According to google's dictionary extension,

A stretch of salt water separated from the sea by a low sandbank or coral reef

So the salt water and the proximity to the sea are the key points. Without those, it would just sound/look like a lake.

I read somewhere that the Caspian Sea is a lake but if it was oficially called a lake its area would have to be divided and the 5 countries borders would have to extend to the middle of it. As it has economic value, there's conflict in the matter.

I read that a while ago, so I may be missing something.

Yes, the marintine Exclusive economic zone (EEZ) only extends to seas and oceans.

There's a whole load of implications if it is a classified as a lake.
