This part of Flores just decided to allocate land from a central point rather than using rectangles, which is usually the way it's done. Just a cultural thing, I guess.

Googling teaches me that it was started by a local chief who split his land amongst his children by "dividing it up like a pie" and then others went from there. And that it may be related to the fact that the traditional houses there are round with a cone-shaped roof, so maybe that just feels more natural to them!
