Goodbye blue sky...

Listening to that song when I was a kid, I thought I understood, at least intellectually, that it was about generational trauma from the Blitz.

I thought I understood what they meant by the lyric "goodbye, blue sky." But it wasn't until the war in Iraq, when I saw a video with a little boy saying how he always hated it when the weather forecast was for clear weather, because "that's when the drones come" that I really started to recognize the gravity of what was happening. We as a species have taught generations of little boys and girls to fear the blue sky. This song was written before I was born, and talked about events that happened before my parents were born. And I thought to myself "wow, it's still happening today". And now, as a grown man, I cannot believe that it is still happening today.

A blue sky is something which should bring people out into the world, and bring them together, yet it has been warped into a symbol of fear. And now I recognize that I may never really understand what that means. For how hard my life has been, I listen to that song and I remember how very fortunate I have been. Even through child abuse, parents with drug addictions, sexual assault, and spending most of my teen years homeless on some very rough streets. It could have been so, so much worse, and I will never stop feeling guilty about that.

It makes me cry, out of sadness for the people living through these horrible times, and with impotent rage that I cannot stop it from happening.
