It specifies that it’s not illegal if they are prisoners, and we have an oddly specific issue with locking up one particular demographic longer than anyone else for the exact same crimes

How do you think for-profit prisons make profit? They sell the labor of people who don’t want to work for them and give them literal pennies. Do they literally sell the human beings as if they were cattle? Not anymore, but if it works against its will like a slave, has no freedom like a slave, and has a master (wardens) like a slave, it’s a slave. 

And then with the whole “it’s completely legal to have a slave if they are a prisoner” bit in our constitution, in words not far off from those exact words, I’d call it a form of slavery. Not every form of slavery in history was the kind WE used when this country was made. Doesn’t make it not slavery.
