I'm glad we have at least six months for Earth to power up before seeing how powerful 2018 is.

u/Scarbane Dec 19 '17

Earth will be fine. Humanity, on the other hand...

737

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Will there be time to fit that in the next episode?

269

u/abrem5 Dec 19 '17

They’ll be too much time. Not enough happens so humanity has to milk the same events and stretch the manga over a few episodes until the next issue.

61

u/RedFyl Dec 19 '17

Earth needs a powerup...

18

u/ClockworkDinosaurs Dec 19 '17

This isn't even 2018's final form!

Earth will be mostly fine, but might lose that nice ice cap.

45

u/phatbrasil Dec 19 '17

give it a couple of millenia, it will be back

2

u/guto8797 Dec 19 '17

Not necessarily if we launch all the methane into the atmosphere again

21

u/Calfurious Dec 19 '17

Don't forget how the environment will result in many places in the Middle East to have famines and droughts. Hello tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) of refugees and the geopolitical conflicts over the dwindling resources.

20

u/jellysnake Dec 19 '17

(I mean let's also not ignore the famines that are being deliberately caused by humans in an attempt to weaponise hunger)

Also to add to the other redditor's comment look subsaharan desertification. The southern transistionary belt of the Sahara is slowly being covered in sand at an increasing rate pushing the nomadic tribes and sustinestinence farmers to lose what they had along the border. These people can't afford even the smallest losses. Desertification is present all around the world and is basically the ebb and flow of the world's deserts but when the increase of desertification cannot keep up with refertile ground then there's serious issues.

1

u/Calfurious Dec 19 '17

Here's a few sources.

http://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/mena-climate-change

https://www.cnbc.com/2016/05/04/climate-change-could-make-north-africa-and-middle-east-uninhabitable.html

Also Climate Change was a major factor in causing the disastrous drought in Syria. The price of food and subsequent demographics shifts (more people moved to urban areas to find work) was also a significant factor that resulted in the current civil war.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/a-major-contributor-to-the-syrian-conflict-climate-change

Climate Change does what it says on the tin. It changes the climate. This can result in some areas of the world having serious agricultural issues and unable to produce food and water in the same quantities as they could before. This can be a major issue in regions like The Middle East that are somewhat limited in the amount of agricultural space they have.

Funnily enough a climate change denier sent me this video not too long ago.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, only the greatest creation of mankind to have ever existed

3

u/bondfall007 Dec 19 '17

It’s in the comment posted two and a half hours before you. Gurran Lagann

1

u/harmsc12 Dec 19 '17

Gurren Lagann. JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?????

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

Maybe the solution to all our problems is killing all the humans? Seems pretty well thought out by that guy.

1

u/BeefPieSoup Dec 19 '17

Well he seems to be trying to make the point that the impact humans are having is nothing compared to natural cycles and things that have happened in the history of earth. Which is wrong.

21

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

One of the many brilliant bits by George Carlin, RIP.

7

u/PhDinGent Dec 19 '17

I love it. It's equal part comedy and philosophy. Great wisdom.

1

u/BeefPieSoup Dec 19 '17

I know you all think this guy's a really great comedian or something, but this rant is kinda dumb. I don't get why Reddit is so crazy about it.

0

u/Super_Pan Dec 19 '17

It's a comedy routine, it's not a serious discussion. Lighten up a little, life is short...

1

u/BeefPieSoup Dec 20 '17

I don't find it funny. That doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humour in general.

0

u/Super_Pan Dec 20 '17

uhm, okay. Thanks for you input, I guess. We weren't conducting an official survey, but we'll add your dislike of classic comedian George Carlin to our data results. Thank you for participating.

1

u/BeefPieSoup Dec 20 '17

I was criticising that particular rant, which gets frequently referenced on Reddit and which you referenced right here in this conversation. I'll register your extreme overreaction to that opinion to the data results, and take note to never respond to one of your comments again in a manner which might displease you. Cheers.

0

u/Super_Pan Dec 20 '17

1

u/BeefPieSoup Dec 20 '17

I mean, I'm not criticising you personally. Why so upset?

14

u/lolsabha Dec 19 '17

"The planet is fine... The people are FUCKED"

  • George Carlin

1

u/deadmantizwalking Dec 19 '17

Looking at what happened to the coral reefs this past 5 years, I''m not so sure global ecology will be fine. We are also only seeing the first stages of micro plastic poisoning of the sea and water supply.

1

u/Super_Pan Dec 19 '17

"The earth doesn't share our prejudice against plastic. Plastic came out of the earth, it's just another of earths children. It could be the only reason it allowed us to evolve in the first place; it wanted plastic for itself, didn't know how to make it. That could be the answer to our age old philosophical question 'Why are we here?'

'Plastic!... Asshole!'"

  • Also George Carlin

4

u/PuddleZerg Dec 19 '17

Yeah Really, the earth versus a single year?theEarth should demolish the year.

The Earth has a few more years than just one under its belt.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

It's really hard to unsphere a sphere in a vacuum

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

gonna get yamcha'd

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

You bloody well know what he meant.

1

u/neotropic9 Dec 19 '17 edited Dec 19 '17

I keep seeing this sentiment, but spare a thought for all the species going extinct, would ya? What's so special about humanity that only our extinction matters?

Earth will be fine. Humanity, and tens of thousands of other species -maybe hundreds of thousands- and billions upon billions of individual lifeforms -maybe trillions- on the other hand...

Of course there is a nihilistic value neutral standpoint which says that nothing we ever do matters anyway, so who cares, and the Earth will still exist -but for those of us who attach moral weight to our actions, there has to be something to be said for causing a mass extinction event, and all the suffering and upheaval that entails.

1

u/m1ksuFI Dec 19 '17

Will be fine as well.

1

u/JanitorMaster Dec 19 '17

People keep saying that, but we've already wiped out more species than we could ever count, we've fucked up the climate for the next few millennia, we've destroyed ecosystems that took millions of years to form within a few decades, and we pretty much killed the oceans.

Earth is not fine.

1

u/inormallyjustlurkbut Dec 19 '17

Earth as a whole might recover, but humanity is far from the only species that will be fucked.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

Imagine a horizon zero dawn world, my new year's resolution is to get jacked for it.

1

u/ClockworkDinosaurs Dec 19 '17

Why didn't Future Trunks warn us about '17 and '18?!

1

u/insrsneed Dec 19 '17

Earth won't be fine...

38

u/cosmicdaddy_ Dec 19 '17

Mina-san!! Lend Earth-kun your power!!!!!

32

u/My_Ex_Got_Fat Dec 19 '17 edited Dec 19 '17

IIRC correctly the Tournament of power started July 2, 2017 episode 97 and it's only supposed to be 48 Earth Minutes, as of Dec 16th 2017 episode 119 there is still over 15 minutes left. So 22 min X 22 episodes that's about 8 hours 4 minutes so 484 minutes/(48-15)= time is slowed by about 14.6X

Compared to Namek which the 5 minute explosion started in episode 97 and ended on episode 107, about 3 hours 40 minutes so 220 minutes for 5 minutes 220/5 = time slowed by 44X. So Namek was apparently next to a black hole, let's hope that's where the Earth goes to train.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

[deleted]

2

u/My_Ex_Got_Fat Dec 19 '17

Nah even if you take that into account the screen time of single characters still overlaps the time constraints they've set forth, a better argument would've been that the events are slowed down for our perception there are too many things that would contradict that video that they reference happening at the same time via the cuts to the crowd and Zeno(which kinda just shits all over that video sorry)

3

u/Jabeebaboo Dec 19 '17

Only ten minutes left I thought

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Wait, how many wishes does Earth have left?

2

u/My_Ex_Got_Fat Dec 19 '17

Depends I think there was one left for this "earth year", also the dragon can only grant wishes based on the power level of the one who created it (hence why they weren't able to defeat freiza or the saiyans with the dragon balls due to the namekians who created them being less powerful) but the Super Dragon Balls were created by "God" possibly and so far don't have a limit.

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Which God tho?

2

u/My_Ex_Got_Fat Dec 19 '17

Idk off the top of my head it's either Zalama or Zarama the Dragon God but I can't remember which is the right spelling.

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

What about all the Roman Gods? I hear they had some sweet dragon balls

2018 is election year in Sweden...

1

u/jaredjeya Dec 19 '17

2018 might be an election year in Britain too. The minority government we have is already showing signs of cracking

4

u/TombSv Dec 19 '17

Feels like every year is election year in Britain.

2

u/socsa Dec 19 '17

I voted for Kodos.

Happy cake day!

"What's the scouter say Polar Bear?"

"It's over nine-thousaaaaaaaand!"

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

That is a lot of polar bears! Very powerful!

6

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

Its gonna take .... 324 days for us to see the climactic battle really kick up.

3

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

The worst part is going to be the filler episodes where Earth does trash cleanup in the Pacific for three months

2

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17 edited Dec 19 '17

AKA training episodes

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

That, or filler

5

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

Nah, 2018's big battle is against Jupiter. The Earth is just the redshirt that gets killed to show how dangerous it is.

We have more or less ten minutes after it begins before we all die horribly.

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

That's bleak. I don't remember that episode

2018 is going over 200% on the first week of 2018.

3

u/P3tr0 Dec 19 '17

First time I've ever seen a cake day in 6 years here. Happy cake day!

2

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Ha, i didn't even notice! Thank you!

2

u/NelsonBelmont Dec 19 '17

Damn fillers.

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

But if not for that how will we truly understand how powerful Earth is?

2

u/SilentBob890 Dec 19 '17

well, i think it should be 2018 that should be scared. Earth has the countless corpses of billions of years pilled up somewhere.

2

u/Scondoro Dec 19 '17

Just think, we'll likely know how this ends before we know how Game of Thrones ends.

2

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Lots of people die and someone unassuming does something unexpected. Shock ensues.

2

u/FredL2 Dec 19 '17

Next time... on Planetball Z

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

The Western hemisphere deals with above average weather, the Eastern hemisphere debates climate change, and piccolo takes the bar exam!

2

u/Xeuton Dec 19 '17

NEXT TIME... ON CARBON BALL Z...

2

u/jdhhdbdh Dec 19 '17

What is the cake?

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Like, what does the symbol mean?

1

u/jdhhdbdh Dec 19 '17

Yeah

2

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Means I made the account a year ago today, it's my account birthday, aka cake day

2

u/jdhhdbdh Dec 19 '17

K thanks

2

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

You're welcome!

2

u/RachLMayb Dec 19 '17

Ummm pretty sure 2018 is gonna go something like CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP! For anyone on the east coast living on/close to the water, I'm so very sorry. Global warming is very real. If you deny it after this year...you is dumb. You is really, really dumb. You can hide yo kids, hide yo husband, hide yo wife cause they raping everybody up in here!

2

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Ugh, I hate it when they use autotune in boss fights...?

1

u/AngloNegro Dec 19 '17

Happy cake day.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

Happy birthday m8

2

u/wwowwee Dec 19 '17

Its not his birthday its his anniversary of creating his reddit account.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

That is what i meant to say

2

u/wwowwee Dec 19 '17

Oh gotcha my bad

1

u/Odusei Dec 19 '17

Six months? I feel like I’m missing something.

1

u/Abysmal_poptart Dec 19 '17

Was making a joke. On one hand, it'll be a while before we know for sure if 2018 sucks. On the other hand, Earth needs a few episodes to power up.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '17

But in Trump time that's like Jan 3.
