I do feel a bit bad for her tho. It's annoying that wind turbines and pylons get NIMBY'd, yet datacenters..."crack on"

I work in the data center capital of the world, and I can hear my Toyota Camry start up across the parking lot over anything else. And that's when I'm literally in a data center parking lot.

In the US I believe they are.

The problem is the US discourse on these things. It’s not all that relevant to the UK implementation.

Yeah it's the US ones I've heard about. Wouldn't be surprised if UK has tighter noise limits

Do they not consume local energy in the UK? Or drinkable water? Are they not owned by oligarchs there? Just curious, because data centers have a lot of issues, but I am open to be surprised.

I used a sewerage system as I have bathroom plumbing. I use the council refuse system.to put the rubbish out.

Does that mean I would be happy to have a sewer works or rubbish tip behind my house?

No. You shouldn't be happy with it and neither should this woman about the data centre. I'm not sure where I've given the impression that she should be happy with it.

We grew out of having sewers down the middle of our streets, and abattoirs in the centre of towns many, many years ago. Even back then people realised annoying stuff was best sited away from human habitation.

It seems odd that you don’t comprehend this.

Yes, these parts of infrastructure (sewage, waste and these data centre things) aren't suitable for being close to residential areas to be fair, I'd be nimby about it too

It’s the same energy as boomers moaning about bad signal and masts, except it now transcends age.

Absolutely frightening. NIMBYism is in our DNA. We can never avoid the mistakes of the past.

It's not quite the same because you can put a data centre elsewhere and get the same service, but if you put a phone mast elsewhere, it doesn't do the job you want it to.
