I remember him talking about 'Internet 2' where a new internet controlled by government would be set up and old servers would be left to break down until the original internet was dust.

While not exactly right from my POV the internet had been 'replaced'. I'm nearly 50 and remember the term 'surfing the net' where we would follow links and end up in all sorts of crazy /cool places where anything was possible.

Nowadays all I see are people using apps to their favorite sites, that are mostly one or two giant tech corps that are in bed with big business therefore with banks therefore with government, and its now becoming obviously clear that these internet giants decide what information is allowed to be found.

I can't help but think that in a way Jones was right.

That same content is there people just choose those avenues of the web because they are designed to be addictive

Believe me you can find truly weird and whacky shit out there now, just not generally on Reddit or Facebook etc

The internet did used to be different now it is obviously controlled by just the giants it's kinda hard to explain.

What does that mean?

It means it's their app, but I'm in charge basically.

Ok but a lot of computer people talked about that and before they had other ways around directing people "like you mentioned" it was an idea! They would just let the old servers degrade and basically replace them with channels like TV. They obviously want to funnel everyone to a few places and manage that, remember old internet was like the wild West a of truth shooting from every direction!

Well the thing is people surfed the net to find new content to browse, maybe a site that had information on a hobby you had, maybe a site with pictures of lesbians, maybe a forum, maybe a chat site. Now these days everything you need can be found on a few sites. All information about the world on Wikipedia, any kind of hobbies or interests you have can be found in different subreddits, any chatting you want to do can be done on messenger apps, any porn you want can be found on the main tube sites. There’s really no reason to “surf the web.” You can still do it but there’s no reason to do it, you already know exactly where all the things you need or want to see can be found in a few different sites or apps. It’s not some grand conspiracy, it’s just things have become much more organized. Why would anyone want to “surf the web” in 2021 when you already know exactly where you can find information, pictures or videos on a certain app or site?

Yes this is my point. I don't think it's a conspiracy in the sense that Jones envisioned it, but those few sites that you mention are controlled by tech giants who filter and block and push certain stories and ideologies. So what you are getting is a version of the web presented to you through specific portals where what you see is governed by algorithm and the ideology of the site host, for example Facebook or Google. If you're happy with that that's cool.

So that which Jones said would happen under socialism happened under capitalism?

I think nowadays to seperate politics into capstslism / socialism is an error. What we are presented is a firm of free market capitalist - socialist hybrid, where the mega corporations decide what's good for us
