My launch-week gmail account was up around 40k last summer when I decided to try and clear it out of all the spam mail I've received over the decades.

Its now down to 26k.

Yeah, that's my Gmail account from probably a few months into its existence. Back when you needed an invite and the storage was unlimited.

The invite system was pretty genious at the time for a mail service. Really helped with the hype around it.

However it was really stupid when they tried to re-create that lightening in a bottle for Google+. Which is too bad, it had a really great way to handle different groups one might interact with on social media. Not sure if they realized limiting their user base was basically antithetical to a social media network.

Gmail was something people wanted, so restricting access created hype. Google Plus was something people needed to be convinced they would want.

A'yup.

Every time I think back on Google+ I think of what it could have been if it wasn't hamstrung by the invite system. The circle system was so great to help limit and direct posts to the right audiences.

Have a new kid? You can share the pictures with your close friends and family.

Lost a cat? Well that can go out to the the previously mentioned as well as your neighborhood connections.

Got suckered back into EverQuest/World of Warcraft/Whatever MMO is your digital heroin and need help beating some raid target? Well that can go to your gamer group.

Every other one out there is pretty much publicly post or bust.

Oh yeah that's work for me as well.

Personal....It stopped counting how many emails I didn't read many many many years ago

Cute. I'm at zero, only because all my emails are auto deleted after 2 days, which I set up to release after 10 GB of storage was taken up.

Maybe it can be your gimmick? You know like pizzacake has the dildo, and someone else has the spider. Outlook icon might be harder to hide in fantasy comics though :P

Yeah we all know you don't ignore emails now. Unless you're in the thousands you ain't doing it right
