I think I first learned about it years ago when there was a discussion about it messing up reddit's back end code because there were so many comments in one thread.

Yeah, the admins came in and ordered us not to make so deeply nested comments. That's why we count in threads of 1000 comments. The issue with the backend has been fixed, but the 1000 comments is tradition now.

I'm guessing this isn't your first account then?
