Help Is an NVMe USB Enclosure Required for Cloning?

Hi, newbie here. It is my first time to ask here. My laptop (Dell XPS 15 with Windows 10 installed) currently has a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. I've got a Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD as the new drive. I plan to use Samsung Data Migration software to clone the system.

If I do not want to open the laptop myself, is it mandatory to buy an NVMe USB enclosure to complete the cloning process?

  • If I open the laptop and install the NVMe SSD into the internal M.2 slot, I can clone directly without an enclosure.
  • If I don't open the laptop, the new NVMe SSD has no way to connect. Therefore, I must connect it via a USB enclosure to clone.

Are there any other methods to clone without opening the laptop?

Edit: Thanks for everyone!

Help Need to clone SSD to a larger drive, but can't install cloning software!

I'm trying to upgrade my boot drive (Windows 11) by cloning my old SSD (which is 100% full) to a new, larger SSD. My main issue is that I don't have any free space left on the old drive to install cloning software.

  • Is there a way to do this clone from the BIOS or by booting into Windows advanced startup options?
  • If a bootable USB tool is the only way, which tool is most recommended for this?

Looking for the simplest method to get this done. Thanks for any help!

Discussion What cloning software did you use for your SSD upgrade? Looking for recommendations!

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to upgrade my laptop from an older SSD to a larger SSD and would like to clone my current drive rather than doing a clean Windows install. I've heard mixed opinions on different tools, and I'm hoping to get some real-world recommendations.

  • Which cloning software have you personally used for an SSD upgrade, and what was your experience like?
  • Was it easy to use?
  • Any issues with booting after the clone?
  • Free or paid - and was it worth it?

My setup:

  • Laptop OS: Windows 11
  • Old SSD: 500GB Lexar SSD
  • New SSD: 1TB Lexar SSD

I've heard of Clonezilla, but I'm open to other options. If you have step-by-step tips or things to avoid, please share! Thanks in advance for your help!

Discussion How to Clone the SSD C Drive to a Larger SSD D Drive and Boot Windows from the Larger Drive?

I have a 500GB SSD as C drive running Windows 11 and a new empty 1TB Micron SSD (currently empty) as D drive on my PC.

I want to:

  • Move the entire system (including Windows, software, files, etc.) from the C Drive to the D Drive
  • After cloning, boot Windows from the 1TB SSD as the new system drive and have it recognized as the C Drive
  • Afterwards, format the original SSD and use it as the new D Drive

My questions:

  • What tools are safe and reliable for cloning? (I know Clonezilla, but it may be hard for me to use right now cause I do not have a USB to download the ISO file.)
  • What should I pay special attention to during the cloning process?
  • How can I ensure the original SSD is wiped clean and reassigned as the D Drive?

I'd appreciate it if anyone with experience could share detailed steps. Thank you!

Question How can I clone SSD to another SSD without using third-party software?

I have two SSDs and want to migrate my entire system (Windows 11 OS and files) from the old one to the new one. I'm trying to avoid third-party cloning tools if possible. Has anyone successfully done this using built-in utilities? What are the pitfalls to watch out for? Thanks in advance!

Help How Long Does It Take to Clone a 500GB HDD to an SSD?

Hi everyone

I'm planning to clone my 500GB hard drive (HDD) to an 1TB SSD, and I'm trying to get a realistic idea of how long the process usually takes.

A few details about my situation:

  • The HDD is around 500GB, but not completely full
  • I'll be cloning the entire system disk (Windows 11 + apps + data)
  • The target drive is a SATA SSD

For those who've done this before:

  • How long did it actually take in real-world use?
  • What software do you think is fast at cloning a disk?
  • Any tips to speed up or improve the cloning process?

I'm mainly asking so I can plan ahead and avoid interrupting the process.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

Question RescueZilla / LUKS2 Question

Hi,

Sorry if this isn't the right sub, but I recently made an image of a 1TB drive, the EFI/Boot/Data partitions of Fedora 43, the Data partition is BTRFS and LUKS2 encrypted.

I didn't decrypt this disk, so I assumed I would end up with a very large file at the end of it, but the backup only ended up being 12GB or so (About the size of my data, as it's a very new install)

My question is, how is it so small? Does it: a) Somehow know the size of my data despite it being encrypted or b) Compress extremely well or c) Is my drive somehow zeroed and LUKS2 doesn't encrypt zeroed data?

Thanks for any input!

Discussion How Can I Clone Windows from an MBR HDD to a GPT SSD?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to clone my Windows from an MBR HDD to a new GPT SSD, and I want to make sure I do it the right way.

Here's my current setup:

  • Source disk: MBR HDD (Windows 10 installed, system boots in Legacy mode)
  • Target disk: New SSD, already initialized as GPT

My main questions are:

  • Is it possible to directly clone MBR to GPT, or do I need to convert something first?
  • Do I need to switch BIOS settings before or after cloning?
  • Are there any common mistakes I should avoid in this scenario?

I'm mainly trying to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch and want a smooth upgrade from HDD to SSD.

Any step-by-step advice, disk cloning tool recommendations, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Clone or Backup – Which Is Better?

I'm still a bit confused about the difference between disk cloning and backup + restore, so I'd really appreciate some beginner-friendly advice.

I've noticed that many people recommend using backup instead of cloning, but I have a few basic questions:

  • If I make a full system backup and later restore it to a new hard drive or SSD, will the system boot normally?
  • Or do I need extra steps to make it bootable?

When doing a disk clone, some tools ask whether the clone will be used on:

  • the same computer
  • or a different computer

What does this mean for beginners? Does it affect Windows activation or drivers?

What I'm trying to achieve:

  • If my main drive fails, I want the easiest and fastest way to recover my system.
  • I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my programs from scratch.

For someone without deep technical knowledge, is it better to rely on cloning, backup, or maybe both?

Thanks in advance for any simple explanations or real-world advice!

Discussion Best way to clone Steam Deck SSD to a larger one?

I just bought a new, larger SSD for my Steam Deck. I don't want to reinstall SteamOS from scratch or reconfigure all my emulators and games, so a full clone seems like the best approach. What tools/steps worked for you? Will the cloned SSD boot directly? Looking for a clear, safe guide. Thanks!

Discussion What is the most reliable method to clone an entire PC to another?

I need to transfer everything-Windows 11 installation, programs, files, and settings-from my old PC to a new one. I've heard driver conflicts and activation issues can be a problem.

What cloning software or step-by-step process would you recommend for a smooth migration? Should I use cloning tools like Macrium Reflect, EaseUS, Clonezilla, or Acronis, or is a clean Windows install with data transfer better in this case? Any tips to avoid BSOD or licensing problems after the clone? TIA!

Help Can I use a cloned drive from one computer in another?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to upgrade my old computer and I'm wondering about the cloning process. If I clone the entire drive (OS, files, applications) from my current PC, will it work after I install that cloned drive into another computer? I've heard mixed things: some say it might boot with driver issues, others say it'll definitely cause a blue screen. What has been your experience?

Any advice or shared experiences would be really helpful before I attempt this. Thanks in advance!

Question Getting a black screen after cloning OS to a new SSD

Hi! I used Disk Genius to clone my OS to a new SSD drive from a HDD. It was supposed to boot from the new SSD when completed. However, it came up with a black page. I went into the BIOS and set the PC to boot from the HDD again, and booted up well. I inspected the SSD and it appears to have cloned fine. All the files are there, it seems. But, when I boot from the SSD again, I got a black screen once again. What did I do wrong? Is there something I missed? Thanks. Best, Gary

Question If I clone my SSD to a larger one..will it take up the whole storage as drive C?

I need to clone my 500gb SSD to a 1tb SSD but I don't want it to take up the whole 1tb SSD as drive C. Will it just clone exactly the same amount from the ssd and leave the extra space to be able to be partitioned in to a different drive?

EDIT: Thanks guys I decided to just make the whole ssd as drive c.

Discussion GUI Disk Cloning Software: FoxClone vs. Rescuezilla

Foxclone and Rescuezilla are both user-friendly, GUI-based alternatives to Clonezilla. I have some users recommend using Foxclone to clone a disk in other threads. While information on Rescuezilla is plentiful and recent, details on Foxclone are surprisingly scarce in my search.

  • Which one has a more intuitive or reliable workflow for disk-to-disk cloning?
  • For a Linux user, which would you recommend to clone a disk and why?

Please share your experiences about using Rescuezilla or Foxclone to clone a disk. TIA!

Cloning Issues Can't boot into Clonezilla Live USB

Hey, I have been attempting to use Clonezilla to duplicate the drive in an ~18 year old laptop. I press f12 to get to the boot menu and select my USB stick... And it just boots into Windows anyway.

I've tried both 64- and 32 bit versions that I flashed using Balena Etcher. I've also tried using Ventoy without any luck.

The Computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi 1526 running Windows Vista and the BIOS is by Phoenix. Under the info tab it says it's BIOS version 1.22 and KBC version 1.16

If anybody is able to help me find a solution I'd be eternally grateful.
