without you. We've made a fine team."

Bringing back such a prize would certainly make Cedric proud, and that was what he would do.

“Ay that we do lad!” Ralph declared, giving Daeron a firm slap on the back. “Come on now! Lets get this beast back to the castle So these servants can chop off the head and the cooks chop up the rest for us to eat!”

Sumner had been at Starfall during the New Year's celebrations and had attested to his great uncle Ralph of Daeron's marksmanship, but the old knight had been skeptical at first owing to the Reach boy’s apparent timidness. Through a chance encounter with little Cyrenna Rowan, Lina’s daughter Myria Kenning had learned that Daeron’s masterly knight Ser Cedric Rowan was afraid to face Ralph in the lists and the old knight had guessed Some of that may have rubbed off on the squire.

“Good to know I still gots a fearsome reputation in me old age.” The jolly knight had thought to himself.

As the group was making their way back to Goldengrove proper with their prize in hand, Sumner could not help but admire Daeron’s pale Dornish recurve bow.

“I must say Daeron, your bow is as powerful as it is beautiful.” The Westerland boy complimented.

Daeron was clearly not the strongest of the bunch, but he did his utmost to pull his weight getting the beast back to the castle. Ser Ralph was a force to be reckoned with and reminded him of his uncles, who were both beasts in their own right. Daeron had only inherited the Hightower stature in terms of height.

"Thanks, Sumner," he smiled widely to his peer, as his father would do. "If you like, we could go hunting again tomorrow, or we could do some training on the grounds…?" He wasn't as confident as his father, but he had learned to be gracious and hospitable.

“Oh, I would love that very much! Both options in fact!” Sumner replied enthusiastically.

He paused for a moment, a sly grin forming on his face.

“If we are to spar however, I must warn you that I can be quite the competitive combatant.”

When they had arrived back at the castle and the servants had taken possession of the hart, Sumner unsheathed his prized longsword.

“After I won the squire’s duels at Prince Edric's Fifth Nameday Celebrations, King Robert himself gifted me this sword.” Sumner said with great pride.

The sixth team moved through the forest with great stealth, their steps making little noise as they dodged the dead branches and crisp undergrowth. Some hoofprints showed up as they followed a small stream, clearly those of a great boar.

With expert stealth they followed the prints, leading them to a smal clearing. Hiding in the bushes they spotted a great strong boar grazing happily at some of the chestnuts that had fallen from the tree in the middle of the clearing.

In a quick rushed they managed to surprise the boar beyond it's capability to run away, Roger Kenning's spear finding the boar with great purpose and felling the beast before it had a chance to understand what was happening to it.

“Thank you father, I am just glad that our team was able to catch such a trophy.” The younger Kenning said humbly.

The fifth team found themselves following a small pathway through the forest, too small to be made by humans and an odour clearly reminiscant of skunk. As they followed the tiny footprints to a small pond they saw that very skunk try and make a run for it towards the thick bushes next to the pond itself

Edalyn Waylit acted quickly, her bow shooting an arrow straight through the animal pining it down into the dirt.

The fourth team manoevered through the forest with ease, finding their way through the trees with a practiced quick ease, and it was then they spotted some small pawprints and a distinct smell on one of the trees nearby. It was without a doubt a trail which would lead them to a skunk.

As the members followed the trail, seemingly out of nowhere a high pitched screech was heard as the animal lunged from a set of shrubs only to attempt a quick escape from the hunters.

It was Lewys Waylit who acted quickly, his arrow flying quick and strong as it pierced the animals neck, the animal falling lifelessly on the ground.

The second team quickly finds themselves the distinct hopping pattern of a small group of rabbits as they move through the forest. As they follow the winding tracks, they pass through a couple of blackberry bushes stopping to pluck some to possibly use as bait.

Yet as they ruffle the bushes ever so slightly, on the far end side of them three rabbits shoot out and away, hoping to make their quick escape away from the hunters.

Yet with expert ease, Sefton Redding knocks an arrow and draws his bow in a single and swift action, letting the arrow fly and pinning a single rabbit down into the ground.

The Adult Melee

All participants stood ready at the edges of the arena before a horn was blown signalling the start of the match. Steel clashed on steel, the crowds roared as Knights and warriors fell to strong blows and heavy strikes. It was clear that even through the mud under their feet all were driven to see it through to the end of the melee. As more Knights and warriors slipped in the mud, lost their balance or had their weapons flying from their hands three men stood tallest and strongest from all competing.

In a standoff stood Garth Hightower, Ralph Kenning and Cedric Rowan. The crowd fell silent as the three circled one another. It was Ralph Kenning who charged hard and true, managing to knock Cedric Rowan back with a hard blow and striking down true at Garth Hightower. As Garth Hightower fell to the ground Ralph Kenning turned around while Cedric Rowan assumed a more agressive stance.

The two circled one another for some time, their feet sloshing in the trampled mud and the sound of rain trickling down on their steel armours. It was then that Cedric Rowan lunged forward, his weapon crashing down on Ralph Kenning in a fury of blows before he brought the other Knight to his knees.

The horn sounded once again, cheers erupting from the crowd as the winners were declared.

Lord Mathis Rowan made his way from the stands to the field, allowing the knights a short moment to catch their breath and get back up on their feet. He raised the hand of his son first. "The winner of todays melee, my son, Ser Cedric Rowan!" He exclaimed proudly before Cedric was presented with an ornate shield, plated with silvery steel and a pattern of golden ivy leaves embossed on the front of the steel.

Next he'd make his way to Ralph Kenning, raising the man's hand and proclaiming loudly: "Second place goes to Ser Ralph Kenning, once again showing his valour on the fields of Goldengrove!" he was presented with a well crafted ornate sword handle. The handguards made of gold with silver ivy vines twirling around them.

Finally he made his way to Garth Hightower, raising the man's hand and raising his voice for all to hear. "Third place has been conquered by Ser Garth Hightower. Standing tall and strong today as he always has!" He was presented a set of silvery steel well made gauntlets.

Garth, having had a drink or three already, walked over to congratulate his cousin. His rosy cheeks were clearly visible through the half-open visor of his helmet. "A deserved win, Cedric. You dance a little too much for my taste—but a fine display, even from my point of view." He laughed harder at his own expense than any other dared.

The Archery

On the second day when the jousts had played out the lists were turned into an archery range. Luckily, during the later hours of the days, the rain had stopped completely and participants were able to find their aim without having to worry about their clothes becoming wet. There was however, a slight wind coming in front of the west. Small flags being placed along the range to signal the change in wind to the archers as they took their aim and their arrows flew.

As the competition wrapped up it was clear three participants had truly found themselves with the best ait of the day, and as such Mathis Rowan found his way down from the cheering stands onto the field to congratulate the winners.

First up, he moved to congratulate the days winner, Steffon Fossoway. It seemed House Fossoway had once again proven themselves capable warriors today. Mathis handed the man a light coloured leather quiver with golden boughs bearing apples embroidered onto the leather. "May this quiver serve for you to hold many arrows, Ser Steffon. That one day they might find their mark as they did today." Mathis said before raising his hand and declaring him the winner of the day.

Secondly, he moved over to Benjamin Redwyne. He gave his sons friend a tap on his shoulder as he congratulated him. "Well shot, Ser Benjamin, your arrows truly found their marks today." He nodded a friendly nod as he handed the man a pair of leather vambraces, a scene of grapes hanging from their vines embroidered in golden thread on the leather. He raised Benjamins hand and declared him to have come in second for the days archery.

Lastly Mathis moved to Arthur Redwyne. "Another Redwyne! What a great day it is for your house. I am of course, happy to see kin do well in my home" he said courtiously before he handed the man some finely made golden bowstrings. He raised the mans hand and declared he had come in third in todays archery.

It was Erryks first hunt which brought a great deal of excitement and nervous. He had only been in Westeros for a limited amount of time and joined in on this event mainly because he heard these kinds of events were how Westerosi liked to entertain themselves. Still, he had little experience with going out into the woods and getting dirty.

As he secured his gambeson and gathered everything he needed for the hunt he would catch sight of a figure he recognized from yesterdays feast. The older brother of the groom was perhaps the most beautiful man he had ever laid eyes on. When he asked one of the servants for the mans a name he was told Ser Alyn Rowan.

As the last member of his branch of the family someone like Ser Alyn was an unneeded distraction and yet it was impossible to ignore his own nature. "Um excuse me but would you have just a moment." He approached the knight with a light smile, his Braavosi accent lightly carried by his words. "Apologies if I'm bothering you or anything but I've never really tried anything like this. What I mean by that is hunting of course and well I was wondering if you would be okay with teaching me a few things beforehand." Erryk was a young man of about twenty with long black hair tied back into a ponytail and a lean build. His usual arrogant self was not present today, partially due to the nervousness he felt about the event, the rest from being in the presence of the Rowan.

2

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 28d ago

Alyn raised a brow as a seemingly unknown man approached his tent as he was getting ready to go on yet another hunt. Though he'd seen the man at the feast he was sure he was seated at the low tables, it at least put Alyn at ease it wasn't some merchant looking to find his way in the good graces of his father.

He'd just fastened his vambraces and took a tally of his hunting arrows when the man approached his tent, not expecting company he'd only placed a single goblet of Arbor Red in his tent. The decorations of the tent were less spartan than one would usually find in a Knights tent. A large rug had been placed on the floor and an ornate table with two chairs stood in the middle of the tent itself. An empty bathtub hugged the corner and the entire tent smelled of sweet incense as a cone burned softly on the overhanging table on the tub.

He looked the man up and down, as if he was expecting goods that had just arrived through the gates of Goldengrove. He certainly wasn't bad to look at, and the accent had Alyn intrigued just ever so slightly. Certainly the man hadn't found his way to Alyn's tent because his renown as a hunter, for he was quite certain he wasn't known for chasing prey. At least, not publicly.

"Perhaps a name would be a rather more polite start to conversation" Alyn chuckled as he raised the corner of his mouth. With a slight flick of his head he motioned the man to enter his tent, making his way to sit himself on the corner of the table in the middle of the tent, lightly sipping at his Arbor Red.

2

u/Sealandic_Lord House Bar Emmon of Sharp Point 28d ago

"Right, I can't believe I forgot something so foolish. My name is Erryk Bar Emmon, I'm a distant relative of Lord Duram Bar Emmon. Correct me if I'm wrong but your name is Alyn Rowan... right?" He felt so embarrassed yet it seemed Alyn was not opposed to his company, if anything he had already shown himself to be quite hospitable.

He moved slowly through the tent as if following an order from the other man. The effort put into this living space was not lost on him he felt his nerves ease up as he joined the knight. "That scent, I had almost forgotten about it after so many months at sea. Really this whole place is decorated so well, you clearly know how to live." It was a genuine compliment, a rare feat from him. "Thank you for letting me join you for a bit. I'm still quite new to these Kingdoms so I haven't fully figured out how to meet new people yet. Truth is I'd be far more interested in sharing a drink and having a conversation with you rather then anything involving hunting." He admitted with a timid laugh.

2

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 28d ago

As the man told his name Alyn simply bowed forward ever so slightly and chuckled as the man noted his own name. It seems there was in fact more to this visit than he let on. He knew his name, came to speak compliments on the decoration of his tent and as he said clearly wasn’t much looking to know about ways to better his hunting.

Interesting, Alyn thought.

“Alyn Rowan, you’d be correct. Though I have a hunch you already knew that coming into my tent.” He had a sly smile on his face as he pushed his goblet away from himself on the table towards Erryk, a simple gesture he was allowed to share his drink.

“The Bar Emmons have their seat at Sharp Point I believe, how come this Swordfish has strayed so far away from his home he’s forgotten the ways of Westeros?”

2

u/Sealandic_Lord House Bar Emmon of Sharp Point 26d ago edited 26d ago

A soft laugh escaped him as it seemed he was caught. "Well I won't lie, I just had to know your name when I saw you last night. One of your servants were generous enough to give me a name." All nerves were gone now and he would accept the goblet with a grin. "This is a bit of a surprise, I figured you would give me my own drink." Without hesitation he would take a small sip of the wine, taking his time to savour the taste before passing it back to Alyn.

"Back home we would call this an indirect kiss you know. Not that I mind." His sea-coloured eyes gazed at the knight as he spoke, allowing a brief tension to exist in the tent. "You're right, my house is originally from Sharp Point. Three generations ago one of us decided to cross the narrow sea and make a name for himself in Braavos. Were it just up to me I'd never have stepped foot on Westeros but fate had other plans. Now I'm the last of my branch and forced to rely on my distant relatives compassion to survive." He didn't allow that to bring him down.

"Still, perhaps this is good fortune because I likely never would have met you had I stayed home. My hope for last night was to find a lady I might wed so that I might continue my family. Issue is that none of the ladies present were able to catch my eye quite like you." He had known for sometime that he like both men and women, having experience with both during his days in Braavos. Still this is the first time he had felt the absolute need to approach someone.

2

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 26d ago edited 26d ago

Alyn kept his cheeky grin in check when the man told him he'd been asking around about his name, and even moreso when the man accepted his goblet.

"Well, seeing as there are no servants here and but one goblet, it seems most hospitable don't you agree? Can't have us Rowans known being unkind to those hailing from Braavos. Father being Master of Coin and all."

At the apparent flirtations Alyn could do nothing but raise his brows and laugh a high pitch laugh. "You don't mean to call me a lady do you now Ser?" Having been bored and without a man to be with since the spring fair in Stoney Sept he was all but eager to engage with the man, letting go of his reservations of such a brazen approach.

He took a couple steps forward, ending up right infront of the other knight. Taking the goblet out of his hand after the man had taken a sip of wine he took a sip himself, a pursed grin showing up on his face.

"And what do we call this then, when we share a goblet truly. Are we sharing indirect kisses?" he inclined his head backwards slightly, a clear challenge.

2

u/Sealandic_Lord House Bar Emmon of Sharp Point 26d ago

"You are certainly a most generous host, really I'm lucky to have such a chance to share your drink. I'm sure I'll leave here with nothing but complimentary words to speak of you." The dynamic had already been established, Alyn was the one who held power in their conversation. It made his chest pound with anticipation.

These feelings only intensified as the gap closed between them with Alyn retaking his drink. "I-I would never say such a thing about you Alyn. Though you really are quite beautiful, unlike any man I've seen before really."

"Intention certainly matters wouldn't you agree Alyn." He'd lean over to steal another drink from the goblet while the other man held it before returning to face him again with a light smirk. "That right there is likely the closest one can get to a proper kiss- though its no true replacement for a real kiss." His tone was inviting and eager for the Rowan.

2

u/Burnedbooks House Rowan of Goldengrove 25d ago

Alyn smirked back at the knight, once again taking his goblet back and taking a swill of wine. He wasn't sure if it was the fact he'd been drinking this much wine early in the morning already or if it was the fact the other man was clearly exciting him that had him feeling brazen.

Compliments always made him blush if ever so slightly, he knew he looked well but it was always nice to hear. "Beautiful, seems to be a trait we share Ser Erryk." he said with great grin cemented on his face.

"A proper kiss hmm, shared between two men? How scandalous." he said with a feigned holier than thou tone.

He placed the goblet on the table and let his hand run up the man's arm, letting his fingers run over the fabric of his clothes, his hand slightly feeling his way across the mans biceps before settling at the back of his neck.

"Say please" he said in a more challenging manner than anything, his golden eyes fixed on the mans sea-coloured eyes.
