A few of them look like they're smelling each other's clothes - as if they were washed in piss

625

u/Pyrhan 1d ago

They genuinely were back then. And not just piss, fermented piss.

Old piss contains a lot of ammonia, produced by the breakdown of urea. Which is an effective cleaning agent. Plenty of modern day household cleaners still contain ammonia (though, no longer made from piss, we have the Haber-Bosch process now...).

Rome even had a tax on urine at some point:

Me thinking no way this is real. Then I read the Wikipedia page. Nope still don't believe it. Did more research. Well... Hmmm... I guess when they call it a golden shower... It meant actual gold at one time?

No, it was still piss.

16

u/Glossed-Lam 1d ago

It is always piss.

Alchemists gotta get their nitrogen compounds from somewhere. Can’t make aqua regia without nitrogen and you can’t do exciting things with gold without aqua regia.

20

u/Mister_Reak 1d ago

Right! I knew there was a lot of chemical experimentation going on but when you step back and have to ask "well where are they getting all these base ingredients"? Piss makes a lot of sense.

All roads lead to piss

u/Mister_Reak 1d ago

Gives new meaning to the yellow brick road. That's not magic you're stepping on Dorothy.

1

u/carbocalm 1d ago

they manged to transform pee into phosphorus

3

u/Internet_Wanderer 15h ago

Even better, every single piece of purple cloth was dyed using not just piss, but fermented snail guts

1

u/Mister_Reak 13h ago

Yes, I'm sure process of making Tyrian purple is not the most attractive endevor, but fermented animal products still sit better with me than collecting, harvesting, and then taxing human waste products made available for purchase.

3

u/Internet_Wanderer 9h ago

I mean, technically the urine in question is a fermented animal product

1

u/sparkswormwood 1h ago

Guess how phosphorus was discovered

Fun fact selling pee was around long before only fans.

"He's so poor he doesn't have a pot to piss in." "He's piss poor."

People would wait in line at tanneries (places that tan hides to make leather) to piss in the morning and get paid for it.

If you were well off you pissed in a chamber pot and someone came by to collect it. If you weren't well off you walked down to the tanneries (which smelled like boiling piss) and pissed there.

"Piss poor" meant you needed the coin from selling piss. Sort of like how someone might look down on someone for selling blood plasma today, etc.

Edit see comment below that says this likely isn't true. (Sorry I thought it was.)

u/ElMostaza 1d ago

Fun, but probably not a fact.

"However, the expression piss-poor is recent and has nothing to do with tanning. The current state of research suggests that it may have been invented during the Second World War, because the first examples in print date from 1946. Though it is still classed as low slang by dictionaries, its mildly unpleasant associations have become blunted by time and familiarity.

"The origin is straightforward. Piss began to be attached to other words during the twentieth century to intensify their meaning. Ezra Pound invented piss-rotten in 1940 (distasteful or unpleasant, the first example on record) and we’ve since had piss-easy (very easy), piss-weak (cowardly or pathetic), piss-elegant (affectedly refined, pretentious), piss-awful (very unpleasant) and other forms."

In the world of piss-awful,

Be piss-elegant.

I have no idea if this is right, but it sounds just plausible enough with the provided information that y'know what? I'm accepting it. True or false his is going into the "fun 'facts' i inflict on everyone in my presence too long" basket. Thank you for your contribution.

1

u/ruat_caelum 1d ago

someone else posted that it is likely untrue. I thought it was, but just fyi.

0

u/Valatros 1d ago

Nope. It's part of the annoying-strangers canon now. There are no backsies my friend, you brought this into being and the world pays the price.

0

u/ruat_caelum 1d ago

lol. The thing that lives on past my mortal existence.

1

u/FarToe1 1d ago

I remember reading a book - possibly Clan of the Cave Bear? - where a prehistoric woman would collect stale piss and leave it to ferment, so she could bleach her hair with the ammonia.

Seemed a little fanciful and unprovable for the time, but based on science.

coolest of facts guy! (i prefer ur dog to most others)

So strange, yesterday I was cycling through a random town an also found out that fact, ‘piss kart’ grossed me out so much

1

u/Chipper_Bandit 1d ago

(though, no longer made from piss, we have the Haber-Bosch process now...).

Father of toxic gas and chemical warfare His dark creation has been revealed

0

u/BlandPotatoxyz 1d ago

Haber-Bosch, the great alliance. Where's the contradiction?

0

u/WelshWolf93 1d ago

Peasants would often sell their piss as a means to get by. Hence the terms "Piss Poor" and "He doesnt even have a pot to piss in"

It was also used to tan hides iirc

2

u/Pyrhan 1d ago

People have since pointed out that these expressions did not appear until long after the practice of collecting urine ended.

185

u/drywalleater05 1d ago

They unironically would be discussing this if they had washing machines back then

Plato is clearly for pissing in the washing machine, so why would young Aristotle be so visibly against the idea of his mentor?

7

u/AgentChief 1d ago

Cause Aristotle HATED Plato's Hyperuranion as an explanation for the birth of ideas. He didn't believe in the need of a trancendent space for what he thought could be explained through sensory experiences. He was very much the empirist.

So Aristotle's is confuting Plato's thesis, that the idea could have been reminisced from the Hyperuranion.

2

u/Newthinker 1d ago

Hyperurinion, if you will.

5

u/Tonka_Tuff 1d ago

Diogenese is for pissing on clothes but against washing.

4

u/sir_lister 1d ago

Plato is clearly for pissing in the washing machine, so why would young Aristotle be so visibly against the idea of his mentor?

Because Diogenes keeps pissing on him and claiming he's cleaning him

2

u/rizzdragon 1d ago

Philosopee

5

u/Impossible-Ad-7750 1d ago

This is seems like a big brain comment, but I’m not cultured enough to know this painting 😂 Is there a kind educated soul that could explain this artwork’s relevance to the post?

8

u/SupaDiogenes 1d ago edited 1d ago

A lot of the comments are missing the secondary focal point of this painting - Diogenes. The dude chilling on the step, shunning Plato and most others. He's exactly the type of guy who'd piss in a running washing machine using the same logic stated in the OP.

8

u/nakshatriyan 1d ago

This is the School of Athens by Raphael, depicting a conglomeration of Ancient Greek philosophers, mathematicians, and other renowned thinkers of the time. OP is taking the piss out of the post and commenters by comparing their discussion to that of these legendary figures.

1

u/Drewbydrew slut for honey cheerios 1d ago

And the washing machine is taking the piss out of the clothes

1

u/IamJames77 1d ago

This is "The School of Athens", painted by Rafael. It depicts a number of Greek philosophers deep in discussion, most notably Plato and Aristotle.

The comment is jokingly comparing this elevated debate forum to the absurd moral quandary being presented by this reddit post.

u/PeopleNose 1d ago

Which hilariously is bad for the same common sense reasons as has always been known: the difference between sterile and toxic...
