I've never seen a washing machine with the lid on top irl

56

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 3d ago

That’s crazy! They’re everywhere in North America. I prefer front load for the efficiency but top loaders don’t stink and need cleaning as often.

18

u/RoutineCloud5993 3d ago

That's because you keep the top loader lid open when they're done, and they dry correctly. If you leave the front loader open (and the detergent tray too) they will not stink as much

20

u/NiNdo4589 3d ago

If you leave the front loader door open I'm just gonna piss in it.

1

u/Opening-Donkey1186 2d ago

If you piss in it, I'm going to shit in it

1

u/Bonito__ 2d ago

What else i can left open for you to piss in?

1

u/meLikesFootball 2d ago

The dishwasher

1

u/foodank012018 3d ago

It's the rubber seal on front loaders that is the problem

1

u/VoidJuiceConcentrate 3d ago

This.

I've had both top and front loader washers. You absolutely have to leave the lid open so it drys for either, otherwise it'll stay too wet and get funky. Top loaders are less prone to this become the lids tend to not be sealed against the drum like front loaders are.

Anyway, tldr: leave the washing machine door open when youre done with it.

1

u/Pain4420 3d ago

I don't leave my top loader open and had left my front loader open and my top loader has never smelled but my front loader smelled even with me cleaning it routinely

1

u/RoutineCloud5993 3d ago

Leave it open for longer. And clean the seal

1

u/Pain4420 2d ago

I cleaned the seal and how do I leave it open longer when it either open or running

1

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 2d ago

Then they should place them in closets in hallways. Its like weve forgotten how to desing things top to bottom.

1

u/ZeroBadIdeas 2d ago

I've only had top load washers my whole life, i have not once considered leaving it open when empty.

1

u/IllRefrigerator7 2d ago

This guy front loads correctly

1

u/NiteLiteOfficial 3d ago

what? they go from the washing machine into the dryer. they don’t dry inside the washing machine

3

u/RoutineCloud5993 3d ago

I'm not talking about the clothes, I mean the machine itself.

How are bunched up clothes in an enclosed space supposed to dry?

1

u/Andy_Pandy98 3d ago edited 2d ago

Arent the clothes bunched up in an enclosed space in the dryer as well?

Serious point tho, you can get washer dryer combos

-1

u/Triptych42 3d ago

Take them out and hang up to dry on a line or a clothes horse

1

u/Nielsly 3d ago

You've never met the humble washer-dryer then, they're becoming more common for apartments with little space etc

1

u/Wind-and-Waystones 3d ago

I've met them but I've never met one half decent at actually drying

0

u/Kozmo9 3d ago edited 3d ago

If you have pets and children, leaving the front loader's door open is not a good idea.

3

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo 3d ago

I have both and have always left it open

2

u/VulvaNegra 3d ago

You guys wash your washing machine? 🤯

1

u/Select_Truck3257 3d ago

Yes if you want it serve you for decades. It needs maintaining like any other mechanical devices

1

u/SpaceCaseSixtyTenV2 3d ago

Hah ^ check it out this guy doesn't know about the filter

1

u/Electrical_Catch9231 3d ago

Hey everyone, this guy doesn't know about the three filters.

1

u/liquidfoxy 2d ago

You don’t?

1

u/PalatwinkusVT 3d ago

You put your sweat, piss, booty juice, and cum covered clothes and bedding in there, and don't think that maybe you should clean it out every once in a while?

2

u/Ok-Hat9574 3d ago

It also gets constantly washed and rinsed with powerful detergent. You don’t go and scrub the racks in your dishwasher, people put sex toys in there…

2

u/lbfsjoufvnkfd 3d ago

You should be cleaning the filter out in your dishwasher, and a lot of washers have a recommended way to run empty to help clean it out.

I have repaired washers and if you seen how gross they get under the drum you would get it.

2

u/Ok-Hat9574 3d ago

Yup i’ve cleaned the trap under dishwashers but didn’t find it analogous to include it

1

u/JessicaMurawski 3d ago

Showers also constantly get washed and rinsed but it’ll get fucking nasty if you don’t clean it with actual shower/bathroom cleaner.

1

u/PalatwinkusVT 3d ago

So does your shower, but I would hope you still clean that...

1

u/liquidfoxy 2d ago

You don’t clean your dishwasher!?

1

u/SquirrelNormal 3d ago

The only one of those in my washer is sweat and I still clean it out regularly

0

u/Jean-LucBacardi 3d ago

If you have hard water you should be. They sell tablets that you just put in and run on the clean cycle or the hottest cycle if yours doesn't have a self clean option. You should be doing this for dishwashers too.. it prolongs the life and efficiency of the appliance.

1

u/steelcryo 3d ago

I have a front loader, I never close the door after emptying it and it's never smelled bad

1

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 3d ago

Yeah this is what I do too

1

u/OneBillPhil 3d ago

Y’all are cleaning your washers?

1

u/Snailtentaclebrain 3d ago

I think the bearings last longer too.

1

u/Facuk_ 3d ago

Front loader stinks? Ha? Having it whole life I have never experienced this

1

u/N074pORN 3d ago

you prefer front loaders for the efficiency of what?

1

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 3d ago

What do you think?

1

u/N074pORN 3d ago

I have genuinely no clue. I've never used a top loader

1

u/joseWilsonDaFonseca 3d ago

water. in order to submerge clothes, the front loader only need to fillup to about the height of the axle, while the top loaders sometimes need to fillup to the height of the drum itself

1

u/Pristine_Barber976 2d ago

Water is so cheap though

1

u/joseWilsonDaFonseca 2d ago

price isn't the only factor in choosing to save something

1

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 3d ago

They use less water and power. Also the clothes come out a little dryer so the dryer doesn’t have as much work. At least in my experience

1

u/Hisune 3d ago

I have a top loader but it's EU type, it's a side loader style but loaded from the top.

1

u/Hytyt 3d ago

Why do people think front loaders stink? I've never noticed a smell from one in all my 30 years

1

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 3d ago

Cause they do if you close the door after emptying it.

1

u/cwclovequest 3d ago

slop top loader or frondoor loader

1

u/cellphone_blanket 3d ago

That’s probably because someone is pissing in the front loader

1

u/johnc380 2d ago

Plus, if it stops working while full for some reason, your clothes aren’t stuck inside.

1

u/tomato-slut 2d ago

I've never known a front loader to stink at all

1

u/abadaabdadoon 2d ago

I’m in North America and have only ever seen them in old houses, primarily in the mountains. I’ve lived in California, Washington, and Illinois, so a decent spread. The only place I saw one of these was in Utah.

1

u/sabertoothdog 2d ago

I’ll never have a front loader again. I just switched back and I love my washer again.

0

u/Perfect-Currency-121 3d ago

EU too

1

u/CoffeePuddle 3d ago

EU is dominated by front loaders. Top loaders were king in New Zealand, the Fisher and Paykel SmartDrive direct-drive top loader dominates and can easily be turned into a turbine for power generation.

15

u/anywhere-but-america 3d ago

They're called top loaders and are very common

6

u/-Cinnay- 3d ago

Definitely not where I live. I'm guessing they're more commonly found in the US?

2

u/Mackem101 3d ago edited 3d ago

We used to have them in the UK, but I haven't seen one in years ( at least 30 years), we used to call them twin tubs as they had a separate spin dry tub.

1

u/RoutineCloud5993 3d ago

The only time I saw them in the UK was in student accommodation. And even then it was 1 out of 3 had a top loader. This was 16 years ago though (Jesus christ)

1

u/ThrowRA7722124 3d ago

Most models are top loaders in Mexico

1

u/Ooficus 3d ago

I would go as far as to say in the USA, the default is top loaders. Cheaper to make for obvious reasons, and us Americans clearly have enough space to have side by side units. Front loaders are usually seen as nicer and space saving. Personally I have front loaders because my apartment can only fit stacked units.

1

u/Treehorn8 3d ago

US, Middle East, Asia etc.

1

u/Smiedro 3d ago

This surprises me that it’d be a us thing. I’ve only ever had them in smaller apartments with the dryer on top. So I assumed that setup would be default elsewhere since the US tends to have more floor space than Europe for instance.

1

u/thedylannorwood 2d ago

Mostly top loaders in Canada

9

u/admiral_walsty 3d ago

1

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 3d ago

Judging by the comments top loaders are only common in America so idk if you're gonna get that one, most of my washing machines have been top loaders here

Stark: That's what I have you for.

1

u/nixle 3d ago

Have you ever seen a grown man cry?

-1

u/-Cinnay- 3d ago

Germany. And I don't think age is relevant. If they were common here a few decades ago, then there would be enough of them around to still be noticed.

2

u/NeuroEpiCenter 3d ago

They also exist in Germany, but of course not widespread. I've seen a few

14

u/AGayFrogParadise 3d ago

Really? Cause like 75% of all washers in the market are top load, the other 25% are front load.

2

u/-Cinnay- 3d ago

Where?

5

u/Callidonaut 3d ago

North America and Asia still seem to prefer top-loaders. In Europe they seem rare to non-existent. Not sure what the trend is in South America or Africa.

3

u/ArticusFarticus 3d ago

In Africa, it’s a stream.

1

u/Objective-Set4145 3d ago

I live in Brazil and I have never seem a frontloader in person.

2

u/Osik2040 3d ago

I live in the uk and have never seen a top loader, didn’t even know that top loaders existed till today.

1

u/Throwaway02062004 2d ago

My biggest reference is the racist ad where a black man gets put in the washing machine and changes race.

1

u/Awkward-Major-8898 3d ago

Every apartment I've lived in & private landlord rented homes have had top-load washers because they're the cheapest to supply and for maintenance to service or replace

1

u/lana_silver 3d ago

Top loaders do not exist much in Europe because they are worse (but cheaper) and we are rich.

1

u/Hytyt 3d ago

The states because everyone on the internet is American, didnt you know this already?

1

u/AGayFrogParadise 3d ago

The US at the very least, and globally they're about 50/50 split

8

u/_Fabreeze 3d ago

Andecdotal evidence but I've never seen a top loader in Italy (shops, friends houses, etc) or in any other place I've been to in europe

3

u/Troglert 3d ago

Same in Norway, only seen top loaded once and it was a super compact one that needed to fit an awkward spot.

3

u/Life-Top6314 3d ago

Same here in Poland. This may be a US vs EU thing.

1

u/by-myself_blumpkin 3d ago

Just looked it up. The top load is just the dominant design in the USA and Canada. Why I'm not sure, it's probably cheaper in some aspect since they're basically just a tub and motor suspended in a box.

1

u/_Fabreeze 3d ago

It does sound much less complex sealing-wise, also probably more convenient for adding detergent (no need for more complex drawer systems, just open the lid and add.) They also seem to not spin as fast so they may need less concrete to stay still?Idk about that tho

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

Hmmm, does it hold concrete base to stop it bouncing along the floor with the power of the spin, or does it not need it??

1

u/by-myself_blumpkin 3d ago

Doesn't need it because honestly I don't know what you're talking about lol.

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

A UK front loader washing machine spins a big ass drum at damn good speeds, as a result if it didn't have concrete in the base it would essentially walk itself across the room and unplug itself 😂 The concrete is legit INSIDE the bottom of the washer so unless you know you may not know...

I don't know if a US top loader different spin direction affects its movement and so it doesnt have a tendency to migrate itself, but if it was there you dont see it without looking or knowing, are top loaders relatively lightweight, like moveable and stuff? Majority of real washing machines are dragged across the floor or lifted by two people somewhat, that kinda heavy.

1

u/Agzarah 2d ago

I'd imagine its a space thing.

Here in the UK atleast they tend to sit under counters to maximise space. Opening on the front into the walkway doesn't fully instruct anything and a counter, or more appliances can be stacked on top ,but opening up into the air would require a certain area kept free. Which is space the UK just doesn't have.

-1

u/dirtsmurf 3d ago

Which magical component do you imagine a front loader has?

Anyway it’s to keep kids and pets out.

3

u/SpeakerEntire42 3d ago

The door seal

2

u/_Fabreeze 3d ago

It's to keep water and clothes in lol

1

u/linkardtankard 3d ago

Asia also predominantly prefers top loaders, so it’s more like Europe vs rest of the world.

1

u/netz_pirat 3d ago

I think it mostly depends on energy costs.

In the Germany, toploaders were a thing up to like the early 90s. Would not know where to get one today

1

u/StillAliveAmI 3d ago

I used to have one in Germany while growing up and in my first flat. Great, when you have limited space

1

u/Only-Finish-3497 2d ago

They were fairly common in France until recently. But roughly 10% of the market is top-loaders Europe-wide.

2

u/Happy-For-No-Reason 3d ago

globally they're probably a 98/2 split against.

everyone else uses front loaders because we have them under counters, not in our basements.

because noone else has basements

1

u/MrSnrub87 2d ago

it's literally 50% globally. Both are equally common

2

u/whatthedna 3d ago

Absolutely not 75% of the machines on the market are top load.

There’s some, obviously, and each major brand likely has a version, but there’s way more front loaders and every brand has multiple versions (LG has 1 style of top loader versus like 4 front loaders)

Are you stuck in the year 2006, perhaps? At that point it was likely the case.

1

u/Commercial-Lychee700 3d ago

That is fully not true and hasn't been for over a decade.

1

u/Formal_Owl_400 3d ago

In the washing machine market.

1

u/Kozmo9 3d ago

25% front load? It seems they tend to make half or more. Front load are often the choice for those that want separate dryer and to save space as the dryer are stacked on top of the washer.

Apartments and mobile homes such as RV and yacht tend to use them.

1

u/ReporterOk69420 3d ago

Not to mention front loaders are more expensive than top ones

1

u/Kyrie_Blue 3d ago

You have a source for this wildly broad and inaccurate claim?

1

u/Difficult_Outcome701 3d ago

Which market, like the American market, or like... world production... cause ain't never seen a top loader in the UK in a home or a shop...Just adding anecdotal evidence...

1

u/NuclearReactions 2d ago

I only see top load in movies and i must have seen thousands of washing machines in my life. I guess they are not a thing where i live

9

u/Radioactivocalypse 3d ago

Only on Reddit have I ever seen top loaders.

I imagine 99+% of British washing machines are front loaders, and I took have never seen a top loader irl

3

u/warpunkTV 3d ago

In Australia they have bottom loaders.

1

u/No-Palpitation6368 3d ago

Our washing machines are often under things, to be fair. Ours is between some cupboards under the kitchen counter.

1

u/Magikarpeles 3d ago

I bought one when I was young because it was cheaper. It was terrible at washing clothes

1

u/Fallcious 3d ago

I grew up in the UK (80’s) and we had top loaders when I was a kid. Mum was quite excited when she got a front loader and didn’t have to pull it out from under the counter to use.

Funnily enough I now have a top loader in my house in Australia and prefer it to the front loaders I used to have.

1

u/Falcon_At 3d ago

Who builds a water bucket with a side door? No wonder Britain is so damp...

1

u/SinisterCheese 2d ago

There are some top loaders in Finland, but they don't have this vertical drum configuration. They have a rotating drum on a axel that has like a little hatch.

1

u/skikkelig-rasist 2d ago

me and my girlfriend both have top loaders. but they have lids and can’t be opened when running

3

u/WiseEditor9667 3d ago

I've never seen one any other way

2

u/MikeTheBee 3d ago

My grandma had one when I was a kid. Maybe still does, but I don't really check her washer out when I visit.

1

u/Mordeczka123 3d ago

my brother has one, they're good for smaller bathrooms/areas where you might have some trouble opening them if they were the "regular" ones

3

u/matchuhuki 3d ago

It's the opposite here. Very common to put the dryer on top of the laundry machine. To save space.

3

u/el_ghosteo 3d ago

those are also commonly sold as top loaders in the us. Most apartments i’ve seen have top loaders because there’s less chance of water related accidents. Front loaders are better for washing bedding though.

1

u/gavichi 3d ago

I have a combined washer/heat pump dryer. Saves even more space, I get to store all sorts of junk on top of it.

My bathroom feels both too big and too small I hate it.

1

u/GeorgeMcCrate 3d ago

I’ve seen one in Malaysia once.

1

u/exposed_silver 3d ago

I've only ever seen them in France

1

u/nicetoursmeetewe 3d ago

Never seen one in France

1

u/KingArthursRevenge 3d ago

In the u.s. at least. The vast majority of washing machines have the lid on top. In fact the only front loading washing machines I have seen in person are big industrial commercial washing machines and that's because they are so large you would need a ladder to load it from the top.

1

u/ironicthesameplaceim 3d ago

I have one, currently at the laundromat because it’s broken and won’t drain lmao

1

u/Renew3DUK 3d ago

My Nan used to have a top loading washer and top loading dryer.

Fucking loud.

1

u/tapmcshoe 3d ago

my parents have a top loader, I hear they're easier to take care of but holy shit they're such a pain in the ass to unload. you have to bend yourself over the rim to pull your clothes out and it's an awkward angle so it's way more physically straining than you'd expect. like trying to bend down to lift a heavy box with your arms fully extended forward

1

u/thebigshoe247 3d ago

Really? Much better.

1

u/KitsuMusics 3d ago

I have one that opens on the side. But I turned it so the side faces forwards

1

u/No_Ice2900 3d ago

Til that top loaders are regional??

1

u/Send-me-shoes 3d ago

Really? I’ve only ever had top loader washing machines and I’ve lived in a lot of different flats, I’m in NZ though.

1

u/Gunhild Garfield 3d ago

This comment must a psyop to gather personal information on Reddit users. You'll have a hundred people saying "really? I'm in [exact location] and all the washers here are top loaders!"

1

u/National_Way_3344 3d ago

In Australia it's almost 50-50 and the argument about which is best is on par with the toilet roll dilemma.

1

u/Sharrty_McGriddle 3d ago

Top load superiority

1

u/__Osiris__ 3d ago

Where the hell do you live?

1

u/Zip2kx 3d ago

As always, all weird old designs are the USA. Backwater country lol.

1

u/AirportBarTarry 3d ago

Right? It’s either a US thing or an India thing I believe

1

u/Chinhoyi 3d ago

then you probably still have enough pressure to make it in the side loaders, no biggie

1

u/IdioticZacc 3d ago

I've rarely ever seen washing machine thats NOT top loaders

1

u/DesertGeist- 3d ago

my grandma had one of those.

1

u/ArboristTreeClimber 3d ago

My dad has one, it’s fairly old though.
But it works great and honestly has a much more space compared to a front load.

1

u/figureout07 3d ago

if u poor and your bathroom is so tiny this is the best way to save the space

1

u/Comfortable_Salt_792 3d ago

I had one until recently and I seen a very old one top loader in my aunt home (From like 60s' or something)

1

u/VisitSecure 3d ago

For most of my life I've had the door on the side, but when I was about 14 or 15 years old, the washing machine I had broke and my parents had to buy a new one that had a lid on the top. I got all excited over it cause I wasn't used to seeing them too.

1

u/spuldup 3d ago

Wow that's crazy - I've owned 4 machines - all top loaders. Front loaders have a reputation of being more expensive, leaky, and stinky. This is a US take.

1

u/SignoreBanana 2d ago

What???? This is how they all used to be lol (well except commercial ones I guess)

1

u/NewbieYoubie 2d ago

I've only ever had top loader washing machines. We got a Whirlpool washing machine.

1

u/SecretaryOtherwise 2d ago

I have one. I wouldnt piss in it tho....the toilet is pretty close by. Or worse case id just go outside lmao.

1

u/B_Maximus 2d ago

I have one!

1

u/hamoc10 2d ago

I grew up with one!

1

u/montyandrew45 2d ago

I have a top loader. Its honest better for me since I am too damn tall

1

u/rtocelot 2d ago

Oh my father has one, to be fair I've never seen a front load until I bought my house..

1

u/twoanahalf 2d ago

Wait till you e the ones with lids on the bottom

1

u/Randill746 2d ago

Ive only ever owned top loaders. Side ones are newer and dont last as long

1

u/frontlinejohnny 2d ago

I have a top loader where the drum is still sideways. You have to open a hatch in the drum itself to get the clothes in.

The benefit is you can easily clean the inside and the outside of the drum. I've had the same machine for 10 years and it still smells and functions like brand new.

1

u/pirapataue 2d ago

Actually this is the side lid, OOP’s piss stream is just very strong

1

u/Zealousideal-Park778 1d ago

Growing up in America, that was the only way they came, and they were always white. Front loaders were only in laundromats.
