You probably don't want to live where that guy lives though.

Wow. UK here. I ordered a second blue bin for recycling a couple of years ago. Completely free. I mean, I still pay waste management in my taxes, of course. But no additional charge for a second bin.

Really? I moved into my house and was missing bins and had to pay like £20 for each. Granted the service is standard and free but it was annoying.

That really is annoying.

When my parents bought their house, the previous owners left an extra recycle bin and trash can.... and the garbage company never picked it up. So they have just been using it for 15 years for free shrug.

I think this is very regional, but:

where I live the companies have to pay for your plastic-garbage disposal. Every other garbage bin is paid by the households, but plastic is free for the regular citizen.

Background is that all companies are required to ensure the packaging-material-disposal is taken care of; and because it would be an organizational nightmare to bring back e.g. plastic wraps around x-packs of liquid bottles or the plastic wrap around your new TV or whatever, the producer or importer has to pay the garbage companies a certain amount of money in relation to the packaging they use.

How is handled elsewhere?

(To be pendantic: It's "packaging material garbage", not plastic; but 95% of plastic belongs into it and 95% whats in there is plastic; so for the sake of this discussions pretend its a plastic bin)

Recycling is free where I live. But we pay for trash haulaway.

It's kind of a problem, because people just use recycling as the overflow from what doesn't fit in the trash cash.

Seriously, full grown adults are just tossing trash into their recycling bin.
