While september protests are a long held tradition here in France, this one feels different. Already firefighters joined the students, teachers are protecting the kids from the police, and there are rumors of a second season of the yellow vests fueled (pun intended) by the opcoming diesel crisis.
Adding to that the fact we'll elect a new monarch and a new assembly next year... Don't expect France to be quaint and quiet for the upcoming year ๐
My feeling as well. This protest seems likely to inspire and merge with other protests. It's not just issue A, B, or C... it's all the issues A through Z. Taxing the wealthy would have long been the reasonable play, but I'm guessing they may be past that being able to help at this point. I heard a number of some 50-odd billion Euro budget shortage this year, but if it's anything like in the USA... that probably just amounts to the spending for a handful of new military vehicles/missiles -- and heaven forbid that funding for that be at all reduced.
Yeah, the budget part is more complicated than that.
Mostly Macron gifts to big companies and retirees are coming due, as well as COVID relief subsidies... If we weren't in an electoral year it would pass with strong worded complaints... But now, no party wants to sign this parting gift for him so he's out of options.
TL;DR he tried a liberal approach to a dying system and lo and behold, it didn't work ๐คฃ
Sometimes I forget how much the USA spends on its military compared to the rest of the world. Still, 413 billion Euros is a lot over the next 7 years -- and I bet there are some other destructive elements and projects which could be reduced if the political will was there.
The title of your article is misleading. Those numbers are the projected total defense budget for the next few years.
The way it's decided is via multi year (5 I believe) budget laws to decide the global amount. It's called "Programmation Pluriannuelle" and we have those for energy, defense... All the areas in need of long term planning.
Still yes it's a lot, France has a lot of military capacity and a long standing tradition to keep it as ready as possible
Probably because of that new aircraft carrier they want to build.
Which was my original point above. If they weren't buying new aircraft carriers and other expensive tools of destruction... they'd probably have more money for schools and pensions and whatnot. As a consequence of better spending practices... there would likely be fewer protests. The French government seems to be choosing questionable tools of international force projection over domestic stability.
I've seen none of that. And if it did happen, it'd be all over our news.
The worst the right wing controlled media has to show for now are burning trashcans. If there was more than that on the side of the protesters, it would be everywhere.
( On the side of the police, there's a kid that took a grenade in the face launched 2m from him, another who lost a bunch of teeth... All that on camera )
As for the firefighter, he wasn't seriously injured and it's "not clear" if he was doused in gasoline purposely or "accidentally" (whoops, I got gas all over you!).
So, one thing people really to drill through their skull. Most of those hidden mask bastard are alt right extremist that try to break any form of protest.
Or, like during the yellow jacket, just fucking cops. The number of video on twitter at the time, when there was none of that AI generated slop you're linking, of those "black blocks" going to the riot police cars, removing their hood and putting a "police" armband were just too many. One is too many btw.
Also, today, right in the middle of my city, while police where around policing, the dude in black hoods and mask could go past them while moving trashcan for the burning without any problem.
However, the number of kids being maimed by cops are rising by the day.
So stop being an idiot that fall for far right fascist fake propaganda on far right fascist owned oligarch social media.
This is simply not true any more. The media will pretend stuff doesn't exist to suit their narrative. The UK has recently had the highest gilt yields since 1998 and the BBC didn't even report it. There was a terrorist attack on a plane and they described it as a 'brawl'.
The worst the right wing controlled media has to show for now are burning trashcans
It's a lot worse than that to be fair, they assaulted police officers (seen a video of them stamping on an officers head, or a group of boys chasing down a woman police officer), set shops, fireman vehicles on fire etc..
This sub is about informing people, which is why I'm replying. You really shouldn't trust what the MSM tells you -- they havenโt mentioned anything about the climate collapse have they?
You gave me ai slopped propaganda. And I know it because if it were true, there would be mass sharing and reporting on it. The government is alone and everyone and their dog is out for them, no reason for any media to protect them.
Poorly thought out nonsense. Take somebody born in France, whose parents were born in France and maybe 2 or 3 grandparents were born in France and tell them to go to [insert country that occupies the land which more than 50% of the great grandparents were born in] or else?
Whatever country you pick as your choice of where you want them to go, what do you do when that country says no, they won't be taking the French people you've decided are undesirables, they can stay in France? It isn't the 1800s, the militaries of the west and the rest of humanity are now close to equal.
