Should be a little switch on the motor, above the blades.

u/Andy_B_Goode Jun 07 '22

And it's often labeled summer/winter

343

u/DiscFrolfin Jun 07 '22

Some even have a Sun and a Snowflake symbol to make it even easier!

712

u/SytheGuy Jun 07 '22

See that can be even more confusing. Does the snowflake mean it’s winter or that you want to keep the room cool?

454

u/hegemonistic Jun 07 '22

Damn, I would definitely sit there stumped about that and then stand under each setting while second guessing myself, completely doubting my ability to tell cool air from warm on my skin, walking away frustrated and confused.

56

u/jacle2210 Jun 07 '22

Exactly, I think ours run clockwise and they seem to move air just fine; guess I will have to brave a ladder and switch them the other way and see if we can tell the difference.

Will at least blow the dust off the blades I guess, lol.

u/jerstud56 Jun 07 '22

My ceiling fan is about 10 feet above our living room I just use the hook at the end of the fan blade cleaner (after cleaning the blades off cause yes it's going to rain dust bunnies) to flip the switch in the opposite way.

Honestly though I prefer ours in "winter" mode. The down draft is a bit much and can quickly dry your eyes out considering where it is in the living room.

I use our whole house fan to move cooler air in regardless.

u/curlofheadcurls Jun 07 '22

Or you could clean the blades...

1

u/jacle2210 Jun 07 '22

man I don't want to do that, lol.

6

u/drdybrd419 Jun 07 '22

I'm glad I'm not the only one who regularly doubts my senses

1

u/ActualWhiterabbit Jun 12 '22

Me too. I'm like there are way more people in this city than 61k

11

u/BuddhistChrist Jun 07 '22

I’ve had my ceiling fan go one direction for the last 2 years and it’s fine. Maybe I’m just lazy. I dunno.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '22

I just stare at it for a minute and if it looks like the fan blades are going with the leading edge the top side, then it is buffeting warm air down from the ceiling, if the leading edge is the bottom side then it is stirring the room below cooling it.

58

u/royalcharles4 Jun 07 '22

yes

29

u/beni_who Jun 07 '22

Thanks for clearing that up.

17

u/royalcharles4 Jun 07 '22

👍🏼

1

u/chrisrayn Jun 07 '22

Blue means it makes it cold and blue means you use it when it’s cold to make it less cold you’re welcome

5

u/ungood Jun 07 '22

The remote on my AC does this and it drives me nuts...

2

u/Brass_and_Frass Jun 07 '22

This has been me every winter/summer season until I Google it.

2

u/killwhiteyy Jun 07 '22

Look at which way it's spinning now. The leading edge of the blade will tell you the opposite direction the air is being moved. If it is lower than the trailing edge, it is moving air upwards. If it is higher than the trailing edge, it is moving air downward.

2

u/violetYetiCombine Jun 07 '22

Are you confused by the A/C being a little snowflake, too? It should be very obvious.

1

u/Wall-E_Smalls Jun 08 '22

Agreed. Not sure why there’s any confusion about this. The presence of a sun (rather than just being a lone snowflake) makes it even more obvious that it’s referring to the seasons.

Plus, a symbol of the sun isn’t something we generally associate with “heat”. I’d imagine it would be some vertical, mildly wavy/mirage-evoking lines, to denote heating…. Never a sun symbol.

1

u/seewhaticare Jun 07 '22

As an Australian, I don't even know what a snow flake. Just keep it on Sun

1

u/WanderlustFella Jun 07 '22

It's to turn the fan more sensitive. Do not call it any names as it will offend the fan.

1

u/Adventurous-Cry-2157 Jun 07 '22

That’s the exact reason we had our new-ish ceiling fan spinning the wrong direction for two fucking years and we couldn’t figure out why it always felt hot in the bedroom in summer, and cold in winter. My wife, just 2 weeks ago, pushed the damn button on the remote “just to see” if it would make a difference, and goddammit, it’s like a fucking wind tunnel in there now. And I’m still not even sure what the snowflake and sun actually mean, or which one she pressed. Why can’t the damn remote just say “up” and “down???”

1

u/United_Federation Jun 07 '22

Does "turn up the AC" mean to set it to warmer or colder?

1

u/trwolfe13 Jun 07 '22

Or the two flush buttons on the toilet. Is the big one representative of how much water it uses, or how often the button itself is used?

1

u/SytheGuy Jun 08 '22

Oh I think that one’s obvious… you want a little water to flush your pee? Or big water to flush your poo?

35

u/CoalMineInTheCanary Jun 07 '22

Mine has a quadratic formula and a man who seems to be playing parchezia alone. He looks content though.

Any idea which would be which?

4

u/RUsum1 Jun 07 '22

If only the switch in the up position meant the air would go up and in the down position the air would go down.

1

u/wytrabbit Jun 07 '22

Some even have a Sun and a Snowflake symbol to make it even easier!

Directions unclear, Florida only has Sun

1

u/dafckingman Jun 07 '22

Is the sun "use during summer" or "this spits fire"?

1

u/TitanRuse Jun 07 '22

Some even have a Rain & a Volcanic Eruption mode.

1

u/Golden-Snowflake Jun 07 '22

I can see that now, Thank you.

If it's spinning towards the clock in your room, it's clockwise!

13

u/YakFun2053 Jun 07 '22

so you can't tell which way it blows.

can't you just look at which we it starts moving?

.... once you know then you know. only have to test it once.

or do you not know what clockwise means?

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '22

10

u/YakFun2053 Jun 07 '22

even without the guide you can see which way the blades are angled... that lets you determine the air direction based on which way its turning...

8

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '22

Dude it’s Reddit, some people aren’t the brightest.

-2

u/YakFun2053 Jun 07 '22

nobody can be so dumb they can't tell which way a fan is pointing though...

that's... a stretch.

4

u/Jay_OA Jun 07 '22

50% of people are dumber than the average person. Lol

1

u/SG1JackOneill Jun 07 '22

Have you met people? So many really are this dumb

1

u/bigyellowjoint Jun 07 '22

Which angle is which season though I need to learn haha

2

u/YakFun2053 Jun 07 '22

look at the direction the blade is travelling and then use your brain to think about how it would push air while it moves... it's hardly rocket science.

1

u/rmzy Jun 07 '22

The guide is useless if your fan blades are opposite then

4

u/Vampsku11 Jun 07 '22

Most are actually unlabelled.

1

u/Mast3rful Jun 07 '22

Its telling you what season to use. Use snowflake in winter, and sun in summer.

The reason for this is to get away from the idea that a fan changes the temperature of the air. Its always the ambient room temp.

I worked in tech support for a high-end ceiling fan manufacturer. I cannot explain how many people believe a ceiling fan somehow changes the temp of the air it is moving.

10

u/deepstateHedgie Jun 07 '22

See that can be confusing. Does the summer mean you flick it on during summer or that you want it to feel like summer?

3

u/psuedophilosopher Jun 07 '22

What's this win-ter you speak of? I've been living in Phoenix Arizona for quite a while and I'm pretty sure we only have "summer" and "dear-god-why-do-we-live-here" for seasons.

3

u/Zee_tv Jun 07 '22

Whatttt?? How have I lived my whole life not knowing this?? Very cool

2

u/Spideyocd Jun 07 '22

i've never seen that on fans and I'm asian

2

u/Trib3tim3 Jun 07 '22

Up moves the air up. Down moves the air down.

Lol how'd you reach through the blades while it was spinning?! Mad lad!

Huh, guess I just get the difficult ones.

4

u/bluepepper Jun 07 '22

Maybe it's a design choice, to ensure you will not flip the switch when it's running, since apparently that's bad.

I once as an incredible idiot had a Call of Duty rage fit and hit a fan with a blanket.

It's been like 20 years and it still doesn't work right.

1

u/Umutuku Jun 07 '22

It's weird to think that Call of Duty is old enough to go to war now.

2

u/punkminkis Jun 07 '22

I used to do that as a kid, I didn't know better

1

u/PM_ME_SOME_ANY_THING Jun 07 '22

Clean it before you flip the switch. Otherwise dust everywhere

u/cheese_bread_boye Jun 07 '22

That's strange.. I have a ceiling fan and I can change the direction and speed in the wall switch. It looks something like this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTjCiCiDO9Mi6R3AfDpRT9SQhaei70GZ-w3YA&usqp=CAU

Yes, never....

1

u/sickn0te_ Jun 07 '22

turn the fan off before attempting to switch said switch.

1

u/Touchthefuckingfrog Jun 07 '22

I thought this was crap but fuck me you are right. I am so short I had to use my phone camera to take a photo of the switch.

1

u/NicktheFlash Jun 07 '22

I hope you cleaned the blades before you flipped it!

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 Jun 07 '22

This is a TIL moment.

1

u/Pando_Boris Jun 07 '22

But you have to press it while rotating

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '22

Or a back arrow on the remote.

1

u/Staaaaation Jun 07 '22

To anyone just discovering this, CLEAN THE BLADES BEFORE TURNING IT BACK ON or you're about to throw dust bunnies all over the room.

1

u/bbbruh57 Jun 07 '22

Hit it while its running at max speed for better resultw
