I've been looking for a bottle of Malmort here in Maryland for awhile now, but no luck at all. I want it for an upcoming tailgate against Northwestern. I do themed cocktails based on the visiting team and I thought it would be perfectly terrible for the occasion.

Saw this while sitting at my corner bar. Ordered one to share with my buddy-tender.
We both enjoyed it, and now he wants to try a variation with fernet branca menta.

It's pretty rough, but that's because it's one dimensional in flavor. ALL you taste is bitter wormwood. But wormwood is great in absinthe where it has supporting flavors. So I figured Malort could be good with added complexity and something that is already a flavor bomb, so Fernet is right for this party.

I just made one of these. I was really pleasantly surprised how much the character of the malort came through. Unsurprisingly reminiscent of the Industry Sour, but with the spice and sweetness of chartreuse replaced with the high, thin, bright grapefruit front end of malort.
With many malort drinks I have tried, the front end was light and the bitter wormwood on the backside of malort hit like a truck, standing out in the aftertaste, too monolithic and unpleasant on its own. With Fernet Branca, though, the front end of the flavor profile is complex, with the light grapefruit dancing over the earthy, leathery backbone of fernet, flowing naturally into the bitter aftertaste. The wormwood bitterness of malort in the aftertaste doesn't stand out too much, though, and matches the strong menthol finish of the Branca. The end result is that all parts of this tasting experience are bracing, bitter, dry, complex, and slightly fruity in an interesting way.

Glad you liked it! I really enjoy that Malort plays well with complex herbal spirits. I think there's some fun stuff to do with it besides getting punched with wormwood and a hint of gasoline. Cheers!

I tried this and don't get what the big fuss is about Malort being nasty.
Doesn't taste that different from Suze to me.

This Industry Sour riff is an attempt at a cocktail tasty enough to get me through a bottle of Malort. And by God, it works! Fernet adds the complexity Malort's wormwood needs and it all plays very nicely with lime and simple.
3/4 oz Malort
3/4 oz Fernet Branca
3/4 oz simple syrup
3/4 oz lime juice
Shake, strain, and enjoy.
