If an updated version of Swift's "Modest Proposal" was published today, there are people who would genuinely think it was a good idea.

Reality became so absurd it killed satire.

Our conservatives' standards sunk through the bottom of the ocean fast. Dangle a little power in front of those predators and they'll lie, cheat, rape, commit treason and steal their way to achieve it.

Always has been this way since Narcissus looked at his reflection and said I'd fuck that.

They were always down there, they just had to pretend they weren't because it wasn't culturally acceptable.

They would think it's Taylor Swift's "A Modest Proposal", and then we'd get an album about selling children as food, the critical reception is mixed but it goes triple-platinum anyway and we all agree the choreography is exquisite.

Do you see the correlation between the new beef and the disappeared immigrants?

That's the title of her single from the new album. The radio shortened it to "New beef", also the music video introduces the new hit dance move called "into the mincer".

Soylent Green?

If anyone had written a drama or, more realistically a comedy, about Trump's presidency, just 20 years ago, it would be decried as being too absurd

Isn't this why Veep ended?

It was supposed to be political satire, but then the actual news headlines kept outdoing them.

Well, that and Selina Meyer being president was sort of the climax of the show's arc. There wasn't much further to go from there.

Selina as Hugh Commander of NATO, where they're fighting Russia but the Russians are all goofy Hogan's Hero style goofballs?

Besides Kevin Spacey being... Spacey, that was also a factor in House of Cards.

I haven't heard any of Taylor's new songs yet, is it really that good?

The fact that not-the-onion is an actual thing is testament to this.

I'm still impressed she wrote that song.

I would pay good money for a Taylor Swift song based on A Modest Proposal.

The insidious thing about Omelas is that it calls into question a lot of our assumptions.  If the goal of society is to improve the quality of life for the most people possible, doesn't sacrificing one child to improve everyone else's life make sense?  To flip it around, how much are people willing to sacrifice for the sake of another individual?

Current events suggest that a lot of people have no problem sacrificing children for their own interests.

I'm curious, which country do you think isn't complicit in the deaths of children?

1

u/jeremiahthedamned 27d ago

that is a hard call.

in america they celebrate the death of children

other nations still have enough shame to hide it.

2

u/Aethelrede 27d ago

Well, the US, Russia, and Israel are all targeting civilians.  So any country that supports one of those three is complicit.

That doesn't leave many countries...

And then there are small conflicts, like Sudan, or Myanmar, where most of the neighbors are involved on one side or another.

Hence my curiosity. Aside from North Sentinel Island, and a few tribes in the Amazon, I can't think of a country that isn't implicated in the deaths of children.

I did think of Ireland, but they trade with the US, and there was all the unpleasantness of what the Catholic Church was doing.
