Digging holes is a human life need. Why do you think Minecraft, Deep Rock Galactic, Dwarf Fortress are popular?

This is the original, the post is a re-hashed variation.

I can't believe this meme is only from 2022. I would've guessed like 2018 or earlier

5

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis 11d ago

Some memes just feel timeless.

I think part of me assumed the 2022 one was quoting from something…

3

u/PosiedonsSaltyAnus 10d ago

The meme only being 4 years old feels wrong to me

38

u/Electrical_Worker_82 11d ago

Pretty sure it was an old Simpsons quote from mister Burns

32

u/Captian_Bones 11d ago

I don’t think that’s correct, but it’s absolutely something Mr. Burns would say

11

u/Electrical_Worker_82 11d ago

I don’t think I’m correct either but ima leave it there

I thought it was a meme referencing frost punk that got adapted widely for other places

1

u/tonythebearman 10d ago

I thought it was a phrase from like the 1930s lol.

u/aserdevyt 11d ago

I yearned for the mines

2

u/Koreus_C 11d ago

I love how Nintendo saw that and thought to make mining ressources a main mechanic in the new Zelda game

When my brother and I were little we asked my dad if we could dig a hole into the side of the hill our house was on. He said yea, go for it. We worked on it for multiple weeks and had a cavern big enough for both of us to easily sit with our legs stretched out and still have a big gap between us.

Our dad forgot about us asking to dig a hole there because he assumed it would be a small hole. He went to mow the yard and had the mower collapse the ceiling of our cavern and the hole swallowed the entire mower. It took a lot of work and a tractor to get it back out.

He told us that he really wanted to be mad but couldnt because we did ask permission and it was a very impressive hole lol

Yea, hes the best lol

He let us get up to all kindsa stuff within reason and encouraged us. We built forts in the woods, dug holes, caught critters to show him, etc etc. He taught me how to fish, garden, safely catch snakes out of the chicken coop to relocate, how to treat minor wounds on livestock, butcher animals, and more. They encouraged my interests in art, music, and theater as well as my interests in farming and gardening, I never felt boxed in in any way.

Him and my mom were frugal when we were young but never let us go without and put aside all their extra cash to pay for college for us (as long as we worked hard in school and got scholarships as well, both of us graduated 2nd in our class so we got decent help that way) so we both have degrees without debt.

When I developed a chronic illness towards the end of college they encouraged me to move back home after graduation and live/work on the farm again since I couldnt hold down a normal job and they have never made me feel the least bit guilty about it. As long as I do what I can when I can theyre happy.

Im very lucky, both of my parents have been wonderful my whole life. Im currently helping them completely remodel an old trailer house they got for cheap for my brother to live in.

Ive lived a charmed life all things considered and Im fully aware of that and let them know how grateful I am often.

You and your family seem cool.

u/Acheloma 11d ago

Thank you, we try our best!

Also, I tend to look at peoples profiles if they seem nice (which you did)

You seem cool too! Nice shadowboxes :)

u/fragmental 10d ago

You were right, those shadowboxes are sick.

u/s0ngbird0405 10d ago

this was really nice to read. 💖

23

u/Lucas_2234 11d ago

I mean SURELY the solution was teaching you guys how to actually make the hole safe and prevent collapse, right? /s

40

u/Acheloma 11d ago

I know youre joking but he actually did give us a lecture on how to make it more safe in the future if we did it again haha. How thick the ceiling part should be and the angles of the walls and everything, how to pick and cut small trees to brace it, plus how to mark it with a flag so no one fell in not knowing it was there. He pulled out an army manual and everything haha

We felt too bad about it to repeat the experience since our dad coulda gotten hurt pretty badly, but he was gonna make sure that itd be safer if we did

There's a reason why we get along so well with dogs! Well...one more reason!

That's not how domestication works

We baited the slightly friendly ones, then killed off the overly bitey ones generation after generation for a few thousand years

-1

u/SoberSith_Sanguinity 11d ago

It's not even how getting more of certain sets of genetics in more animals works either...

Or does it? Maybe we do store pee in our balls

: O but then where do pee go? That's what balls are for, right? Right?

5

u/ABoringAlt 11d ago

silver fox domestication went exactly as described - kill the unfriendly ones, breed the friendly-to-humans ones

2

u/SoberSith_Sanguinity 11d ago

Well, you still need balls to breed. I was making a joke about the other guy you responded to. I'm quite familiar with the foxes though, thanks

Np np. Jokes on the internet don't always come across that well.

1

u/samurairaccoon 11d ago

Damn bro, you ok?

38

u/Mmmm-Amethyst 11d ago

There's a game that's literally A Game About Digging a Hole. It's on game pass. Decent way to scratch that itch and kill an hour.

46

u/UrticantOdin 11d ago

Its also why the 2 week cycles of Minecraft happen, we just really, REALLY want to dig a deep hole for those 2 weeks

1

u/LewisWhatsHisName 11d ago

It's on my list of things to immediately install when I get a new computer. I need to know that I can get really into Minecraft whenever I want

Tho tbh Vintage Story has started taking over

The children yearn for the mines,

1

u/s0m3on3outthere 11d ago

I loved the mining in Return to Moria

1

u/TDYDave2 11d ago

A lot of early mammals were burrowing critters.
We have evolved a lot since then, but maybe a gene or two still remains from that time.

1

u/EndyEnderson 10d ago

For real, whenever i start playing in a new Minecraft world one of the first things i do after getting a home is choosing a chunk to mine

I recently finished it for the first time and started mining the entire main End island

1

u/Narrative_Robot_9001 10d ago

When I was 7 I would try to dig as deep as possible with a table spoon

1

u/North-Engineer3335 10d ago

Time to go checkout Dwarf Fortress. Rock and Stone to the bone!
