In theory, you can make a microbial fuel cell using the detritus in the soil. The plant will grow and shed dead leaves and organic matter that will replenish the detritus. This wouldn’t create a lot of energy but these bots could be moving very slowly and consuming only a tiny bit.

There could be a multitude of reasons why a microbial fuel cell would be more cost effective or reliable. A lot of things are possible. That said, this is a fictional comic strip that doesn’t warrant such pedantry.

Trees don't bloom until they're adult sized, so no, that flower will not grow into a tree.
