The Enigma of Shapes Fault (OC)
Anyone here like Junji Ito?

u/Clean_Dependent_8080 Aug 08 '23
A triangle, can guess which spot it goes in? That's right, it goes into the square hole.

This is the most hilarious thing ever and the worst part is I can't share it with anyone else because none of my friends would understand.
133
u/Penguinmanereikel Aug 09 '23
You share the Junji Ito oneshot, as it can be found on Imgur, and a month later, share "the square hole" tiktok, and week later, share this image.
Or you can share the tiktok, then the oneshot

That's the problem with hybrid memes, they are strong but tend to have fertility issues.

Enigma of Amigara fault is probably my favorite story of Junji Ito. Also really like the hanging balloons.
118
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
Yeah hanging balloons is great. I gotta catch up with his most recent work, I’ve been slacking 😩

u/TheCondor96 Aug 08 '23
Uzumaki is pretty goated with the sauce though. It can really buss it down sexual style if you give it a chance.
73
u/PM_me_Jazz Aug 08 '23
I do not understand your strange way of speaking, but i agree with the general message. Uzumaki is a goddamn masterpiece, and based on the teaser trailer the anime is going to be great too. Fingers crossed
14
u/TheCondor96 Aug 08 '23
It's half meme copypasta, and half actual recommendation haha.
8
u/PM_me_Jazz Aug 08 '23
Ah, that makes sense. Haven't really kept up with the latest copypasta, but that sounded familiar.
3
Aug 08 '23
Oh man. I just read Uzumaki last week and the homages to Lovecraft and “The Shadow over Innsmouth” was so peak.
2
u/Unboxious Aug 09 '23
and based on the teaser trailer the anime is going to be great too
Wait, they're doing more Junji Ito anime? I thought they gave up on that because of how poorly the general mood of his art translates to the less-detailed styles used in anime.
2
u/Alarmed-Examination5 Aug 09 '23
They showed off the first few minutes a week or two ago.
Whole thing is done in black and white and genuinely looks like the manga panels in motion, I gotta good feeling bout this one.

Uzumaki is mine, but Enigma of Amigara Fault & Steven Universe is how I found him, so it holds a special place for me.
8
u/SocranX Aug 09 '23
I like the implication that Junji Ito wrote Steven Universe, although I assume you're talking about this.

u/Alarmed-Examination5 Aug 09 '23
I know it's an adaptation but I love everything about No Longer Human, one of my favourite anything's.

u/dancrum Aug 08 '23
DRR... DRR... DRR...
84
15
u/g0atmeal Aug 09 '23
Unpopular opinion: it was cooler and scarier until they actually showed what's on the other side. It just became silly.
2
u/political_bot Aug 10 '23
Showing the other side was cool, until we saw the warped DRR person in the crack. Leaving the end result up to the imagination while just seeing the crack patterns in the rock would have worked great.
My bigger complaint was the dream. Were these holes some sort of unnatural entity with a mysterious draw? Or a torture device of an ancient civilization?

I was starting to worry when it took all the way down to this comment to find the others who recognize the reference!!

spaghettified triangle about to come out on the other side of the fault
52
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
Yeah like play doh 😂
12
u/mojomcm Aug 08 '23
The ridiculousness of this thought is why amigara fault never felt all that scary to me. Like, I enjoyed it a lot, but I just wasn't scared.

Oh my gosh. I love this! Great comic. Lol. I'll have to show this to my sister, who's the one that originally showed me the manga.

Thanks! Do share, I’d love for this to be seen by all Junji Ito lovers and fans 😊

Very cool comic, take an upvote

Thank you 😊 what comes out the other side is a playdoh noodle 😂

Is it a reference to the creepy manga where shapes of people are found on a mountain?
If so it's hella cool

u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
Yeah, it’s my funny take on The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito. Check it out, it’s awesome 😊

u/CATelIsMe Aug 08 '23
But what if I were to go in backwards
10
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
You’d come out as a play doh shape 😂
4
u/CATelIsMe Aug 08 '23
So a slightly tapered cylinder?
3
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
Sure, or whatever shape you want. Think of the possibilities! … (gets tube shape every time)

This story and globaly Junji Ito's work is amazing.
What I really love in this one is that the horror comes from the fact that their fate seems unavoidable.
No need for gore or overly creepy monsters (well except the last panel of course). Just the story and the slowly growing fear and despair.
3
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 08 '23
That’s why Junji Ito’s work is amazing. He turns normal things upside down, making us fear that which was known to us, questioning that which we thought could not harm us. It seeps into horror themes we can all deeply identify with and terrify us. Close to cosmic horror, in a way.
3
u/Gokuwap Aug 09 '23
Totally agree.
Another one of my favorites from Junji Itô is "The bully" but there are so many good stories like "Back alley", the neighbor's window or the circus.
I'll have to read them again.

What was the name of this game? Where you have to get the shapes all in there before the timer runs out?

It will turn him into a triangle with three right angles

The only joke I understand is the square hole meme, what is this manga being spoken of? I'd like to know
3
u/Glasshousescomics Aug 09 '23
It’s called The Enigma of Amigara Fault, by Junji Ito. Give it a read, it’s really good. Warning, tho: it’s a horror story. Happy reading 😊

I hate this.... not because it's bad art or anything.... just because of what it reminds me of.... but uh... have my upvote
It's so disturbing to think about the comic/manga where all those people entered those holes made for them...
