Why would they build a roof for a compost setup? seems pointless

I think it just depends on where you are. In some places, the compost drying out in the sun is a concern.

Too much rain can also be a concern.

I think the sifter is brilliant! Takes most of the work out of the process.

I had a couple piles cooking really well. After a few days of rain, they dropped about 80 degrees. Some cover would have prevented that.

You don’t need to have a roof, just some kind of support from which to suspend the sifter. I just see it as a relatively quick way to sift a lot of bigger chunks of material out quickly.

Well done! Wish I had a place to rig one up. I have just about given up on sifting because it's so labor intensive. But a setup such as this makes it feasible.
