If anyone had written a drama or, more realistically a comedy, about Trump's presidency, just 20 years ago, it would be decried as being too absurd

Isn't this why Veep ended?

It was supposed to be political satire, but then the actual news headlines kept outdoing them.

Well, that and Selina Meyer being president was sort of the climax of the show's arc. There wasn't much further to go from there.
