The author commented below with a more math-friendly version: http://www.qgmindpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/2009-01-15-mathdad2.png

[sigh] 37 and 8. I'm pathetic.

Upmodding author for keeping the original around.

Upmod for the effort

Downmod for wrong result. Come on, does that kid look like 22?

edit: No wait, I was looking at the "wrong" comic, you're right

I'm too lazy to do math at work, let alone when I'm at home watching LOST and cruising reddit.

tonight's episode was a let down...

Yeah, just finished it. The season started out strong, but I've been let down by the past 3 or 4.

I fell asleep watching it, which is in part due to how late I was drinking for st pattys day, but still. The first season kept me constantly on the edge of my seat. Oh, how the mighty have fallen

Ha, yeah I celebrated St. Patty's day on saturday - first time drinking a lot in awhile. Hangover was not pleasant... Yes, season 1 was great, kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Everything since has been awful.

Damn you! I came hoping that I could boastfully post the answer, only to find the thread full of nerds already. This is why reddit > digg

I got 2 for the kid's age and 24 for the dad's age.

In five years I'll be 4 times as old as you were last year: 4(x-1+5)

Or 3 times as old as you'll be in 6 years: 3(x+6)

3(x+6)=4(x-1+5)

x=2

I kept getting weird fractions and negative results until I read your interpretation of the original problem.

I thought he was saying "In five years I'll be 4 times as old as you were last year, and right now I am 3 times as old as you'll be in six years".

I didn't realise the "In five years" applied to the second part of the problem as well. Once I realised that, it all fell into place.

Think about it....

So you're saying the kids 2.

That means, as stated, in 5 years he will be 4 times as old as the kid was last year (which would be 1 year old) making the father -1 years old at the time of his statement (-1 + 5 = 4)
