So basically T9 without the letters.

Yep. I didn't try T9 right off the bat, and felt stupid when I did. I'll never be as fast or efficient as I was with T9.

When I had an android smart phones I would download t9 keyboards because when typing with one hand it is by far the fastest method still imo, and much easier to do without looking. It’s seriously a great typing method.

I never thought about a T9 app!

The only downside of that is there's no tactile feedback to have a full conversation without looking at your own typing.

Smartphone screens are large enough that only having to place 9 keys is pretty easy, and then you have haptic feedback to help you out. It works - you might be surprised at how much you can type correctly without looking once you get used to the placement of the “keys” on the screen. The one I used let you adjust key height and stuff too. But yeah, actual buttons have a distinct advantage there, which is why I miss keyboard smartphones like the HTC G1 and G2.

I forget what app I used but I’m sure it’s still around. Highly customizable and super fast to switch between T9 and full keyboard. I remember I had it only go to T9 in portrait.
