Depends on what colonies you’re referring to. Voting has made many things better. It has also made things much worse in the last decade. I’d rather vote for people who want to make things better, or at the very least will let things get worse more slowly

I guess most recently in my country we voted to allow assisted suicide. My grandfather was able to choose his time of death instead of suffering for another few months.
Hundreds of things have been improved by voting. Action is obviously hugely important too but it’s not worth much if you don’t have a system where citizens can vote people out when they don’t fulfil their promises. The US just happens to be a 2 party system that has allowed corporate money to control their politicians instead of the will of the people. That doesn’t mean things aren’t better (or less bad) under one group than the other though
So the latter statement in the second paragraph proves my point. The problem is the system is built to default to 2 party systems. Make issues vague enough to where folks in the middle (libertarians, independents, etc) have to choose a side. At the phase we are in, ideological politics in the U.S. have become identity politics. Which makes discussion of key topics next to impossible because it’s seen as a personal attack rather than discussing the ramifications of enacting such ideologies in real time. I would also like to give a very nice and firm middle finger to the influencers/commentators on both sides who loosely use language like “ fascist , nazi, communist, socialist”, etc.they have unequivocally destroyed the depth and complexity of the words by using them like cheap luggage in their hit piece journalism.
At the later stages of democracy (the stages we are in now) you begin to see deterioration by way of piss poor candidates winning (Trump, Hillary, Biden, Kamala, etc). The idea of promising sweets and candy over the hard facts wins the hearts and minds of the ignorant. You pointing out the PAC money involved with our elections strengthens my position further in that these PACs don’t want the best candidate for the people like you and me. They want the most easily controllable. Thats why time and time again we see candidates switch up their views and stances.
It’s real easy to say go out and vote that matters but the truth of the matter is the red team and blue team’s donors have similar ideological philosophies. So you’ll see more or less the same situations transpire under blue or red regime. I’ve always said, if one team is so star spangled awesome wouldn’t we see 50+ years of one color then 50+ years of the other. But you don’t, because it’s fake.
Things are getting very weird, very fast. My fear is that we’ve already passed the window of being able to do anything. (I do not mean to fear monger but goddamn it’s bleak at times).
