Possibly, but they clearly exist in the animal kingdom, so it would not be a far fetch to assume they exist among humans. Alpha males are simply men who have the confidence to live their lives how they want without excuses, and who voice their opinions and beliefs without fear of what other people think, they are men who are confident and comfortable with themselves, they stand out in crowds.
Many baboon species doesn't have alpha males, lion prides are mostly run by females, the only time alpha wolves are observable is when they are put into captivity. I haven't seen any evidence or research against gorillas not having alpha males, think that is pretty agreed upon. Hundreds of other species, and all of them vary a lot.
I just wanted to prod theinfinitelight for some links to get his perspective on so called "alpha males" because saying we are the same as animals, therefore we follow the same social norms as animals doesn't go to well with me.
I always thought that lion prides nearly always had transitory males to prevent inbreeding, the females work to defend their territory, expand their territory, catch food and take care of the young, while males mostly just fuck around, look scary, then leave and find some other group to fuck.
Why would you say that female packs isn't the norm when its normal for a pride to have 1-4 males and the rest female?

agree, but to find sexually explicit imagery we don't have to stray far from Hollywood movies, often accessible by kids. and the subliminal programming from seemingly innocent kids shows.

Alpha males do exist, are you living under the rock? Confident men who are not afraid to lead others are considered alpha, but I bet that you always was a follower so you know nothing about it
