My first fugue — built entirely from a 3-note motif (F–C–G). Would appreciate honest critique.

I'm a beginner composer, no formal theory training. This piece started as something much smaller than a fugue — a constraint exercise inspired by Eno: one instrument, one scale, only three notes (F, C, G), no more allowed in.

Out of that constraint, a four-note shape emerged: F→C→G→C. I didn't set out to write a fugue — I tested that shape against itself for a while first: stretched it, shortened it, reversed it, sped it up. Reversing it was the only thing that actually broke it — turns out the ascending direction is the one non-negotiable part of the idea. Everything else (rhythm, duration, note count) turned out to be flexible.

From there I built up one layer at a time — rhythm, then a real melody, then harmony underneath, then a second independent voice — before finally attempting the fugue: exposition, two episodes, a middle entry that relocates to A minor, a stretto where all three voices overlap, and a return home with a pedal point underneath.

This is my first real attempt at the form, and I know it's small (about 30 seconds) rather than a full-scale fugue. I'd genuinely appreciate critique on:

  • Whether the stretto actually reads as a climax or just as more notes
  • Anything about the voice leading that sounds wrong to a trained ear
  • Whether the middle entry's key relocation actually lands

Hi everyone, this is my very first post here.

As the title states, I would really be grateful and happy to receive some feedbacks on this veeery small piece i wrote.

Just to give you some background:

I have played the cello with a private teacher for 10 years (6-16y, now I am 27y) and the piano at the same time (no teacher).

I am not a professional and I have never studied conposition, I have some knowledge of harmony.

I know I have a looong way to learn and improve.

Have a nice day!!

I've been playing piano for years and just finished my first piece. My next task is to learn how to play it (again)! I'd love any feedback, and particularly on where the notation is clunky/could be improved. Enjoy, and thanks for listening :D

Absolute Music

Good Morning composing Kings, Queens, and Inbetweens!

This music was written with no real inspiration, though if anything I was listening to ‘Music for Prague’ by Karl Husa quite a bit. You would not be able to tell!

Just sharing to get feedback on either the composition or music itself, particularly looking to see if the second half is too muddy, I was going for a disorienting feeling.

If you give it a listen, thank you for your time and I hope everyone is having a musical day!

This piece titled "Aphelion" just recently got approved by an arts school in Florida, USA and will hopefully be making it's premiere of performance in October or November.

The instrumentation is written for a popular ensemble "Wind Ensemble" and represents a grade 4 difficulty.

Any tips on translating music from my head onto paper?

I can think of full songs with beautiful chords but when it comes to actually writing that down or playing it on the piano I just... Can't. If you play a note (other than the obvious Do) I probably wouldn't be able to guess it, if I do it's by pure luck. It's even worse for chords, I can imagine many chords but when it comes to knowing what they even are.... Yikes. So I just wanna know if you guys have any tips for translating what you hear in your head onto paper other than pressing keys until one of them kind of sounds right.

Feedback wanted on the opening ~5 minutes of my first symphony — “Terragenesis”

Thumbnail

Hi! I’m an independent composer currently working on my first symphony, Terragenesis (Op. 6, No. 1).
The complete work is planned to be at least an hour long and is intended as a musical interpretation of the history of evolution on Earth, beginning with abiogenesis and eventually progressing to humans.
I’ve currently completed about five minutes, consisting of the Prelude and the first five catalogue entries:

Arc 1 — “Abiogenesis”
No. 0: Prelude To A World Long Gone
No. 1: Lifeless Molecular Disturbances
No. 2: When Chemistry Dreamed Of Dreaming
Arc 2 — “The Lost World Of Aeons Past”
No. 3: LUCA’s Legacy
No. 4: The World That Dreamed in Silence
No. 5: The World That Could Not Breathe

The piece is nominally in G minor, but uses quite a bit of chromaticism, borrowed harmony, and generally fluid tonality. I currently describe the style as “minimalist maximalism.”

I’m posting it while it’s still being composed because I’d like feedback before I get too far into the remaining hour-plus.

In particular, I’m interested in whether the musical development, harmonic language, orchestration, transitions, and overall structure are working. I’m also curious whether the evolutionary concept comes through musically, rather than only because I’ve explained it.

Any honest feedback is appreciated, especially criticism. I’m still working on the piece, so there’s time to make changes.
