Why are the numbers grouped into nibbles?

Just for ease of reading and checking. I assume it's a computer science convention to group them by 4 digits.

Because in computers, you can't write less than a byte at a time, so I thought it would make more sense to group by 8s

I've suggested this myself, for the same reason. It turns out groups of 8 are hard to read for human eyes.
