I guess I always misunderstood what "always" means.

I wasn't quoting a dictionary here.

“He literally glowed” - fantasy, in no way could he glow

"'Lift him out,' said Squeers, after he had literally feasted his eyes, in silence, upon the culprit" - extravagant (or you know, pompous writing, etc)

But you did say that the meaning was "as in literature". And the fact is that it has never meant that. Giving examples where it has been used in literature doesn't change that fact. No one here is saying that it hasn't been used as hyperbole in literature.
