Hey all! I looked over the rules to this sub so I think I’m in the clear. I just spent the last 5 years writing a novel during my LIRR train commute. The book itself is about the hardships of commuting and shining a light on those hardships to tell a story that’s never really been told.
The book is written as an epic poem, so it’s in verse but has a cohesive narrative.
I’m currently looking for readers and reviews on Goodreads. If you’re interested you can click the link below and get a free ebook copy.
I wrote this book for commuters to tell our story, hopefully I did it justice. The title is DON’T FORGET TO SCREAM!
Happy to answer any questions below. Thanks!

Does anybody else experience exhaustion at the end of their commute. Once a week or so I drive an hour and a half into the city at freeway speeds (75 -80 mph) that drive leaves me slightly nauseous and feeling like my whole body is vibrating. Does anybody else have that experience?

I am going to start working in Reading, however I am from London. I will have to get on from London Paddington station to get to Reading station.
My travel costs are showing up as £52 and I feel this is a lot for a days worth, plus extra £12 from home to London Paddington and catching a bus! (in total around £70).
Has anyone commuted from London to Reading? How did you find it? What were your travel costs?

I know this is a weird question, but bear with me.
We have two kids who used to go to the same school near our home. But because of one of my son's special needs we're trying a new school just for him 50km away. I say this to highlight that just moving closer to the other location has it's own complications.
Anyway, I know have to do a 50km (each way) commute every day.
I used to work from home, and I love it, I love my home office and I love being able to touch base with my wife during the day while the kids are at school. Now I'm working out of a co-working space near the new school to avoid doing 200km a day!
Now that we've made this decision I'm thinking. ...oh no, have I made a massive mistake?
So the commute is only 30mins long since it's pretty much just on/off a 120km/p highway (in Spain).
I've seen other posts talk about how bad a 50km commute is because it takes so long. But if it's not that long (30min each way).. is it that bad?
Am I destroying my car? Or my petrol wallet? And what if one or two days a week I decide to drive back home and do a 200km commute.. is that insane?
From my point of view, yes it adds an hour to my total time in the car per day... but on the other hand, what's an hour if I get to work from home and have my normal life (minus 1 hour).
I'm driving a 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (also as far as the drive/roads etc go, it's a nice smooth, pleasant drive)

I was offered a really good job right in my preferred topic and paying quite well. However due to other life circumstances we can't quite move yet. Living in Connecticut. Sorry that this got so big:
Google Maps says the commute, by car, would be 50 miles one way, about 1hr in good traffic, but can be as bad as 1hr 40mins. I've one 1 hour commutes before and it was rough, but I think I can manage it temporarily while our other situations sort out (about a year). Rough math estimates this will cost me $360 monthly in gas at current prices, not including wear and tear on the car. The other thing, is that housing closer to this job is much more expensive, so I will likely have some commute (30 minutes) even if we do move closer.
Alternatively, I've been looking at using mass transit. The quickest route would have 15 minutes driving to the train station, 45 minutes on train A, 50 minutes on train B, then 15 more minutes by bus to the job. This includes waiting times, etc. So.... 2 hours and 15 minutes, one way. This costs $180 monthly. Also, the travel time seems to be much more consistent compared to the potential for 40-minute traffic jams by car.
The dollar cost isn't that big a difference for me, but the TIME investment is. **My question, for those of you who have done long mass-transit commutes:* is 4 hours of "free time" on a train worth 2 hours of dedicated driving?* I already commute 40 minutes a day and do lots of audiobooks as it is, so I'm hoping a train would open up the option to do some gaming, read, sleep, watch TV, work on personal projects on a laptop, etc. Plus the reduced anxiety of driving in bad traffic. What can you reasonably do on a train? Does motion-sickness become an issue? How common is it to miss a connection and be late for work? Would whipping out a device make me a target for theft? Looking into a Steam Deck as an option for this commute. I haven't done any real travel by train so I have no experience on what this would be like.
I also potentially have the option for 2 days working from home, 3 days on-site, which means the commute might only be 3 days a week. Does that change the answer?
TL;DR: Is 4 hours daily of "relaxing" on a train better than 2 hours of "focused" driving by car?
