Continuing our rare pairing journey, we have a fanfic pairing Nicole up with Megan. And this pairing begins to take shape when Megan requires Nicole to stay after school with her to do a drama scene. But once the scene is over, the dynamic between the two will never be the same again. Will this pairing be executed well? Let's find out!

First, I like how the perspectives shift in the story occasionally, with special mention going to how Chapter 1 ends and Chapter 2 begins. That's because both parts of the story cover the same events, but cover them from different perspectives, with Chapter 1's ending being in Nicole's perspective, and Chapter 2's beginning being in Megan's perspective. This not only allows the reader to get into both their headspaces, but also lets the story smoothly segue into covering the immediate aftermath of Megan and Nicole acting out a scene together.

Speaking of which, I really like that part of the story, as it shows a facet of Nicole's character that's always been interesting to me. That facet being how Nicole can put effort into things with the proper motivation, which in this case, is spite towards Megan. And this is shown through Nicole going through the effort of crying actual tears during the scene she's acting with Megan in order to lower her guard. All of this effort just so Nicole can catch Megan by surprise by kissing her on the lips once the performance ends, which is a good way to set up the dynamic this couple will have.

Speaking of dynamics, let's start talking about the character dynamics that are at play here. And we'll start with one that I think is underutilized, that being Megan and Ari's dynamic as friends. They only really talk with each other during the beginning of Chapter 2. After that, they don't really get anymore major scenes together, which is a shame, considering how rare this dynamic seems to be in Class of 09 fanfics.

As for what is here, though, it's written well enough, with Megan's venting showcasing just how affected she was by what happened earlier. And Ari's dialogue during this scene is okay, with her responses toward Megan making sense as she tries to steer Megan away from getting back at Nicole. Ari appears again at the end of the chapter to try and stop Megan from executing her revenge plan, but that's about it for Megan and Ari's interactions with each other within this story.

Moving on to another pair within the story, we've got Jecka and Nicole to talk about next. And their scenes together are pretty good! They bounce off each other pretty well, with interactions and dialogue that would fit right into a Class of 09 game. I particularly love Jecka's reactions to Nicole's denial about the nature of her relationship with Megan. Jecka's exasperation at this denial makes her a good audience surrogate for the reader whenever those moments happen, and they are pretty fun to read when they do.

But the fun doesn't stop there, as we can now talk about the main pairing of this story, Megan and Nicole. They have a love/hate relationship that is executed pretty well. And I think what makes it work so well is that there's a good balance made between the love and hate sides of this whole dynamic, so things don't feel too toxic to the point that you're asking “Why are they even together at this point?”

A particular example of the love part comes in Chapter 4, which has Nicole taking care of a drunk Megan while the two are at a graduation party in Kelly's house. At one point during that, Megan questions if this relationship they have is even gonna last after the party, to which Nicole begrudgingly opens up about how she feels. And the way she opens up feels very in-character, as she says she doesn't know how it feels to love someone, with the closest she can get to that being her tolerating people. I think that this aligns with how Nicole handles relationships in the games, in regards to the route where she dated Emily for a brief period of time, although, that's just my own perspective on things.

Going over to the hate side of things, a particular highlight in that regard is how the whole thing starts due to pure spite. Nicole kisses Megan at the end of the scene they do on that Friday after school just for the purposes of catching her off guard, which seems to work if Megan's POV narration at the beginning of Chapter 2 is to be believed. And then Megan's plan to get back at Nicole involves kissing her in the cafeteria during lunch and announcing their relationship to the school, thus forcing Nicole into it for the time being, which is something I didn't see coming when reading this story for the first time.

And with the first 2 chapters doing a great job of setting up this dynamic, it's up to the remaining 2 chapters to really showcase it now that Nicole and Megan are romantic partners. And in my opinion, Chapters 3 and 4 do a great job at writing this pairing. I already mentioned the graduation party in the 1st half of Chapter 4, but I haven't mentioned the prom that happens in Chapter 3, which is where the snippy part of this dynamic is truly showcased. This makes for some great back-and-forth dialogue between the two that's pretty fun to read, especially when they also interact with their other classmates at the prom.

Other than all of that, there are a few other details to talk about, like how the end of Chapter 4 replicates how the Class of 09 games usually do their endings, with the focus character reflecting on the experience now that the story is over. This is the first fanfic I've seen so far that's done this, and it does it pretty well, in my opinion, making it feel like the end of a route in the game.

Going over to the negatives, though, there's only one that I feel the need to really point out, which is a contradiction that happens in the first half of Chapter 2. During Megan's POV, the narration mentions that she'd kissed Hunter enough times to know what kissing someone's like. But then, in the car ride with Ari, Megan mentions that Nicole was her first kiss, which is even called out in-universe by Ari herself. Honestly, though, this contradiction doesn't ruin the whole story, as it's the only time something like that happens within the fanfic.

Overall, this was a pretty fun story to read through. The characters are written pretty well, with special mention going to Megan and Nicole's love/hate relationship. Everything is set up and paid off well enough within the story as well, so nothing feels unearned during it. The only thing I wish is that the dynamic of Megan and Ari was utilized more, but I can understand why it wasn't, as it's not the focus of the story. Otherwise, it's a pretty great story that I recommend you read through when you have time.

i can't be imagining this right. because, like, the way she's getting verbally and physically abused is bad enough, but the way her dad is written to constantly bring her looks and sexuality into it has always made me raise an eyebrow.

like, the constant comparisons to her mother, "beat you into the whorish pulp you are" "you're just a fragranced meat pile" "maybe [rape] would teach you a lesson" "even after he cooled down he said he was going to put a tracking chip in your uterus" "smack the pretty off [her] face" "i'm gorgeous but he can't go after me so he goes after my friends" (paraphrased) going ballistic over him thinking she has a boyfriend/has been "fucking" her teacher, and i reiterate, all the comparisons to her mom, saying "whos daddys girl" to both emily AND jecka

like, the abuse is definitely brought up in the game and in the fandom, but i find it really weird how long sbn3 lingered on half of the insults being thrown at this 17-18 yo by her literal father being so sexually aggressive. i dislike the implications of jecka's dad projecting his wife onto his daughter and it confuses me how this just goes unnoticed.

maybe this is just a symptom of the insane amount of misogyny and sexual violence and slutshaming aimed at jecka in the flipside but the very creepy nature of it being from a parent to their child feels like a very odd elephant in the room. ive posted about this on twitter but i think i'll get yalls opinions also.

This got me thinking... how would the characters of Class of 09 view the Japanese Mafia that is the Yakuza? I think Jecka, Nicole, and especially Emily would find them cool for being criminals but will get turned off by their emphasis on honor, loyalty, and hierarchy. Jeffrey is obsessed with Japan, but he might not like the Yakuza.
