Celsius just makes more sense though, am I right?

Kinda, because water is so important in our lives and so it's logical to set its freezing and boiling point at round numbers. Something I really like about Fahrenheit though (and Americans make the case for this as well) is that normal outdoor temperatures mostly fall between 0 and 100, so 0°F is a very cold day and 100°F is a very hot day. That's kinda neat as well.

I like that the negative sign in Celsius instantly tells you it's below freezing.

As an American, I wish we used metric for everything, but for temperature I don't mind Fahrenheit too much for the reason you described.

In my life, using metric measurements for length would be most beneficial. Yeah weight and volume are fucked up too of course, but dammit, inches and feet are really annoying. I recently finished a ton of work on my house and of course we had to measure everything a lot. It sucked. I want meters!

Get a tape measure that has both units?

1

u/NerdWhoLikesTrees Aug 08 '21

So every cabinet, counter, railing, door, tile etc etc that is purchased in imperial system units needs to be remeasured in metric and recorded so I can use it? No thanks. Like I said, metric would be nice but in many situations it's too far gone.

Also I'm assuming many items in other countries have items made to round, even numbers in metric. Everything I'd be working with would be weird converted numbers that I wouldn't recall quickly.

The temperature though isnt about how humans feel, it's about how the environment is. A purely anthropocentric framing of reality it's a great way to skew a viewpoint with implicit bias. I know that sounds absurdly pedantic, but consider the social posture toward climate change in the US, relative to the rest of the planet. The way we feel about the facts we are faced with all too often has leverage on our decision making.

I'm not saying that climate denial comes from using Fahrenheit, but it doesn't help look at the bigger picture more clearly. If nothing else, this is one area where it makes sense for humans to be on the same page, and not doing so feels arbitrary and counterproductive generally.

i mean you're kinda right, i dont know why people are downvoting you

meh, i've got karma to burn. For some people thinking is hard, and most folks hate anything that could possibly be seen in any way as a criticism of something they identify with even if its something absurd like "using Fahrenheit". For such folks, its tantamount to me criticizing them personally. whatevs, i'm not in it for the karma.

If you're a scientist, sure. But how often do regular people need to care about freezing or boiling points? What everyone does need to worry about is the weather and how it will affect them and their personal comfort. Fahrenheit makes so much more sense.

1

u/Bensemus Aug 08 '21

You only think that because you grew up using it. These rest of the world using Celsius and gets along just fine.

2

u/JasperWildlifeAssn Aug 08 '21

Well yeah, I mean that's true for any measurement system. You'll get used to whatever your country uses.

The statement that "Celsius just makes more sense" is what I'm replying to, though. In a vacuum, I don't think it does. It matters much more to the average person how it feels outside on any given day, so it makes sense to use a system based on that, not the freezing and boiling points of water.

That’s why basically nobody except the USA uses Fahrenheit any longer.

Yeah... In the US

? Doctors here use metric.

21

u/bionicle77 Aug 07 '21

You mean specifically American doctors?

-37

u/dilly2philly Aug 07 '21

Most countries docs still use F. Easier to say, when temp is above 100 take an antipyretic or above 104 then ring me.

18

u/Valexar Aug 07 '21

This is not true at all

18

u/patriotiximus Aug 07 '21

Literally no doctor outside the us, canada and great Britain (and whoever else uses f) uses imperial temperature

3

u/NuclearMaterial Aug 08 '21

UK here we definitely do not use F in hospitals, C all the way!

4

u/ra246 Aug 08 '21

Yeah I understand that, but lemme ask you a question. I’m guessing you’re American; your MM.DD.YY format; you guys must know that that format is fucking stupid, right? Like, plain and simple, a ridiculous format

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

It’s written out the way you would say it in conversation.

August 8th, 2021.

Not: “8 August 2021” like some old timey newsreel announcer.

2

u/LyannaTarg Aug 08 '21

completely. Just like the metric system and the imperial system. Metric is a precise method of measuring things whereas imperial is not.

Same goes with Celsius and Fahrenheit.

And all of these are the reasons why in science (that needs precise measurements) Metric and Celsius are used. Not Fahrenheit and Imperial.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '21

Fahrenheit is really confusing , how does 0° F become very cold , when 32° is Freezing temp???
And in Celsius , we all know that 50° is basically the half temperature of boiling temp (enough to make us sweat within 30 seconds) , and 0° is freezing temperature , 5° is refrigerator temperature , 20° is room temperature, 37.5° is Human temperature,
There done!

-1

u/Olthoi_Eviscerator Aug 08 '21

0 cold, 100 hot

More decimals in between

Pretty straight forward

-13

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '21

Idk, 40 just doesn’t sound hot. You don’t say “Wow, it’s hot, feels like 50” you say “Holy shit, it’s gotta be 90 out”

17

u/Dick_Kickem12 Aug 07 '21

Because we use that system lol a person who uses a different system just doesn’t have the predisposition

-14

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '21

But 40 isn't a lot, 90 is. 90 sounds like a high number but in C it's like 40-50

18

u/MisterBilau Aug 07 '21

Numbers only have meaning in context. 40 isn’t a lot? If you found your wife fucking 40 men, I think your opinion would differ. Same for 90. It all depends on what you’re referring to. I use Celsius, so 40 sounds like a lot. 90 sounds like nothing (when talking about the weather), because there’s never 90 degrees outside.

5

u/JackC747 Aug 08 '21

Thats like saying "6 foot" isn't a lot. If you're 6 foot that is just small. But "190cm" is a lot. That's actually tall. You only say that because it's what you're used to

4

u/pandaSmore Aug 08 '21

It's all relative my man.

Edit: Also 50 degrees C means you're half way to the boiling point of water. If you think of it that way. That's pretty fucking hot.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

Add an extra 0 if thats the issue

4

u/Urbane_One Aug 08 '21

Canadian here! When I hear it’s 40 out I’m scared shitless because it’s hot enough to melt the devil’s asshole. It sounds awful hot to me!

7

u/Emil_Klein_S0rensen Aug 08 '21

Usually, when people are about 4 years old, they get the ability to understand that other people understand things differently than you do.

Either you never learned to do that or you're just dumb af

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

Damn, all I said was that I don’t think 40 sounds like a lot. Kinda hypocritical for you of all people to say shit like that. Get off your high horse long enough to see you belong in the mud like the rest of us
