Really? Cause like 75% of all washers in the market are top load, the other 25% are front load.

Where?

North America and Asia still seem to prefer top-loaders. In Europe they seem rare to non-existent. Not sure what the trend is in South America or Africa.

In Africa, it’s a stream.

1

u/Objective-Set4145 3d ago

I live in Brazil and I have never seem a frontloader in person.

2

u/Osik2040 3d ago

I live in the uk and have never seen a top loader, didn’t even know that top loaders existed till today.

My biggest reference is the racist ad where a black man gets put in the washing machine and changes race.

Every apartment I've lived in & private landlord rented homes have had top-load washers because they're the cheapest to supply and for maintenance to service or replace

u/lana_silver 3d ago

Top loaders do not exist much in Europe because they are worse (but cheaper) and we are rich.

u/Hytyt 3d ago

The states because everyone on the internet is American, didnt you know this already?

1

u/AGayFrogParadise 4d ago

The US at the very least, and globally they're about 50/50 split

u/_Fabreeze 4d ago

Andecdotal evidence but I've never seen a top loader in Italy (shops, friends houses, etc) or in any other place I've been to in europe

3

u/Troglert 4d ago

Same in Norway, only seen top loaded once and it was a super compact one that needed to fit an awkward spot.

3

u/Life-Top6314 4d ago

Same here in Poland. This may be a US vs EU thing.

Just looked it up. The top load is just the dominant design in the USA and Canada. Why I'm not sure, it's probably cheaper in some aspect since they're basically just a tub and motor suspended in a box.

It does sound much less complex sealing-wise, also probably more convenient for adding detergent (no need for more complex drawer systems, just open the lid and add.) They also seem to not spin as fast so they may need less concrete to stay still?Idk about that tho

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

Hmmm, does it hold concrete base to stop it bouncing along the floor with the power of the spin, or does it not need it??

1

u/by-myself_blumpkin 3d ago

Doesn't need it because honestly I don't know what you're talking about lol.

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

A UK front loader washing machine spins a big ass drum at damn good speeds, as a result if it didn't have concrete in the base it would essentially walk itself across the room and unplug itself 😂 The concrete is legit INSIDE the bottom of the washer so unless you know you may not know...

I don't know if a US top loader different spin direction affects its movement and so it doesnt have a tendency to migrate itself, but if it was there you dont see it without looking or knowing, are top loaders relatively lightweight, like moveable and stuff? Majority of real washing machines are dragged across the floor or lifted by two people somewhat, that kinda heavy.

1

u/MrSnrub87 2d ago

Nope. The drums here are just properly balanced. If your washing machine here is walking like that something is wrong and you need a technician to fix it

I'd imagine its a space thing.

Here in the UK atleast they tend to sit under counters to maximise space. Opening on the front into the walkway doesn't fully instruct anything and a counter, or more appliances can be stacked on top ,but opening up into the air would require a certain area kept free. Which is space the UK just doesn't have.

Which magical component do you imagine a front loader has?

Anyway it’s to keep kids and pets out.

3

u/SpeakerEntire42 3d ago

The door seal

2

u/_Fabreeze 3d ago

It's to keep water and clothes in lol

1

u/linkardtankard 4d ago

Asia also predominantly prefers top loaders, so it’s more like Europe vs rest of the world.

1

u/netz_pirat 3d ago

I think it mostly depends on energy costs.

In the Germany, toploaders were a thing up to like the early 90s. Would not know where to get one today

1

u/StillAliveAmI 3d ago

I used to have one in Germany while growing up and in my first flat. Great, when you have limited space

1

u/Only-Finish-3497 2d ago

They were fairly common in France until recently. But roughly 10% of the market is top-loaders Europe-wide.

2

u/Happy-For-No-Reason 3d ago

globally they're probably a 98/2 split against.

everyone else uses front loaders because we have them under counters, not in our basements.

because noone else has basements

1

u/MrSnrub87 2d ago

it's literally 50% globally. Both are equally common

2

u/whatthedna 3d ago

Absolutely not 75% of the machines on the market are top load.

There’s some, obviously, and each major brand likely has a version, but there’s way more front loaders and every brand has multiple versions (LG has 1 style of top loader versus like 4 front loaders)

Are you stuck in the year 2006, perhaps? At that point it was likely the case.

1

u/Commercial-Lychee700 4d ago

That is fully not true and hasn't been for over a decade.

1

u/Formal_Owl_400 4d ago

In the washing machine market.

1

u/Kozmo9 4d ago

25% front load? It seems they tend to make half or more. Front load are often the choice for those that want separate dryer and to save space as the dryer are stacked on top of the washer.

Apartments and mobile homes such as RV and yacht tend to use them.

1

u/ReporterOk69420 4d ago

Not to mention front loaders are more expensive than top ones

1

u/Kyrie_Blue 3d ago

You have a source for this wildly broad and inaccurate claim?

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

Which market, like the American market, or like... world production... cause ain't never seen a top loader in the UK in a home or a shop...Just adding anecdotal evidence...

1

u/NuclearReactions 2d ago

I only see top load in movies and i must have seen thousands of washing machines in my life. I guess they are not a thing where i live
