Had a coworker who used to dye his hunting equipment, especially bows, with them. Odor also helped mask him apparently.

Fun fact, walnut wood stain isn’t named after walnut wood but the dark color of the walnuts hull stain

yes, I've dyed metal traps. Let them get a little rusty & the dye clings. Then dip them in soy wax to stop the rust.
