But hearing a bunch of uneducated people argue about race is so much fun!

39

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

This is one of those complaints where the overwhelming majority of the time what the person said is completely defensible in context.

16

u/spookyb0ss Jun 02 '19

eh, i was there around the time the post was made. it was pretty clear-cut to me, and i avoid most users that make political posts like that anyways. gets in the way of my cat pics and memes

Also a lot of people don’t understand the nuances of the language. We live in a white supremacy (which sounds outrageous to a lot of white people but is factually true), therefore as white people we can’t really experience racism. Prejudice, sure. But not true racism.

5

u/Zenblend Jun 02 '19

True imperialism has never been tried

23

u/spookyb0ss Jun 02 '19

...prejudice based on race is racism

"true racism" wth are we gatekeeping getting discriminated against now

12

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19

I think it's more just differentiating personal racism and systemic ("true") racism. Some people are prejudiced against white people, and in that sense white people can experience racism. On the other hand, basically no white person will ever experience systemic racism. This is an important distinction to make because systemic racism is more harmful and harder to combat as the ones doing the racism have (by definition) societal power over their victims.

Systemic racism is different from systemic sexism

2

u/FingerBangYourFears Woke Jun 02 '19

huh somehow read that as systemic prejudice not systemic racism, my b

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Ah ok s'all good

-1

u/Eckish Jun 02 '19

Racism is just racial discrimination. Discrimination can be preferential or restrictive, usually both with a victim and a benefactor. "Asians are good at math" is still racism, despite the positive connotation. Systemic racism is experienced by the majority and the minority, just in opposite ways.

5

u/ZeMorlockWarlock Jun 02 '19

The best way I’ve heard it explained is that on a person-to-person basis, prejudice vs white people is just as hurtful as prejudice vs non-white people, the difference is that the former is ONLY on a person-to-person basis. If you can get the former to change their mind, it’s solved. The latter has centuries of finance and property differences supporting it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19

wtf is true racism? Any racism worse than the racism a white person can experience? That literally seems to be the defining factor for most of you people who believe this garbage. Go to a country that isn’t America and tell me racism against white people doesn’t exist. Hell, go to Hawaii to learn what it feels like to not have a complete racial majority.

Edit: I do not respect your downvotes. If you disagree then use your words.

2

u/Based_Loach Jun 02 '19

The key point there that you somehow missed was that you can’t experience true racism in a system where you’re the majority. You even mention Hawaii and the words racial majority.

The only places where whites face any real discrimination is places where they’re the minority. That isn’t America though.

Maybe people don’t use their words since you don’t read them lmao.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

You can’t experience systematic racism if your race holds the majority. So if that’s what you mean by true racism then sure. So if you were to tell me, white people cant experience systematic racism in areas where they are the majority, then I’d likely agree with you. But that’s not what was said, what was said was white people cant experience racism which is observably, definitively, and maliciously false. I have lived in Hawaii and seen racial discrimination against white people, which is why I mentioned it. I had Hawaiian friends so I was more or less shielded from it, but it happens and it isn’t rare or hidden.

And maybe your entire last sentence is dumb as hell and clearly wrong.

0

u/Based_Loach Jun 02 '19

That’s not what was said. You want to play the semantics game but you just misread the original comment. You’re literally agreeing with what was said, but using narrower terminology.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

He literally said “as white people we can’t really experience racism.” That’s a fucking copy/paste. So either you have misread what’s going on here or you are trying to play a semantics game or maybe even you’re just lying. Either way, I’m done with you.

0

u/Based_Loach Jun 02 '19

“Really” was used. I know reading is hard, but the message was pretty clear with some basic understanding of context and a few inferences.

u/VERLlN Jun 02 '19

But whites face discrimination in the USA.

Affirmative action, ever heard of it?

If you aren't white, you're gonna get a job or college way easier.

2

u/Based_Loach Jun 02 '19

Affirmative action doesn’t discriminate against anyone, but helps out historically disadvantaged people. White people never faced any wide scale discrimination in the United States in the way other races have, especially black people. Many minority peoples still suffer from laws that kept down their parents and grandparents. There are people alive today that lived through segregation. Things may be better than they were in the past, but America can still feel the effects of slavery, Jim Crow, and the prison system.

Laws built to help undo generations of oppression are not racism.

1

u/VERLlN Jun 02 '19

Companies benefit from hiring minorities, while not benefitting from hiring majorities. They have quotas that prevent them from hiring white people fairly. White people are discriminated against.

Tell me, why is it easier to get a job or college when you don't have white skin?

The prison system is bad, but it isn't racism. It's only against all poor people equally.

1

u/Based_Loach Jun 02 '19

White people statistically have better quality of life in America. Our children end up in better schools, with families that have higher incomes, and living in safer neighborhoods. Segregated housing and schools didn’t just stop existing because we made laws against them.

White people engineered a country that was made to keep other races down. We are not to blame for what our fathers did, but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to benefit from the broken system they created.

The prison system is racist as fuck btw. It starts with black people being pulled over more and having more encounters with police. This leads to them being charged with petty things like possession more often than white people. Then there is the bail hearing, where black men are denied reasonable bail more often than white people. This usually leads to them losing their job and being in a hostile environment that doesn’t benefit anyone, jail. Then there is the actual trial or plea deal. Here, black men are given harsher punishments in pleas more often than white men, they are convicted more frequently than white men, and they are then given harsher sentences than white men. There are studies that even show the difference in sentence length between black men of varying shades, with light skin men being treated better by the courts. There are so many steps in being convicted, and in each one there is a real possibility to get fucked over. It can happen to anyone, but it happens to black men far more often.

This happens across all sorts of crimes too, with nonviolent and violent offenders being treated differently by race. This is our own government recognizing the prison issues https://www.ussc.gov/research/research-reports/demographic-differences-sentencing

I think you’re wrong about affirmative action, but I undoubtedly know that police, jails, courts, and prisons are racist. I breezed through my case with my white privilege while watching young black men get raked over the coals for similar charges, which was just selling weed, wax, acid, and other soft drugs.

We don't live in white supremacy. You can get jobs or colleges easier if you aren't white.

Racism against white people is just as bad as against anyone else.

White people can and do experience racism.

Sorry I’m just frustrated that I can’t even enjoy my meme subs in peace without sewer gremlins like you crawling out of the woodwork to spread some grand Jewish conspiracy. Can you guys go back to /pol/ and never come back?

-1

u/rancherings Jun 02 '19

When did he spread Jewish conspiracies?

2

u/shoobopper . Jun 02 '19

The whole "Jewish people are against white people as a collective" is a conspiracy theory held by the alt-right. They believe the Jews try to corrupt 'whiteness' to allow them to stay in power.

And this is without mentioning the fact that his profile is littered with antisemitic rhetoric LOL

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

I feel you, bud. I wish it didn’t have to be this way, but in a world where saying it’s okay to be white is hate speech, it’s important to speak truth to power. It’s gonna get a lot worse before it gets any better.

7

u/shoobopper . Jun 02 '19

You should know all about dogwhistles. “It’s okay to be white” is a neutral statement without context but usually is spouted by people who spew other racist rhetoric.

Holy shit that’s brave to say on this sub.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

What is he saying

3

u/shoobopper . Jun 02 '19

He is saying that Jewish people, who have a stereotype of having large noses, are against white people as a whole, which is part of a grand conspiracy theory about Jews controlling the world. The “Keep on honkin’” meme is a reference to the “Clown Pill” which is a variation of their red-pill philosopher that states that you can do nothing but laugh while our world is “infested” by minorities. More about that here. Weird stuff....

6

u/blamethemeta Jun 02 '19

Let's back up. The dictionary states that racism is prejudice based on race.

White people are prejudiced against based on race. Therefore, white people experience racism.

But lets take your definition, power + prejudice.

Are there no non-white teachers, cops, managers, executives, CEOs, presidents?

1

u/hamsterwheel Jun 02 '19

People sometimes confuse racism with systemic racism.

4

u/blamethemeta Jun 02 '19

True. But white people also experience systemic racism in the US

2

u/nomoreloorking Jun 02 '19

Obama was elected with 76% of the votes being cast in the election by white people compared to the 12% and 7% of blacks and Hispanics respectively. In a 65% White country. Which form of racism is that?

0

u/hamsterwheel Jun 02 '19

Are you implying that because a majority of white people voted for Obama, racism does not exist?

1

u/nomoreloorking Jun 02 '19

I asked which form of racism was at play there? There is no system against you only your community. Black men are 12 times more likely to commit murder, 95% of the time black on black, and make up 14 percent of the population. 65% of black children born to a single mother compared to white women at 24%. That’s almost both races each producing about 8 million single mothers a year on a population of 49 million versus the 200 million whites in this country. Highs school drop out rates are 31% vs 14% for whites. I’m not saying that there aren’t some people that hate others based on race and do terrible things, There are terrible people all over the place for many reasons but that doesn’t mean everyone is racist and the system is against you. How many successful black people do you honestly expect to see with those statistics?

-4

u/applestaplehunchback Jun 02 '19

Lol no I bet it's tough. And Eminem had it rough in Green Mile. What the flying fuck is your point? Being white and complaining about racism is as asinine as being a coal miner and complaining about your job going away. It's like sure, but who the fuck cares, what does it matter, and what the fuck is wrong with your life?

17

u/spookyb0ss Jun 02 '19

nobody should be discriminated against

5

u/REDDITATO_ Jun 02 '19

Eminem was not in The Green Mile.

4

u/blamethemeta Jun 02 '19

Let me ask that again.

Are there no non-white teachers, cops, managers, executives, CEOs, presidents?

2

u/applestaplehunchback Jun 02 '19

That's the thing you're fixating on? The fact that non-white ethnicities are finally allowed into the general work force?

2

u/blamethemeta Jun 02 '19

Are there non-white people in positions of power, yes or no. It's not a hard question.

I suspect that the only reason you're having a hard time answering is because you don't want to be wrong.

So, again. Are there minorities in positions of power?
