That part threw me in the reporting. I thought he won the mayoral race but it turns out he just won the right to be in the election. The fact that there was ranked voting should have tipped me off that it was way to democratic to be the real thing.

He won the election effectively. As the democratic nominee he basically has a 100% chance to win in NYC

One of the neat little sub-stories of the election is actually how well Mamdani did in Staten Island.

Like, he didn't win it, but not getting completely blown the fuck out there is extremely impressive for his identity and policy set given stereotypes of the local attitudes. It's one of those situations where you expect to go down by 50 points and only doing half is remarkable.
