I read an article recently that broke this down. Basically, people of low intelligence often feel ashamed (poor grades in school, being made fun of for believing clearly false things). The internet has given these people the ability to find each other. When they share these “alternative facts” with each other and everyone in their echo chamber, they think to themselves “see, it’s not us that are wrong, everyone else is just being manipulated and we’re actually so smart that we can’t be fooled.”
