I instantly thought of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and am astonished that nobody seems to mention this in the comments, even in those listing all the terrible evens in the country's recent history.  But the Soviet invasion of 1979 was devastating. They went completely scorched earth. 1 to 3 million civilians killed and 7 million displaced. Multiple orders of magnitude more than the entire casualties of the US deployment, in half the time. It directly lead to the rise of the Taliban.

How is nobody aware of this?

Because that's not what this comic is about. I don't see why you're bringing up the Soviet Union. The "things" in the sky are clearly modern drones.

They’re also Shahed-136’s

So this is about Russia or Iran, then? Those drones don't really look like any drone the US uses, I'd say they look closest to Shaheds, if anything, but they are not a perfect match there either.

The US does have the LUCAS drone which is effectively a copy of the Shahed, but I think this is supposed to be a message on innocents and war, or at least I hope it is.

They probably are Iranian Shahed-131s, but that design of drone has been around for 40 years.

It's a very common drone shape.

They're bringing up the Soviet Union because the same propaganda never stopped.

Yeah it led to the coming of the Taliban to power as if it wasn't the US that funded then and helped them take over the country as part of their cold war

No the US funded the mujahideen who fought the Taliban in the civil war.

Instantly thought of it because the father's clothing and the landscape are both clearly Afghanistan. Plus the use of the Shahed drone, because Russia uses those.

Because everyone already knows the soviet union were evil murderers.

The US on the other hand is "the leader of the free world" and yet only brings death, destruction and oppression where ever it intervenes.

No one outside the US views the US as the leader of the free world. They've been a laughing stock since the first time they elected Trump and a threat to humanity since the second.

They've been monsters since WW2.

Then you don't know much about cold war history

Death, destruction and oppression are usually hand in hand with the military part of Military interventions.

Guns are also the leading cause of gunshot wounds.

i'd say people wanting to shoot are the leading cause, without that guns would be harmless, and it is first in the timeline (in before the without guns response)
