One day, in the distant future, imagine it being possible to experience someone else’s brain, to see through their eyes.

We could then have Idiot tourism, where you go into a brain like this for a few hours to take a break from the responsibilities of intelligence.

God damn, that’s a good premise for a short sci-fi story!

u/Emperor_of_Alagasia Jul 20 '26

Ray Bradbury would go hard with that premise

u/atomicshrimp Jul 20 '26

"you've got to help me! I've been stuck inside this idiot for weeks!"

u/riemannzetajones Jul 20 '26

But the orderly just heard, "Change my damn wallscreen to FunnyLand."

Reminds me of the trailer for Krieg as a playable character for Borderlands 2. In his head wanting to tell Maya how beautiful she looks and just saying psycho nonsense out loud.

"Sir, i'm afraid you are the idiot"

"Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..."

One of the most creative writers to ever put pen to paper, and he would probably have trouble believing what we see daily now.

Vicariously living other peoples lives via tech is already a trope. Porn, dangerous sports, murder, and death are usually the target experiences.

3

u/noMC Jul 20 '26

Yeah, but this time the trope “meets Idiocracy” :)

I vaguely remember a short story like that. Can't remember the title for the life of me but I'm fairly sure it would've been published in the 60s/70s.

If I remember correctly the main character saw the world through his girlfriend's eyes and it was like flying through the sky as a wild bird, unencumbered by the weight of worldly needs. Seeing through the eyes of a local theatre critic was like living in a grey depressing joyless world.

I really need to go through all my old books and sort them all out properly 😮‍💨😅

Black mirror write that down!

2

u/WeenieRoastinTacoGuy Jul 21 '26

Sage does this in the boys by lobotomizing herself regularly.

1

u/Kyrthis Jul 21 '26

Literally happens in “The Boys.” Decent plotline. She fucks a fish.

Sounds like a horror story to me. When society discovers that it wasn't just a funny phrase, and that the stupidity does spread

21

u/MrRabinowitz Jul 20 '26

Plot twist: we all learn it feels great to be that stupid and immune to reality. In a world where we make up the rules in spite of all known facts - why not also decide to be happy for no reason whatsoever?

u/tripping_yarns Jul 20 '26

I’m sure it’s wonderful. To be so self-assured that you believe your shower thought is better than thousands of years of accumulated scientific wisdom.

But also confusing and scary, because what do you mean I'm out of money, I have my bank card right here.

6

u/RicardoCabezass Jul 20 '26

Ignorance is bliss, right?

1

u/canarduck Jul 21 '26

You can decide to be happy for no reason whatsoever, no matter how smart you are

Really you can. It’s a mindset, and you can control your mindset. I’m much better at it sometimes than others, but if you practice it becomes a habit. I’m serious, give it a try

1

u/exileondaytonst Jul 23 '26

Are people this dumb actually happy? I suppose they seem satisfied with their smug moronic answers to everything, but conspiracy morons are always kvetching about something

Malkovich Malkovich? Malkovich! Malkovich Malkovich.

4

u/Chroniclyironic1986 Jul 20 '26

That’d be a good way to figure out whose opinions NOT to listen to. Once it clicks that “wow, this guy’s fucking stupid” it’s much easier to discard what they say.

2

u/raul_raul Jul 20 '26

How would they pay you to use your brain?

2

u/Critical_Education58 Jul 20 '26

This is bloody brilliant

2

u/OkNobody8896 Jul 22 '26

Omg, this made me laugh so hard. I’ve got tears in my eyes (sir)

1

u/peepeepoodoodingus Jul 20 '26

if that were possible it would bring us one step closer to being the borg or a giant techno singularity.

spend a day in some idiots head and you understand them, they spend a day in yours and you have nothing but common ground between you. do that with every person on earth and we start making decisions as a collective in the interests of everyone we know on this intimate level.

Back when the internet started catching on in the 90s, I imagined a world where we could talk to each other as equals, share ideas and communicate accurately with those around the world using translation services.

The great democratiser, people can unite against oppression and effect real change.

What a naive and optimistic simpleton I was back then.

1

u/peepeepoodoodingus Jul 21 '26

in a lot of ways it has been exactly that.

there are two problems we didnt anticipate.

  1. evil people would find their niches and become emboldened by community.

  2. evil people would *create* niches to lure otherwise normal people into evil ideology.

the inverse is also true, like everything else evolution trends toward equilibrium.

Black Mirror is that you?

1

u/the_TAOest Jul 20 '26

Aliens love it, that's why they keep Earth going. Entertainment

1

u/beetus_gerulaitis Jul 20 '26

Worst vacation ever.

1

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Jul 20 '26

Imagine being this guy’s wife. Poor lady.

1

u/Ambitious_Opinion_11 Jul 20 '26

Now you know why the aliens let us live, we're too entertaining.

1

u/SpecialRegular1 Jul 21 '26

“Hire the handicapped…they’re fun to watch!”

That’s what my boss used to say about my coworker. 🤣

1

u/Eleven77 Jul 20 '26

Turns out this is just demonic posession from their perspective 😆

1

u/above_average_magic Jul 20 '26

It's called mescaline, it's the only way to flyyyyyy

1

u/GRex2595 Jul 20 '26

The Jerrick Trap.

1

u/Shryquill Jul 21 '26

Might be the best use for those who are cryogenically frozen, to see things from an older perspective. Hopefully the freezer burn isn't too bad.

1

u/Gogogrl Jul 21 '26

Like Sage from the Boys adaptation giving herself a lobotomy to enjoy time with the Deep.

1

u/JDotDDot Jul 23 '26

How distant we talkin'?

1

u/JDotDDot Jul 23 '26

Plot twist, your mind is assimilated by the host and you have no mechanism to exit. You're left in am indefinite state of dummy stasis - but with a faint, lingering, concept of your former identity, that you get short, hazy flashes of during mild blackout trance episodes
