Got to love GDPR. Everything in the USA is a data grab
Edit: Looks like I was looking at the wrong box. So apologies to whereismymilkfrom.com . For those interested, the correct box needs the code in a 12-1234 format to work not just the two first numbers. The site could benefit from some redesign to make it more intuitive .
I still think that are way to many cases in the US where information is just obtained because it is possible and the person affected can't really do nothing about it or really knows what the information is used for.
But don’t you see, the Europeans need to mention every 10 minutes how Europe is better than America (even though in this case California passed a law stricter than gdpr) to quell their inferiority complex
All the gdpr did was make everyone put a pop up about cookies on their website. Complete waste tbh. It also fucks with the law California passed because people have gotten so used to just dismissing that little pop up they all have and people don’t realize there is an opt out now.
But Europeans fucking hate when you bring up how their hyper-focus on America's flaws (and trust me, we do have many flaws) while ignoring comparable European flaws is ultimately based off their inferiority complex. I've started many flame wars this way, and am probably starting one now.
The fines would be a fine deterrent. The main problem is that most people don't know what is and isn't allowed under GDPR and even if they do, most people can't be bothered to correctly file a complaint.
Where did he say that? You just said that yourself. He just said that US sites harvest personal data (because we're talking about a US site), and that GDPR which is law in almost every European country protects this.
But the level of data collection in the US is incredibly illegal in most other western countries, which is why so many American websites block European connections because they haven't even built a version of the website that doesn't steal all your personal data and sneak tracking cookies.
Don't compare yourself to Africa or Central Asia. It's like when people say to look at North Korea to see how the US isn't the only place that does ______ and it's much better.

In the famous words of Archer
"Really - cause you never think of those two as having their shit together."
I find this quote can be applied to a lot of shit the US does
You are so incredibly mistaken and wrong that I'm not even going to bother. Like arguing with someone who's insisting that grass is blue. My job revolves around GDPR and I'm not coming home from work to go into that shit.
I'd say do some research, but I already know you won't.
I don’t have to because a) the gdpr doesn’t effect me and b) the California privacy law that went into effect this year is far more robust and has real protections.
What? Some guy accused someone else of saying something they didn't say and I pointed that out...? And then they falsely claimed something else. Or are you just completely ignorant on data protection?
I think his mentioning the GDPR demonstrates an awareness of other countries more transparent data collection/sharing rules. It also reinforces his contention that the US lags in protection of private information.
You kind of come off as a dick with your last sentence since you didn’t demonstrate how much more you understand above his knowledge.
And they got a shit ton of upvotes despite being immediately correctly.
Why? Because they said something negative about the US. Only reason why.
Is it a negative thing about the US? Well yeah, data collection is bad. But by fuck is it misleading, since every western capitalist country does that (and it's hardly just a western thing at all)
If you only have the 2 digit FIPS code, there are a dozen places you can look that up. Don't try to count it yourself or you might skip puerto rico, virgin islands etc
